(previous) 5/5 - Gryphen AMBG @ 153 / +3.5 @ 111 - what is happening? | Feline Diabetes Message Board - FDMB
Hi All. Can anyone offer some advice?
We still haven't gotten to the bottom of Gryphen's lackluster appetite or vomiting. The vomiting, though, is now similar to what is has been for years; if she doesn't eat for several hours, she vomits clear or bile (or maybe grass, if she ate that). The difference is that usually, if I leave food out, she will eat it if her stomach is upset, but she hasn't been doing that.
I've had every test at the vet that's possible for this area. Some things suggested from this group (and a kidney group on FB) are not available at my vet, and the nearest 'specialist' is at least 7 hours away.
We started transdermal famotadine on Tuesday evening, hoping to stop the AM vomiting (as that's the most common time for her...right around 4am).
Gryphen's BG numbers remain fairly stable, though she does have an occasional spike when her stomach is upset. (As an example, she was a 206 on Monday morning, but she had just been throwing at about 4:30 AM, so I know she wasn't feeling well.) The numbers are higher than I'd like, but according to posts I've found in the OTJ forum, they aren't especially concerning, as they are remaining below 200 on an AlphaTrak2 meter. I'd love to see her in the double digits, but I've only seen that a handful of times on this entire journey so far. She does go lower after she eats.
My vet said that she's not concerned with the BG numbers, but I am. My cat is obviously diabetic, and I want her to be better. I'm afraid that not re-starting the insulin once I can get her back to a regular eating pattern will just set her up for failure, but I'm nervous since my vet said her numbers are mostly in the normal range (per the clinics numbers, normal is 74-159, and she's within those 95% of the time...the AM numbers are typically the bad ones).
She does have a dental scheduled on June 14, as she has some light tartar, but the vet saw nothing concerning upon exam. I'll have them do xrays during the dental, in case there is something happening that can't be seen.
What do you all think? Should I hold off on the insulin? This whole vomiting/not eating fiasco turned in to an unscheduled OTJ trial, and we were not ready...it was too soon!!

Should I maybe wait until after the dental, and then if her numbers stay where they are, talk to the vet about going back on the insulin? Are her numbers high enough to start insulin again? It's all moot if I can't get her back on a regular eating schedule (and if she keeps throwing up in the morning), but there is so much going on with her right now, and we are not getting any answers from the vet/tests...I'm starting to get a bit overwhelmed. Thank you in advance for any input.
