Tigger sure likes Pink.
I know for a fact he does not like the ear poking and wonder if that isn't nerving him up a bit and jumping the number slightly?

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

Morning. Another cheese head here.

I'm new here too so not sure about the BG going up but I know they don't like the pokes. Pepper is getting to the point now that they don't seem to bother him so much, but the cotton ball tickles his ear and he sure doesn't like that.

I already know everyone is going to ask if you are feeding dry or wet/low carb food. Dry food really brings the BG level up. That could be part of the high numbers if you haven't went to wet/low carb yet.

They will also ask you to fill out a profile on Tigger. Not sure where that is but someone will tell you as they come on today.

Have you read all the stickies yet? There is so much information in there that you need at the beginning.

It would also be helpful if you would put a little info in your signature, that's easy to do. Click on "User Control Panel" at the top right of the screen, click on “Profile” on the left side, then “Edit signature” on the left side. Put your information in the box and click “Submit” at the bottom of the page.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

Another Cheesehead?? ;-)
Did you survive the storms last night? lol

I've read the heck out of the stickies and Tiggers been on a wet only diet for a week now.
I will try and update my profile as the majority of my posts were in the Main Message Board and then I came over here once I started getting blood draws and could update the spreadsheet.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

Welcome!! We have not stopped by before. Sounds like you are getting the hang of the pokies. My cat, Tarragon, is a very skittish kitty so I had to make it a special time with him and I. Try to find a poking area in your house that is quiet and always be in that area when you do it. I always sit on the couch in our formal living room and put Tarragon between me and the couch arm. This way he doesn't realize I am holding him down. Then he gets extra loves and a treat when we are done.

Good luck! You are doing great!

Melissa

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

Thanks Melissa, I'm trying!
Like I stated once before in a thread, i'm a single guy that now feels like a single dad!

There's alot to this stuff and definately a challenge to get everything that needs to be done, done.
But, he really does seem to be happier and healthier after one week. But man is he a chatter box now!
He acts like he's starving and maybe i'm not giving him enough of the FF. Still trying to figure this all out and determine what his optimal weight is so I don't over feed him, but make sure he's getting enough. I posted some pics on the main board, but here they are. Wondering if 3 cans of FF is enough for him? He's probably 13 lbs and was up to 16 in the past. His bladder weight added alot to his belly size before. That is now close to normal size.

He's definately not obese and most people are surprised he's diabetic since he's only 4 1/2 and not severely overweight. But i'm finding out that doesn't have a lot to do with it.
He used to be on the Royal Canine Diabetic DS and was a Free Feeder. Am i correct in what I think I read about that food? 23 carbs?? And its a Diabetic Dry Food?
Wow, that's horrible compared to the 3-5 he's getting with FF.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

Oh what a cutie!!

We used to feed science diet dry before and it had something like 20% in carbs. Of course, we thought we were doing the right thing by buying a higher end, but all dry is bad. Tarragon went through a phase where he was crying all the time because he was hungry once we switched to wet. I think that 3-4 (3 oz) cans of fancy feast is what they suggest. Tarragon started out eating 4 cans and now, since being on insulin for awhile and getting somewhat regulated, he eats about 3. We have another kitty, Turnup, who is not diabetic. I still free feed. I do add quite a bit of water to their food to make sure they get their water intake, help it fill their bellies more, and keep it moist while I am at work. I would say that if you give one can for breffis (with some water added) and then put another one (with water) down before you leave for the day, Tigger should be good to go until you get home in the evening. Give a can for supper (again with water added) and maybe a can for overnight? That is how I do it and after awhile, he doesn't always need that night time can or just half a can.

I was determined that I would never have a life again and be able to keep up with the shot and feeding schedule. It gets better, really. It is just very overwhelming at first and you second guess yourself on everything and watch every little thing they do.

Good luck and know that you are not alone. We have all been there and, somedays, it feels like I still am.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

Thanks again Melissa, that helps out alot actually.
My feeding regimine was something like this
1 can for both of them to split when I first wake up after I test and then I give insulin.
1 can for both of them to split just before I leave for work.

1 can for both of them to split when I get home from work (3pm or so)
1 can for both of them to split when I around supper time (5pm or so)
1 can for both of them to split when I go to bed

When I say both of them, its Tigger and Momma and Tigger eats more than she does. So its 5 cans/day and he is craving more but I was hesistant to increase that.
So he's probably getting 3 cans and Momma 2 so I could add another can in the mix. Cool Cool, Tigger is gonna love you!
LOL

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

OK. What I had put was for one cat since I didn't know you have two. Since we have two, below is what I actually do:

2 cans for both of them to split when I first wake up after I test and give insulin (5:30 am).
1 can for both of them to split just before I leave for work.
1 can for both of them to split when I get home from work (3:30pm)
2 cans for both of them to split at supper time after I test and give insulin (5:30pm)
1 can for both of them to split when I go to bed

Like Tigger, Tarragon eats more than Turnup. She eats like a bird, so I think he is getting 4 and she is getting 3. Sometimes, I don't have to put out the bed one if there is still enough left from supper to combine and add some more water to. I really think that adding the water has helped a lot since water makes them feel more full. Tarragon had a string of UTIs after he was diagnosed and I read to add water to their food to make sure they get enough liquid. He hasn't had a UTI since.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

Another thing you can do is give him/them boiled chicken cubes between meals for snacks and they are great for poke rewards too. A dice sized cube or 2 have almost no carbs or cals. Pepper loves them and it takes the edge off the hungry feeling for him. I buy skinned, boneless ones, boil them, cut them up, and freeze them. I keep a small hand full in the fridge and warm them slightly (room temperature) before giving them to him. You can also use the water off boiling them for adding to his food.

Those storms were terrible!!! 70-80 mile an hour winds, quarter size hail, lightening, and thunder!!! My back yard is a lake!!! Poor Pepper was so freaked, he hates storms.

For those not from Wisconsin: Cheese head is the name people have given to people living in Wisconsin, we're the "dairy state". If you watch football, the triangle shaped yellow "hats" fans wear are supposed to be a wedge of cheese.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

I may be totally wrong about this but wouldn't feeding 2 hours before testing show a food spike at your PMPS and not a true reading?

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

I do his PMPS check right when i get home from work (between 3pm - 4pm) before i feed him anything.
Then I feed him immediately have poking his ear and then I dose him.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

That was going to be my next question. When do you test for PMPS since you didn't have it listed.

My question about food spike was for Melissa. Sorry, I should have "quoted" that. I'm still pretty new at all this.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

We feed at least 2 -3 hours before the evening check or +9 / +10 area and it is a snack. You will need to learn your own kitty. Tarragon shows a food spike within an hour usually so anything after +10 we would have to wait.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

Thank you. Like I said I'm still pretty new at this and so I'm asking questions about everything. Don't know if you don't ask. ;-)

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

Not a problem! I will also say that I am a habitual tester so I usually test right when I get home before snack if I can and then again at shot time to watch for a sudden spike.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

As you can see from my SS I am working into one too. I would be testing more uniformly if not for being in the middle of moving across town. Give me 2 weeks and my SS will start looking totally different.

Re: 6/22 Tigger AMPS 348

"Sometimes, I don't have to put out the bed one if there is still enough left from supper to combine and add some more water to."

Yeah, that doesn't happen at my place. I swear Tigger licks the bowl like a Hoover Super Vac.
lol

PMPS much better, 311
I have also gave him an extra half can of the FF and I think that is going to make a difference on his hunger cravings.

I would like to be able to go into my kitchen without being verbally assaulted every time!

Sometimes Daddy just needs to make a samich in peace!!

Good one!

They do make sure they are heard don't they. Pepper now meows when his shot time alarm goes off and trots over to the bathroom demanding to get the poke over with so he can eat. And they say you can't teach cats to do anything.

Uhh, that's a negative Ghost Rider.. lol

And to whoever suggested I convert him over to wet food, Thanks. No, seriously, Thanks. cat(2)_steam
Its to the point now that If I make a sudden move he gets excited its dinner time..
lol

I sneezed and I swear he jumped to his feet thinking it was feeding time!

Now if I could just get those pink numbers down. Its only been a week though..
Its a marathon, not a sprint. I know I know.. lol

Ah that stinks! They can hear everything I swear. Tarragon can be dead asleep at the opposite end of the house so I tiptoe to the kitchen, turn around, and there he is meowing. I hope it gets better!

We are still fighting the pinks. It is a long haul for sure.

How are the pokes going? There is some neosporin ointment with a numbing agent in it. If you put some of that on his ear it might help the pain and helps the blood bead up better.

Yeah, the hearing is incredible!

Pokes are going better, the one tonight was first stab done!
And the reading was 311. I think some of the numbers are higher when I struggle and he gets anxious to get outta dodge.

He clawed me the other day, drew some blood so I tested myself. Came back at 133. I know i'm approaching the Type II levels myself.
Man, my pet is definately taking after his owner. lol

I don't think I have said hello to you yet, so welcome!

Tigger has been on this dose for 8 cycles, and it looks to me like he has room for a dose increase unless something changes by morning. I would go to 2.5 units because he has mostly stayed in pink, but if you would rather go slower then 2.25 would work too.

Hi Libby!

I'm still trying to find shringes with half doses on them. Once I find them I will up the dose to 2.5 and see what happens.
Hoping to find them tomorrow, going to my dads place and that is where I get the Lantus and i'll try and get there before they close and see if they have any.

Heading to bed, hoping for yellow in the morning!

if there's a walmart near your dad's they usually have the Relion U100 syringes marked with half units in stock.
hope you can find them. i agree with libby. it's time to take the dose up to 2.5 units.
