GA 6/16 Update on Aurora

Hi Everyone

I know I don't post here daily or much at all - it's my 2nd time around with Aurora and her diabetes and have just been managing things at home with her and not posting. I have her very well controlled thanks to this group, she's on a small microdose of insulin 2x per day. I wanted to thank everyone for always helping us. I do have some sad news to report. Aurora has been loosing weight over the past few months - took her about 2 months ago to the vet for a routine check up and they said her kidneys were starting to decline - we started her on sub q fluids at home 2x per week and a supplement in her food. This past week she started to pee on the rug which has happened at times when she's had a UTI. I took her yesterday for another check and asked them to x ray her kidneys so we could have a baseline of how they looked and unfortunately they found something on x ray that was concerning. They did a fatty ultrasound I think it was called and found she has a large tumor in her abdominal area. They said it's quite close to or could be on her pancreas. She lost another pound in a month and a half despite eating. The vet isn't sure if she has longer than a month. We are beyond heart broken. I am letting her eat whatever she wants - she loved dry food and she's getting some of that again and we will just keep loving her until she tells us it's time. I can't stop crying. It starts, it stops and the flood starts again. So far she wants to eat and drink and wants brushing and love - I can't imagine our home without her presence.

I'm so sorry. I can't imagine what you're going through.

What a gorgeous girl she is.

Cherish what time you have left. Take lots of pictures, video, grab a lock of her fur, and take some impressions of her feet in some salt dough.

I sent you a pm. Would see an oncologist ASAP. With Tiffany I had to go through the ER. Many vets give a poor prognosis and don’t suggest treatment. You need to know what type of cancer and types of treatment. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I am so sorry to hear the news. :bighug::bighug: If you can see an oncologist, it would be nice to know if there are options, or at least ways to keep her quality of life good while you can. Pass on some scritches from me to sweet Aurora.

Thank you Wendy. I have a call into the vet, I wasn't listening very well when she was talking yesterday, I need to write it all down so I have a better understanding. I believe she said isn't not operable and we are just loving her at home until she tells us she's ready to go. Not sure if seeing someone for another opinion would change the outcome but I will ask.

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear this about Aurora. :( I had just posted yesterday about Rex. He had kidney issues as well.

Keep us posted. I'm sure Aurora will love getting whatever she wants and all the pets she can stand. :bighug:

I spoke to the vet. I re confirmed and she said the tumor is quite large, aprox size of my fist, and it's central abdomen amoungst her intestines but not in the intestines if that makes sense. She said it's fiberous and likely has adhesions. She said I could seek out a surgery consult at the specialty center. That would involve numerous views to be taken but she said typically when she has referred out similar cases they are inoperable. Also, she is older and a full abdominal surgery would be painful and I don't think there is much benefit at this point.
I asked about the tumor rupturing and she said she hasn't seen that happen so thought it was a lower risk.
I asked about pain management and she didn't think she was experiencing pain when she saw her at the clinic
As for timeline - we just don't know. Right now she is eating, drinking and grooming and doing her usual things - they said eventually she could get more fluid in her belly and that will make her feel worse and eventually stop eating. She said it could be a month, two months, six months we just don't now so this will be a day by day monitoring. She will let us know when it's time to go to momma cat. Until then, we will just continue with her routine and keep her as happy and comfortable as possible. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. My wish would be that momma cat calls her home in her sleep and she goes peacefully that way.

You are doing the right thing, Nicole. Just make her as comfortable and loved as possible. We all pray that our beloved pets go peacefully without having to have the stress and fear of euthanasia - for her and you. I will be praying for this outcome for you and your beautiful girl and that she will experience no pain.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Everyone
This will be my final goodbye - wanted to let everyone know that today Aurora passed peacefully in the morning and is now with her momma cat. The past week has not been easy - she stopped eating last week on Wed and no matter what I offered to her she just didn't want to eat. I am truly amazed at her strength and beauty - even after not eating for 5 days, she was a lady and so proper and somehow managed not once but twice to go down two flights of stairs to the basement to use her regular litter box ( despite having one right on the 2nd floor for her ). She was proud, and smart and the best patient ever. In Aurora's honor and as a thank you to the group I have offered to help guide other diabetic patients to get started at my vet clinic - I told them they could give my name and number and I can help others to get started and get them to the group here for extra support. You were all an incredible resource to us and helped to get Aurora into remission once. A heartfelt thank you so very much to everyone who helped, or posted a kind word. God bless everyone of you and your kitties!
Love Nicole and Aurora

Fly free sweet Aurora...go chase those butterflies with your momma now...cat_wings>o
