Happy Wednesday!!! We wish strong healing vines for all sugarbabies, civvies, and relatives who need them today.

Gracie was stretched out on the day bed in one of the guest rooms with Tobey this morning when I got up. She had gotten up from our bed earlier. She was doing her usual headbutt somersaults and loud purring when I gave her scritches. She and Tobey are always together....it so warms our hearts. Since her numbers have been up, we haven't seen her wrestling with him like she does when her numbers are down but they have played a little chase. This is Gracie's lowest AMPS in 8 days....unknown if it is because of the new dose or more likely because she is breaking the bounce. Mike will be here today to monitor her very closely.

Question: Yesterday the vet gave us two unopened vials of lantus which another patient had given her because her diabetic dog had passed away from another condition. They are new in the box and expire in July, 2012. My concern is I don't know how they were handled before I got them ....I'm assuming the lady kept them in the frig as the vet had them in the frig but I don't know how long they might have been out from the lady's house to the vet; they were probably out of the frig for 15 mins for me to get them home. I also don't know what temp the lady stored them at. Two vials of lantus...that's alot of money .....so when my pens are done, should I just go ahead and one....they are clear, no floaties, no frosting...look good. I'm assuming the worst that could happen is her numbers go up. But should I worry about any tampering...they looked totally sealed and looked as if the boxes had not even been opened. Thank you!!

Teddi continues to improve although the methimazole has started to upset her tummy again. We increased her aloe for her tummy; vet thinks she just needs a little time to adjust to the MMI. Mom is doing fine. Glenda's mother's service is Thursday. And Tobey needs a dental which will probably happen next week. I brush his teeth religiously and they don't have much tartar but he's always had really red gums even as a kitten so they want to stay on top of it...will be doing a biopsy to see if he has stomatitis or something else going on there...paws crossed he's just got sensitive gums.

Off to TBP. Don't know about visiting condos today...it's a madhouse there. Have a super day.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 LANTUS QUESTION

Hi guys .. glad to hear that gracie could be breaking her bounce today .. as far as the lantus goes, I guess I would use it and just monitor her numbers (like you need to be told that :-D ) That was awfully generous of the vet to give you that, Im sure it will be fine .. the previous owner probably handled it with care like we do .. Have a great day guys!

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 LANTUS QUESTION

Hi Guys....great score on the lantus. Yep, I'd go ahead and use it. Might put it in the rotation first though instead of last. That way if for so reason it is questionable you'll have a known back-up. Most likely it is fine though.

Nice to see Gracie breaking her bounce, Tobey feeling better and the rest of the stuff getting its proper place.

Take care you all are in our prayers.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 LANTUS QUESTION

Good morning, Looks as though Gracie could be clearing that B****e!! I hope so. ;-) .
I agree, The lantus should be fine, but only time and using it will tell. I would also hope that the lady handled like we do here.. You're right that is a lot of money and i hope it works just fine when it comes time to open them

Glad to hear that Teddi is continuing to get better, minor setback excluded and that Gracie and Tobey are buds.. How can it not warm the heart to see kitties being best of friends, playing and hangin out..
Have a wonderful Day ;-)

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 LANTUS QUESTION

i'd try to use it too - likely a careless person would've just tossed them. if the lady cared enough to donate them back to the vet, she appreciated the value of the insulin.

for tobey's red gums, i'm going to go back and look and see, ok, here it is:
http://clevengerscorner.com/column_details.php?topic=20070218

there is a bacteria called Bartonella's that causes cat scratch fever, also chronic gum inflammation. it's carried by fleas - somewhere i saw a map of N America with zones that had the bartonella bug in fleas - areas where fleas thrive year round have the highest percentage of cats infected with bartonella's. perhaps having tobey checked for that would give you some answers. http://www.natvetlab.com/

i may have punkin checked when i get blood drawn for the acro/iaa next week.

ETA: here's the map by zip codes: http://www.natvetlab.com/PDF/catownerbrochure.pdf the pac nw is very high, which is part of why i'm thinking to get punkin tested for this as well.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 LANTUS QUESTION

Thanks all very much. We'll give the lantus a go...but I'll finish the pen I opened first and then cycle it in.

Karrie: it's aloe extract. My vet prescribed it and she uses it all the time in cats and dogs. I appreciate the link!!! And I did specifically ask her about its toxicity to animals.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224

Marjorie - I knew you'd know and that it must have been something special. Glad you clarified too just in case someone was following along.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130

Julie: I will definitely check with my vet but I have never seen a flea around here. We're in AZ where it's hotter than you know what and not much rain. Even when I volunteered at the no-kill cat shelter for ten years, I never saw a stray or a feral come in with fleas. Even so.....it is very worth checking because Tobey was born in Nashville. I did visit the cattery and the whole place was spotless and I did not see any fleas (I was very careful to check that because I know they have fleas there) but still...you could be really right and onto something. THANK YOU!!!

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83

DH here - Yay for green. First time in green during the day in a week. I know she is clearing a bounce and has more juice on board, so watching her closely today.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83

Yea indeed for GREEN!! Way to go, Gracie! I agree that you shouldn't be afraid to use the insulin. If numbers get wonky, so be it, but if not, you have a nice gift there!

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83

Yay Gracie! Those are much better numbers! I am glad to hear that she's feeling better, that is wonderful.

I agree with the general consensus about the lantus... as long as it looks like it's in good condition, and your vet knew the woman, than I would go ahead and use it. I would try to use it when kitty is being stable (Oh Gracie...) that way you can tell if it's effective or not and I would have backup if that is possible.... but I am an overpreparererer/worrier type.

I am glad Teddi is doing better but I am sorry about her tummy... I hope that gets better soon. I hope Tobey's gums are ok... Willy gets a lot of redness in his gums sometimes and I thought he needed dental but the vet doesn't think he does (his teeth are just stained, no buildup). Maybe they both have sensitive gums!  gingivitis?

I am glad to hear your mom is doing ok and I hope your friend is doing well. I know it must be really hard...

Don't overwork yourself! Just do what you need to do and try not to spread yourself too thin!

We will be keeping you in our thoughts and sending lots of prayers and healing vines your way!!

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83 +4 80 +5 104

Yay, look at those two greens and hope Gracie keeps surfing. Glad Teddi is doing better and sorry about the tummy. Sending healing vines for Teddi for the biopsy. The Vet showed me some redness in Maggie's mouth also, and she is getting a dental on Tuesday. I hope all is well with Teddi's teeth. Glad your Mom is doing okay. You have so much going on, so please try and take care of yourself, too. Hugs.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83 +4 80 +5 104

I want to train Champ to have blues (and greens) in the daytime!! It's nice to see Gracie in better numbers today!! I just realized the other day how young she is. I know that most cats who get diabetes are overweight males, age 10 or older. Is it a different process when it's a young female? Are they are more difficult to regulate and get into remission? Just curious :-D

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83 +4 80 +5 104

So nice to see Gracie cleared the bounce and is having a beautiful day so far. Healing vines to Teddi and praying for a good outcome on the biopsy.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83 +4 80 +5 104

Great numbers there, Miss Gracie!

Hopefully Teddi will start feeling better soon, and so glad to hear your Mom is doing well!

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83 +4 80 +5 104

that's an interesting point, patti. most cats are hefty older boys and then you've got gabby & gracie who are both bouncy. i wonder if there's a connection of some sort.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83 +4 80 +5 104

Yay, green afternoon for Gracie :-D
Hi Marjorie. I agree with the others. The woman has got to know the value of the insulin. If she had two of them, she would have taken good care of them; that's big bucks to just toss around.
I also think the vet probably knows the woman well enough, to know she woudn't abuse it. Don't you think? The worst is that Gracie's numbers would reflect insulin that was toast.

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83 +4 80 +5 104

Hi guys - very nice cycle for Gracie. :-D

And FWIW, I too agree that you should be fine with the insulin. for all the reasons everyone else has stated. What a nice thing to have you vet do - wow!

Very cute story on Tobey and Gracie this morning. Ok - I want video of the somersaults.... :-D

I am glad that Teddi is doing better - i hope that is healing and draining as it should. And Tobey - dental soon? paws crossed that the redness is nothing serious, but good idea to stay on top of it.

Have a nice evening guys!

pssssttttt cabana Bean - thanks for letting us hang out there today,. ~~ Mannie

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83 +4 80 +5 104

Hey Marjorie, just checking up on you guys again to see how things are going with Teddi this evening... Green for miss Gracie! SWEEEEEEEEEEET!!! glad to see she's gettin back in the swing of things :-D

Re: 5/18 Gracie AMPS 224 +2 130 +3 83 +4 80 +5 104

Hi Marjorie and Gracie been a while since I stopped in sorry about that  hope all is well your way and Gracie is sure looking great today

Re: 5/18 Gracie PMPS 262

Thanks to all who visited today. We really appreciate it and sorry the work week doesn't allow me to do much addressing of your comments individually.

Julie: I talked to the vet today about FEBart test and when he goes in for the dental, they'll take Tobey's blood while he is under anesthesia and run some extra PCR tests inc that one. SHe said it is a very slim shot considering his lack of exposure to fleas but they can carry it and since he was born in a more flea prone area, it's worth a shot. THANK YOU!!

Gracie very slowly climbed this afternoon but her PMPS was only 14 mg/dl higher than her +10 although if she's going to have a good evening, she usually gets a second dip. But we are happy with the day!!! Hope to see more cycles like this on this new dose.

Din Din and Mike time!!

Re: 5/18 Gracie PMPS 262

All the fur kids sound like they are always keeping themselves busy with each other, they all sound so adorable. Gracie is looking great today BTW, nice to finally see some green numbers again.

You brush Tobey's teeth? I wish i could brush Leo's teeth, I tried brushing Leo's teeth last week, just to see if i could and it was a NO-GO, he tried biting the toothbrush and got kinda pissy with me. Keeping paws and fingers crossed for Tobey like you asked!

Have a great night Marje.
