4/24 Oldtimer Skipper maybe on to something

We have kissed Fancy Feast goodbye. Skipper has eaten gourmet chicken for years; got a daily dose of Pepcid for frequent vomiting; and had BG numbers that were fairly easy to control. Although Purina says that they only changed the label and not the product, Skip's numbers became higher and harder to control. I was using the free Lantus pens and thought that perhaps they had been mishandled somewhere in transit; so I bought new cartridges from my usual supplier and that made no difference.

Three weeks ago, I stopped feeding FF and switched to By Nature Organic Chicken and Chicken Liver which, according to the label, contains primarily meat and vitamin/mineral supplements. Skip's numbers are much lower and consistent on the new diet. I also stopped the daily dose of Pepcid and there has been no vomiting!

This is not intended to be a plug for By Nature - I think any product that is primarily real meat with appropriate supplements could produce similar results.

I think more and more people are moving away from the ff which have only label changes, or so we are told. I don't bother buying much ff now, and only if the labels are the old ones and I am in a bind.
I have not tried the By Nature, but will look for some to try for Shadoe.
thx

Hi Pat and Skipper, thanks for the report! I feed FF but only the old label (I have stock piled a bunch) but was thinking of switching once it runs out because I have heard about the new labels not being good. Good to hear Skipper is doing well!!! Happy Caturday!

Hey Pat and Skipper! So good to see you guys. Great news that the food switch has helped.
I don't trust any of the cat food makers when they say they haven't changed anything -- how could that be? I would think even on a minute level the ingredients vary from one batch to the next. Regulations for pet food, well..... doesn't give me a lot of confidence. Very cool that you tried and found good results in a different food.

I'm glad you are having such success with the new food! I am going crazy trying to find food that is low carb, low phosphorus, available in Canada, and palatable to Bears. I have been using a fishy Friskies, but they have just changed their label, and I know what that means. I ran around town stocking up on the ones with the old labels. Of course the last time I stockpiled a food, he stopped eating it.

I wish I could get 2 of my cats to eat ANYTHING else.. (one cat will only exclusively eat a $1.30/3oz can low carb non-FF .. but it's breaking the bank sigh).. they don't seem to mind the new label.. but it really upsets me that the company obviously made changes, and then lied to so many people here about it.. I don't want to support them at all..

Glad things are getting easier to control for you.. awesome that the barfing stopped!

Great to hear that Skipper is doing well, and that his tummy has settled considerably.

I'm glad KB is a big boy, the FF cans would have driven us crazy so we haven't used it much.

Good morning Pat and Skipper. Glad to see that the food switch looks like part of your solution there...and I also noticed that you got a nice dose crease to boot! Very nice!

I switched to the By Nature organics for Spot also. I had no problems with the transition and Spot loves it. It has better ingredients! Only problem....the can is a tiny bit larger and in turn, Spot gained 1/2 lb. since he started to eat it, so now he is now on a "diet", lol.

this sounds like a good food for the sugar babies .. where do you purchase it at, and how does it come? 3oz cans? 5.5oz cans? Is it pricey?

Thanks for the tip, Pat! My Kitty's numbers went up with the new-label FF beef. The new label chicken doesn't raise his numbers - he just hates it! There is definitely something different with the new-label, and I hate that Purina is not telling the truth.

I've been through every other low-carb alternative there is, with no luck. So I'll look for By Nature! Do you find it in a store, or only online?

Do we know the specific carb content for this one?

NATURALLY Kitty will choose the most expensive food! But whatever makes him happy...

Answers about By Nature Organic

- Don't know the specific carb content; but it doesn't contain any high carb junk fillers.

- Availability: I am in the USA and some Petsmart stores carry it in limited quantities. I have persuaded my local Petsmart manager to order case quantities for me. PetFoodDirect has it in stock for ordering online.

- Price: Two 3oz. cans of FF cost $1.00 - 1.10. One 6oz. can of By Nature Organic costs $1.59 so I am not thrilled with the price, but having Skip feeling good is worth it. I also get the very welcome benefit of not having to clean vomit from my bed and from what is left of my oriental rug. :P

wow, and you just did a big dose reduction and it looks like it stuck! Go Skipper!

I've tried that food a couple of times. I'm impressed that it actually smells like food. Of course my one picky guy doesn't like it, but the other two cats will eat it so I use it a couple of times a week.

I just picked up a can myself....in Petsmart. I have also noticed that my two are off FF....they had liked it since August but once the change came about, they turn their noses up. I did have success with the SophicstaCat Supreme Turkey & Giblets and am now going to try the regular SohpistaCat in the larger can. I am also mixing some raw chicken mixed with Feline's Future powder and they seem to like that mixed in with canned food.
I emailed the company and am waiting to the "as fed" information on the By Nature Organic. I like that it doesn't have the flaxseed oil in it as the same brand's 95% does. Glad to hear that Skipper likes i and that he doesn't need the pepcid anymore. No more messes for Mama! :thumbup

Wow, that is awesome Pat! Many of us have had suspicions about both FF and Friskies' product changes and it seems you've confirmed some cats are having real problems with them. I also have had significant vomiting, but with Friskies. So very glad to hear she's not vomiting and her numbers are better too! Yay for happy kitty and happy mommy too!

Skipper has a discriminating palette! Stu likes the "By Nature" foods also, particularly the 95% Turkey & Turkey liver. The only flavor of By Nature Organics I have been able to find is the organic Chicken & Turkey (but he doesn't care as much for that). It is interesting to note that the 95% foods made by "By Nature" are made in Canada, so why should it be harder to find these foods there? PetSmart carries the brand, and you can also find it in many of the "upscale" pet-food stores. BTW, I not only smell the foods I feed Stu, I also taste them(!) And the By Nature foods and the EVO 95% foods both taste (and smell) like real food!!

Ella & Stu
