Re: 5/29 Johnny AMPS 247 ~ +3 (190)

He's doing really well. He's a changed cat since starting on the insulin and more himself. He still has longer periods of lower-energy than he used to, but I think he's building back up nicely.

He's increasingly had more periods of "Johnny" play. He's always liked to jump after balls thrown against the wall. He's a natural goalie and twists and turns in the air. 99% of the time he regains control of the ball and hits it back to you, all from different angles. In the couple months prior (before dx), he'd gradually lost interest in doing that. At first, he'd mew at us while standing by the wall to ask to play, but they when you tossed it, he seemed to realize that he couldn't do what he wanted to and would just sit there. Later, he just stopped asking and was kind of a loungey boy all the time, sleeping lots and eating/drinking even more. Now, he's back to his old tricks. :D Does a mama's heart good! I thought the changes were just aging, or maybe that's what I hoped. But, I think he just didn't have the energy and the weight loss had affected his ability to do what he wanted. So glad to see him back to having fun. He also had become pretty grumbly to the other two cats for no reason ("oh no you DIDN'T just walk past me!!"), which was unusual. Now, he seems pretty much back to his laid-back self.

And the poo dances are back to being creative and energetic. What's a poo dance, you ask? He celebrates after he poos! Runs here and there, jumps up on a table, down from the table, up the stairs, down the stairs with frequent, "look at me!" MEOWs. He really choreographs them and they are all different. :) We think it's because he feels so much lighter. Haha. He'd be happy to perform at an OTJ party sometime. ;-)

His appetite is great and overall he just seems glad to be feeling better. I think he could do without the ear pricks, but I like to think he's realizing that they lead to him feeling better. He's much more cooperative than our other two would be in this situation and we're glad for that. And with the wet food, he hardly drinks any water. That's a huge change. He would drink 1/2 a bowl in the weeks leading up to his dx.

nice greens! johnny just needed a little shed building time on this dose. looking good!
poo dances... i'm so glad i don't have the only cats who do this. brianna and cadwyk hit the floor running, jumping and climbing right after a bm.
it's hilarious!

Two poo dancers, Jill? Wow! They are so funny, aren't they?! We love them. Our others get more playful/frisky, but you can always count on a show from Johnny.

Thanks for the chart compliments. Is there benefit from me taking +6 through +10 checks today to try and catch his nadir? If it's helpful, I'm all for it.

Re: 5/29 Johnny AMPS 247 ~ +3 (190) +6 (85) +7 (79)

hmm, looks to me like he's holding rather steady, but i think i'd get a +8 to see if he's dropping at all...

Re: 5/29 Johnny AMPS 247 ~ +3 (190) +6 (85) +7 (79)

this is what I get for suggesting last night that he might need a dose increase soon. I guess he had to prove me wrong.

That's ok, this is something I love to be wrong about.

Thanks, guys! We're feeling really good about these numbers. So glad we found this place and were advised to start lower on the Lantus ladder. Can't wait to share this chart with our vet (who still thinks we're doing 2u AND hasn't checked in since last week (after I sent her our chart and before the stepdowns...she said maybe a dosage decrease was on the way....ya THINK?)

Re: 5/29 Johnny AMPS 247 ~ +3 (190) +6 (85) +7 (79)

Is there a number at which you'd feel uncomfortable shooting .5 at an AMPS? We're probably a ways off, but I just want to be prepared.

PMPS 199
.5u
+3 (60)

I'm wondering if we should be on high alert here? We don't have many good +PMPS numbers to go on, but 60 seems awfully low, especially since he's been eating up a storm since the PMPS (low carb FF), at least 3/4 of a can.

Off to read the "Dear Mom" post again...

did he eat after the 60? You can feed him a couple tsp of low carb food. I would test again in 30 minutes to see where he's going.

He didn't eat after the 60. We opened up a new can and he ate 1-1.5 tsp of another LC. We'll test him 30 min after (20 min from now).

iS jOHNNY ok?? lOOKS LIKE HER IS DOING GREAT!!--We would love a poo dancer at our parties--
Didnt see anymore posts after midnite--OK guess he's fine-

PMPS +199
+3 (60)
+4 (87)

I realize these are numbers that many hope for (and am grateful), but I still feel pretty green here. I was concerned by the 60 because his lowest is usually +8ish, and we've had a few low nights (30s) around here this week. Seems like he's on the up and up.

If you can get a test in at +4.5 to make sure Johnny is on the rise, that would be great. Some LC food should also help him to surf. Post when you get the next number.

it looks like he's good, I usually aim for 2 rising numbers before bed when the cat is green, so maybe test in 1/2 hour, OR you can set an alarm for a +6 test.

+4.5 ~ 76

So, down a little from 85 at +4.

I'm not too worried. I know I can counter-act with some HC if necessary. I just don't want to create a bounce. Can you do that with food alone or just with insulin?

Neither. The bounce is the result of the liver's response to low numbers. It's a built in protective mechanism. Some kitties do it ever so well (like Gabby) and others aren't very bouncy. Feeding can help to slow a drop and, hopefully, cause less of a bounce. Johnny hasn't dropped that much from PMPS, so I wouldn't worry. I'd feed some LC or MC to keep his numbers bumped up. Given the drop, I'd test in 30 min.

Up to 90 now. And new food out to eat. I think we're safe to head to bed. Boy, it sucks to be scared by good numbers! Thanks for the advice tonight.
