Dear friends,
Where does the time go?
Life here in the land of Sootie's Tribe has hardly been a whirlwind but it has been full of hard impact stumble bumbles (eg, I guess I have to return to NS to revisit the dreaded discussion about the second surgery that truly will be a surgery from hades with limited success prognosis), a new round of dental vet specialist visits for Bella who then had major dental surgery (extractions) two weeks ago, Azalea with some ups and downs but stalwart as ever and loving her acupuncture, and oh yes...last week a disastrous reaction to colonoscopy prep (you don't want to know!
) that has taken a few days for me to recoup from. Good thing it's every 5 years.
Weather has been quirky in recent weeks, a couple of days in the 90's followed by rain, fog, sun, temperate days cool nights, more rain more fog. One night in the midst of it all an amazing thunder and heat lightning storm that crackled the skies.
Our little fox visitors who romped and raced about in our back yard seem to have come of age to move on and seek new territories, this being the time of year when they tend to do so. I hope that is the case and that they are safe and in good health. Mange and uninformed people seem to be their major risks around here. Fisher cats (killer weasels) haven't been sited around here lately. That's a relief.
Last week my dear CIL (cousin-in-law) and I began a rug hooking class together.
I've wanted to relearn the art for years, particularly to properly repair my Danish grandmother's beautiful rag hooked rugs. When I was little, I used to sit with her and watch intently while she looped row-by-row, pulling fabric strips from bags full of years of waste-not fabric cut fir her purposes. It seemed like magic to me how she chose which strips went where, designing the effect as she went along. I'm sure she had it all planned out visually but it seemed like magic to me. She had the patience of Job when she let me join in and practice. Ah, the sweetness of memories.
A bit of local nautical excitement here during the weekend. A schooner race on Sunday was on in hopes the fog would clear. Then it was off because of fog. Unfortunately a 1926 96-ft schooner, the Alabama, went aground in a touchy spot at the mouth of the river by "the spindle." Did the same thing about 7-8 years ago but hit mud then instead of rock this time. It's a touchy area bc the channel is narrow there, and depending on the vessel's draft and the tide cycle, it's a grabber. Years ago, with Steve's lobster boat, he and I pulled another schooner, the Harvey Gamage, off the same spot when she went aground in mud.
Here are some photos that I hope you'll enjoy:
Azalea (of course!), one of which is at recent acupuncture;
The initial design (not my design drawing but that I found on vintageprintables) for my hexoganol rug hooked table top runner;
The Alabama aground.
With heaps of love, hugs and vines for all in need and in healing.
