Good morning everyone,

Angie had a visit to her new vet this morning. Angie was pretty angry about being there but I thought the vet was great. She is supportive of home testing and Angie's low carb wet diet and might be checking out FDMB soon - she said that FDMB sounds like a "valuable resource".

Angie has an URI and has been proscribed doxycycline as a paste - with a dose morning and night for 10 days. It has another year left before it expires. Other than the issues with out of date doxyclyline, has anybody had any troubles with it?

We also talked about arthritis injections as these seemed to help Angie in the past. The vet usually recommends synovan. Does anyone know if this could affect blood sugar for some reason?

We shot even later today as Angie wasn't interested in having her ear jabbed. I realised that the uncooperative trend is only on her amps shots. I tried giving Angie her breakfast immediately before testing and it worked a charm. I had a purry kitty on my lap again. I can understand - I don't like doing unpleasant things before breakfast either.

Healing wishes to all sick kitties and worried humans,

Grace

Yesterday's condo is here.

Bump - I shouldn't have added a reply to yesterday's post - it went up in front of this one. I confuse you all enough with being one day ahead!

Re: 6/5 Angie amps=160 vet visit and antibiotics

Doxycycline is frequently used to treat URIs. You might ask your vet about whether it would be useful to give Angie a probiotic since diarrhea is a common side effect. Nausea and vomiting and GI upset are also common side effects.

I can't find much on the use of Synovan in cats. There's information about it's use as an injection for dogs. It appears to be glucosamine. There are lots of people here who use glucosamine with or without chondroitin for their kitties with arthritis. An over the counter variety that's available here is Cosequin. Adequan or Dasequin are prescription forms that are commonly used. I think Synovan may be available only in Australia.

I would see if you can find the meds on an Australian website and look up the ingredients. It's the only way to make sure there's no sugar.

Thanks Sienne,

I'll look into it. I was giving her glucosamine but I noticed that it was affecting her blood sugar. I'll find an option with out sugars in it - if a lot of people use it then clearly the glucosamine itself isn't the issue.

Poor kitty - those side effects don't sound like fun. I'll ask about the pro-biotic.

Re: 6/5 Angie amps=160 vet visit and antibiotics

In Canada, our equivalent to Adequan is called Cartrophen. The main ingredient is pentosan polysulfate, which is also in Synovan. The other ingredients in Synovan are:
- acetyl glucosamine (N-acelygucosamine)
- benzyl alcohol (less than 2%)

Cartrophen is also available in Australia. I've used it with success with an arthritic kitty. Maybe ask you vet why she prefers Synovan?

I just checked the Novartis website on Adequan canine (which is what is used off label for cats) and it says "for US residents only".

Great you have a supportive vet! :-D

Re: 6/5 Angie amps=160 vet visit and antibiotics

Hi Grace

I'm sorry Angie has a URI. Poor baby!

If the doxycycline is a paste, I wonder if it is compounded? If it is, I would ask if any kind of sweetener, including maltodextrin, have been added. Some say maltodextrin is ok for diabetics but it can raise BG.

I hope she's feeling ok! Poor lovely!

Re: 6/5 Angie amps=160 vet visit and antibiotics

Hi Wendy - I think the vet said that they use either Synovan or Cartrophen but I had forgotten the second word so I only posted about the first.

Hi Marje - the doxycycline paste is called "VibraVet 100 Paste" it is packaged, not compounded. I can't find the ingredients anywhere just the active ingredients, "non-hazardous flavouring ingredients" and "other non-hazardous ingredients". That could well mean sugars - hazardous to whom?

Thanks for your help,

Grace

I couldn't find any info on the VibraVet 100 Doxycyline paste ingredients (beyond the active ingredients). I called Pfizer, who make it, and left messages but got no response. I decided not to give it to her tonight and to call the vet in the morning and ask if I can swap to tablets just in case. I'll also ask about probiotics at the same time.

Thanks for all your help!

Goodnight
