Hi, we went to a vet more versed in treating feline diabetes. It was a relief to be encouraged to do the home testing. She wants a curve run at home and sent to her. She recommended the Alpha Trek, vs. my ReliOn. But, I just bought 100 test strips, so I think I will keep up with that for a while.

She recommended her prescription dry food for free feeding my whole large crew. I am going to continue to figure out the food situation. (I have read here and on Facebook about vet prescription diet, and it doesn't sound good for anyone bit the vet).

The other thing she said, that the other vet never even mentioned, was that he needs a dental cleaning. I asked about how much, and they quoted up to $1000 (!). The vet we usually see is about half that. Does anyone see any harm in having the dental done there?

Sounds like you got mixed messages at the new vet. I am glad she supports home testing. However, I would stick with your Relion as the strips are much cheaper. The dosing methods we use here were written for human meters so it's much easier to figure out what to do for the dose if you are using a human meter. I would also run screaming away from any dry food - it's just not good for cat's at all. Dr. Lisa Pierson, a vet nutritionist, has a great website on feline nutrition (cainfo.org) that tells you about why dry food is no good. She also has a recent post here about lower carb dry foods. You are right that the vet foods help the vet's pocketbook. A low carb wet food (or raw) is best for the crew.

ETA: Dry food in the picture can mean much higher insulin doses are needed.

The $1000 seems quite high for a vet cleaning, unless there are extractions. It is best to go to a vet that will do dental x-rays before the dental, as many dental issues can linger below the gum line and are not visible by eye. If there is inflammation/infection, that can make regulation difficult.
