Hi! I’m a cat mommy to a 14 year old Russian Blue female cat named Sophia. She was diagnosed borderline diabetic in 2021 and was started on Glipizide which worked for a time. In December 2022 she was started on Glargine insulin (1 unit 2x/day) after weight loss, excessive drinking and urination, and continued hyperglycemia. She’s now on 1.5 units 2x/day.

After not having controlled blood glucose, diarrhea to loose stool, and continued excessive thirst and drinking, I did some research and came across this site and Dr. Lisa Pierson’s site. We took Sophia off of prescription Glycobalance dry food entirely and have gone back to wet food pates at the 10% carb level and below. She seemed to improve but her blood sugar levels have dropped very low while wearing the Freestyle Libre monitor this past week. Yesterday, we fed her Fancy Feast Middles with tuna and her blood sugar increased all day, she was having loose stools, dry heaved, was drinking and urinating more than the days before. We deduced the tuna doesn’t agree with her IBS and today her blood sugar is very low and she’s very hungry.

I’d like to try to monitor her glucose at home, but I’m overwhelmed at the moment. I’ve looked at both websites to figure out what to buy but I’m not finding the exact models named on Amazon or Walmart.

Would someone please just tell me what is the best and reasonably priced meter, test strips, lancet, and lancet pen to buy, preferably in a complete package of all that, one or two suggestions at most? Anything more than 2 suggestions will overwhelm me more. I literally just want to buy whatever is suggested to try and see if Sophia will even be amenable to me testing her.

Thank you for reading!

Walmart’s ReliOn Prime. I have the older version that’s been discontinued so let me see if I can find a link. You can order it from Walmart online along with the strips and lancets.

In the Walmart app I don’t see the ReliOn Prime device. There’s only the test strips. There’s the ReliOn Premiere Classic but I was hoping for a bundle package with the test strips and lancets together. I’m getting SO confused.

Thank you!

Would this work?

Walmart’s ReliOn Prime.
Walmart stopped selling their line of Prime BG meter a year or so ago but you can still get test str4ips for the Prime. Walmarts current line is the Premier. The Classic is the least expensive @$9 while Voice, Blu and Compact are about double that. I like and use the Compact for my Snuffles since I like its smaller size. I have a Prime Classic that came with my Merle. Strips are $9 for 50 strips. You can purchase the strips and meter from Amazon but they cost significantly more than if purchased directly from Walmart.

People here like the Relion meters because the strips are the least expensive around. However, any human glucometer is fine. The pet-specific meters are expensive -- strips cost about $1 each. Buy what makes sense for you and consider that inevitably, we all run out of strips at the least convenient time! You want to be sure you either have a stockpile of strips or you can find a place to get them that's nearby.

Relion Premier Classic Meter at Walmart for 9 dollars is fine

The tests strips are 17.88 for 100

Lancets get 26 or 28 gauge lancets any brand will do
Some cotton rounds to put behind the ear so you don't poke yourself then fold it over the cats ear to stop the bleeding for about 10 seconds
I have never used a lancing device ,a lot of us freehand , I feel like you can see better where you are aiming for the sweet spot to poke
Sophia is a gorgeous kitty :cat:
