6/6 Rosemary (AMPS 380 / +3 343 / +6 349 / +9 425 / PMPS 369) First post with numbers for Rosemary!

I posted last week for advice on how to transition my new foster, Rosemary, onto a low carb diet when she's already been on kibble + (not always very consistent) insulin for a while. I'm pleased and surprised that testing her is going much better than expected. I think the combination of a consistent insulin schedule and quiet space is making her feel better and it's gotten easier to test her in the few days I've had her.

I started offering her Fancy Feast pate in addition to her kibble two nights ago (after 3 days on kibble only to get a baseline) and again, pleased and surprised...it's going pretty smoothly. She eats the pate when I offer it to her and is eating less of the kibble as a result. Her BGs are dropping from a lot of 400s to more 300s since I started introducing the wet so I'm hoping we keep a gradual drop as I offer her more and more LC wet.

For her weight, I want to eventually offer her 3.5 to 4 of the small cans a day. My loose plan (pending BG results):
  1. 1/2 can wet at each shot time for 4 cycles (already did this)
  2. 1 can wet at each shot time for 4-6 cycles (started this tonight)
  3. 1 can @ shot + 1/2 can snack a few hours later for 4-6 cycles
  4. Eventually getting to the same schedule I have my other sugarcat Pete on which is 1 can @ shot, 1/2 can snacks at +3 and +6 (or maybe +2 and +4 if she responds better to that)
(During all this, she'll have access to decreasing amounts of free-fed kibble that I'll take away completely when I get to full wet food amounts being offered)

Just want to confirm...I hope this question makes sense... Food/carb intake doesn't really have a depot the way insulin does, right? That's more of a short term thing that gets processed?

Obviously I'm going to change this plan if her blood sugar starts dropping too low but please let me know if anyone sees any major concerns/risks with the way I'm handling the transition. Thanks!

Thanks for the update. Sounds like Rosemary is settling in nicely at your place. :)

We do find that dried food carbs can stay in the system for up to a few days, so you might see a delay in numbers coming down after the food changes. I'd err on the 6 cycles side of the 4-6 you have above for the food transition.

That's a big drop to +3 tonight, any chance of a test a couple hours later?

Yes I was really surprised she dropped that much. She hasn't gone for much of her dry food that I've seen yet since she got a full can for dinner, though I'm sure she'll snack on it later in the cycle when she gets hungry again. I have an alarm set to check her at +6 but I just checked her at +4 and got a 166 so I will also plan to stay up and get a +5 on her to see if she keeps dropping. I think based on tonight's drop, I will do half cans @ shot and at +3 for the next cycle, instead of a full can at shot. That way hopefully she'll eat a combination of LC wet and kibble at her meal time? We'll see if she obliges.

Good luck with Rosemary, it sounds like she’s doing really well! So happy to read your update.
Have a great day Kait:bighug:
