Just received this morning's call from the hospital - gees, why is it that every minute waiting seems like an hour?!!! Tash is fine and gobbling up her food. But I have a few questions:

Last night they upped her Lantus dose to 2U (woah) she was in the 700's at pre shot. They are NOT giving her "R" just the Lantus right now.

***Could her numbers be so high because she is bouncing? --- Can't understand why she is going SO high on so much insulin? Or, is this vet stress - but could that cause such HIGH numbers?

+++going forward, if I need to periodically feed her LC DRY to get her to eat has anyone had any experience with the following:

YOUNG AGAIN

MERRICK BEFORE THE GRAIN #1CHICKEN DRY CAT FOOD

Yes, I KNOW that she SHOULD be eating wet but I want something in my back pocket in case she won't eat. Anyone know the carbs in these foods or have other suggestions? Tashie is a picky eater but she NEEDS to eat!

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

If J.D. doesn't want to eat, after trying freeze dried toppings, and FortiFlora, and different flavors, and everything else, I will sometimes add some kibbles of Young Again on top of J.D.'s wet food to get him to eat.

There are several people who have used Young Again. It is low carb. I would keep it in the freezer, though. From what Jill/Alex mentioned to me, it has more moisture in it so it may be prone to spoiling more quickly if you're not going to be feeding it with regularity.

From the numbers the vet has provided you, it's likely that you're seeing a bounce. Tashie dropped from the 500s to the 200s yesterday and was in green numbers the previous day. That's a big drop an it likely triggered a bounce.

Also, 2.0u is NOT a lot of insulin. It may be more than what you were giving Tashie but in the grand scheme of feline diabetes, that is by no means a big dose. The best dose of insulin for any cat is what the cat needs. It always helps to remember that one of the best ways to combat ketones is insulin.

For what it's worth, Sienne said it best when she said that 2u isn't a whole lot of insulin. I'm currently giving Blackie that amount right now, and more than likely she'll stay on it a bit longer until she decides otherwise.

All in all, the high # could be a combination of stress with being at the vet's (Blackie goes very high when at the vet's too), and a bounce. When Tashie gets back at home, and gets into a routine of being regularly tested, and medicated, and fed, her #s will begin to improve. It will take time, though, and how much time will depend on what Tashie decides. This can't be rushed, unfortunately. Good luck, and welcome! :-D

Hi - I did try the Young Again for my diabetic, extremely picky cat, Bob and he did not like it. My other 2 kitties seemed to like it though, but they will eat anything. I'm currently trying to transition him to wet and it's not pretty. So, I wish you luck on finding something for your beautiful cat!!

Great to hear that Tashie is doing so much better. Bouncing, vet stress, pain all push the BGs up. Right now they are concerned on getting enough insulin into her to combat the ketones.

Thanks guys! Boris is a bit "off" so gave him some of that Benepack Gel Pen stuff - never used it before but vet gave it to me after he had some of the kitten food that was too rich. It's supposed to be good for stress as well?

He is my most "sensitive" child, had a long talk with him and told him I went to see Tash - and reminded him of the time when he was in the hospital for 7 days and then got to come home (even if Tashie did HISS at him)

Marinating boneless breasts of chicken in Wishbone - JUST FOR HIM - as that is his very most favorite in the universe - told DH he needs to grill it later on - got a raised eyebrow but he knows better than to dis me right now

I'll get a 2PM (est) update on Tashie - about 2 1/2 hours or so

THANKS for all your support!

afternoon b,

I love your posts......they always make me smile! I see so much of myself in you.......both worry warts with somewhat tolerant DHs.

making your DH drive to hospital to see if the building was hit by lightning.....priceless. that is so something that I would do too.....and my Dh would only do this if it was my 25th anniversary! and that has come and gone, so I don't have any leverage right at the moment .............congrats by the way!!

yesterday, I picked up some hamburgers at mcdonalds and brought them home to dh, who looked inside bag to find his quarterpounder, and 2 plain hamburgers. he said: "what is the 2nd plain burger for?.....oh, the cat I suppose." I just kinda smiled .......and then I got the infamous raised eyebrow. ;-)

hahahah~ well Tom didn't get the bun, and just half the burger......it is 100% protein right.

sorry to read about your weight loss.....again, I too, am a stress starver. I have very little appetite during kitty's sickness....just always ready for that ball to drop. I always say NEVER NEVER curse a good appetite!! whether it is yours or your cats.

loved the beautiful photo yesterday of your baby...........so adorable.

best wishes to you and yours this Sunday......

good health to your Tashie: when she is good......you are funnier! and that makes my day brighter.

I do recall a member who fed only Young Again and got their cat OTJ with that....I can't recall who it was (reading all old/current posts constantly) but hopefully they will respond with their experience
