Hi All,

Sorry it has been awhile since my last post. Osha has been doing ok, but her numbers aren't great. I've been stressed with trying to find a job and I think that makes my patience with Osha a little on the short side. I miss the way she was before diabetes. She used to be a snuggle bug, but since the diagnosis she will only snuggle occasionally. The food craziness and waking me up every night is also really getting on my nerves. I feel bad that she thinks she is starving all the time. I hate having to put her in "kitty jail" (my bedroom) anytime I am cooking or eating anything. She meows and scratches at the door to get out the entire time. If I don't put her away, she will snatch the food right out of your hand or plate. And of course, waking me up every night for food is really bothering me. The stress of not having any income in three weeks means I absolutely need more sleep to get through my day, but she just won't let me.

On the positive, my daughter graduates from 6th grade in three weeks and she has done a fantastic job this year. I am looking forward to her band and choir concert next week. My mom continues to heal but still needs a job herself. I have an amazing man who loves me and my family.

I hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable Sunday.

Osha Osha Osha! A gal after Bubba's own heart wanting to eat all the time. What if when you are home you break up her meals into even times a day. Maybe eating every 4 hours will keep her more satisfied. It did with Bubba. Before that , I would find him up surfing the kitchen counters for something to eat.

She is still wobbling around from her last green. Maybe this will be her flat yellow cycle.

Glad she is doing well otherwise. You have a lot going on and I hope that the new job will fall into place. I love the way you always go back to what you are grateful for. :bighug:

Congrats to your daughter. It's a rite of passage moving into Jr. High. Hope the her concert is wonderful as I am sure it will be. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Oh Osha you really don't need to eat all the time!
Amanda, I'm not sure how often you feed Osha but can you use an auto feeder? A lot of us use the Petsafe 5.....it has 5 dishes and can hold up to 8 (I think) programmed times.

I hope Osha comes down for you soon. Maybe with the flat yellow today, you'll see some action tonight. I hope you and your mom can find a job soon. Congrats on your daughter's 6th grade graduation. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I am willing to try anything to stop the food madness. Sometimes she will start yelling for food just 30 minutes after eating. :arghh:

Crossing my fingers she has some movement tonight. The yellow is adding to my crankiness.

Osha is the gal who drug her food safe around and broke into it and broke two of her teeth.

Yep! That's my girl! She could open it with her paw so I started using duct tape to close it after I would fill it up. Then she started dragging it around the living room and broke both of her canines. Those are some super expensive canines she has now!!

I have child proof locks on any cabinet that contains food and the trash. I also had to start keeping the dish sponge in a container because she would eat that as well.

The added stress in my life right now is just making all of this more annoying.

I'm sorry you're going through a rough patch right now, Amanda. I thought Teasel was bad for taking cans that I was soaking before recycling out of my kitchen sink but Osha wins by a mile! Good luck finding a job for the summer months.

Yep! She would win the gold medal if it was anything involving food. She even learned how to open the zipper on my lunch box, so I have to lock that up when I come home from work.

I am just thinking out loud. I wonder why she has become so, so food obsessed. I wonder if she is missing some vitamin or something. Go you give any B12 (Methylcobalamin)? I wonder if kitty Prozac (or similar) would help? Maybe a higher protein food?

Are you trying to stay with teaching? Hopefully something will come up since the end of the year is when most move or change.

I don't give her any extra vitamins. I have often suspected that she has acro which is causing her to be food obsessed. I never thought of adding any vitamins or prozac. This all started shortly after her diabetes diagnosis. She is a healthy weight, so she doesn't need more food. I don't know about a higher protein food....maybe?

Yes, I am trying to stay with teaching. It is what I love and what I know. I have my masters in elementary ed and I am licensed in Virginia to teach Pre-K to 6th grade. Obviously at this point I will take anything that pays the bills, but I would love to remain as a teacher. I have a couple of follow up interviews this week, so I am going to try my best!

That is my thought too. In the early days of Neko's dx, I had to lock the kitchen doors if we were preparing food. She would counter surf for anything, even bread starter! I switched Neko to raw food, and although there was less volume, it seemed to be more filling for her. I did have to make sure I didn't have my fingers between her and her food. Liz found out the hard way that treats needed to be tossed instead of offered in the hand.

Good luck with the job hunt, I hope you find something soon. :bighug:

Acromegaly is caused by a benign tumour on the pituitary. It is considered an endocrine disease. The acro tumour causes excess growth hormone to be sent out, and the growing body needs more food. Think teenage boys during their growth spurts.

I knew about it before this forum but didn't know it could happen in cats. And I didn't know what caused it.

As some might know- a lot of Cartoon characters are based on real-life people. However when such a bizarre character as Shrek is actually based on a real person- then we can not let that pass without writing about it!

Maurice Tillet was a French pro wrestler born in 1903. As a child he had a completely normal appearance and Tillet was nicknamed “The Angel” due to his angelic face. He was highly intelligent, allegedly speaking 14 languages and being quite gifted in prose and Chess. He finished law school but always aspired to be an actor. However, in his twenties Maurice developed acromegaly, a condition that made his bones grow uncontrollably large (the same disease that Andre the Giant suffered). It caused him to quit his career as a lawyer as he felt people would not accept his appearance in the courtroom. Now you must think- that must have put him down? Think again! He actually headed the exact opposite of down, by going to the United States and taking advantage of his condition.

One in four diabetic cats has acromegaly. Not all have high doses. The RVC study of a large number of diabetic cats that found out the 1/4 number, found them with doses from 1 unit to 35 units, and an average of 7 units. There is some suspicion that this condition is caused by PDBE's, possibly in combination with a genetic factor. The RVC (Royal Veterinary College) is now working with researchers in human acromegaly. Paul posted a link to an article about it. A minority of human acros get diabetes.
