Hi! I’m a cat mommy to a 14 year old Russian Blue female cat named Sophia. She was diagnosed borderline diabetic in 2021 and was started on Glipizide which worked for a time. In December 2022 she was started on Glargine insulin (1 unit 2x/day) after weight loss, excessive drinking and urination, and continued hyperglycemia. She’s now on 1.5 units 2x/day.
After not having controlled blood glucose, diarrhea to loose stool, and continued excessive thirst and drinking, I did some research and came across this site and Dr. Lisa Pierson’s site. We took Sophia off of prescription Glycobalance dry food entirely and have gone back to wet food pates at the 10% carb level and below. She seemed to improve but her blood sugar levels have dropped very low while wearing the Freestyle Libre monitor this past week. Yesterday, we fed her Fancy Feast Middles with tuna and her blood sugar increased all day, she was having loose stools, dry heaved, was drinking and urinating more than the days before. We deduced the tuna doesn’t agree with her IBS and today her blood sugar is very low and she’s very hungry.
I’d like to try to monitor her glucose at home, but I’m overwhelmed at the moment. I’ve looked at both websites to figure out what to buy but I’m not finding the exact models named on Amazon or Walmart.
Would someone please just tell me what is the best and reasonably priced meter, test strips, lancet, and lancet pen to buy, preferably in a complete package of all that, one or two suggestions at most? Anything more than 2 suggestions will overwhelm me more. I literally just want to buy whatever is suggested to try and see if Sophia will even be amenable to me testing her.
Thank you for reading!
