Yesterday's Stress-Filled Condo
First, thanks to Chris, Ruth, Elise and Ann for visiting last night's condo this morning.
Looks like we were part of a large crowd that did dosecreases this morning. It appears that Chris and Elise had more success with China and Max than we did with Cinco. It's early yet. He often takes a while to settle into a new dose. Otherwise, all is well with Cinco (anti-jinx, anti-jinx, anti-jinx).
Minka did finally eat a little Hill's a/d (I found a can in the cabinet and remembered she had eaten it before). Not a lot, but enough to help us feel a little better about things. I didn't want to break out the syringe again, since she was so opposed to it earlier.
When I got up this morning, I found little spots of liquid poo in various places on the carpet. DH told me he had cleaned up a bigger spot in the bathroom when he got up. Upon investigation, I found that Minka's tail feathers were dirty again.
What's left of them, that is, after Mark's very amateurish clipping job. I checked the blanket on the bed where she sleeps, and found that she must have thrown up a little, several times during the night! There was also poo on the comforter.
She got her usual Ondansetron/Pepcid gelcap, but didn't want any food all morning. @tiffmaxee, she gets 2 mg of Ondansetron every morning, but the Oncologist said I could go up to 4 mg if needed, so I went ahead and gave her the other half of the pill, along with some Cerenia. She still did not want anything to do with food. Any food. She clearly did not feel well. I did her fluids, hoping that would help, but no change.
Meanwhile, I went into the bedroom to get the comforter for washing, and found Sasha, who had eaten her breakfast with only a little prompting, had thrown up her food and meds all over the sheets and my pillow!
. I had to strip the bed all the way down to the mattress (luckily I use two pads, and the mattress was unscathed). The washing machine has been doing yoeman's duty all day. I am torn about the cause of her tummy upset. It's either the MaxCal that she ate last night or the new flavor/brand of food this morning - Nutro Freestyle Chicken & Herring. I tried Nutro once before and she had diarrhea, so maybe it doesn't agree with her. Harvey and Cinco ate it and seem fine. Minka, of course, didn't touch it. Minka also had the MaxCal, and I was wondering if it might be a little too rich for them, being unaccustomed to it.
Our regular vet called this afternoon to ask how Sasha's asthma was doing. When I told her she seems much better since restarting the Pred, she was not surprised. We discussed extending the length of time she's on it, then seeing how she does when she comes off. She wants me to keep her on the AB because her immune system is already compromised from the radiation and chemo, and Pred can also affect that. Since we are not having any luck with the inhaler, she discussed starting her on a bronchodilator. She said if we go that route, she'll need to come off the AB. We decided to wait to see how she does when this Pred trial ends, but she's got a script ready for me to pick up any time. I took the opportunity to discuss the tummy issues with her. She said the MaxCal and/or a/b could have caused Minka's diarrhea, and it's possible that's what caused them both to throw up, but she couldn't say for sure. I asked for her advice on what to do to help Minka, and we found that I was already doing everything she would have recommended!! Bottom line is, if she's not eating tomorrow, the vet wants to see her. So far this afternoon I've managed to get about a tablespoon of baby food into her, in several different sessions.
I'm going to have a nervous breakdown, as soon as I can find the time.
@Chris & China, the paraffin does help some, but it only seems to last a few hours. I think it would give the greatest benefit if used in the morning to alleviate stiffness. The unit came with some plastic bags to put over your hand to hold in the warmth. When I run out of those I will remember the oven mitt hint.
@Ann & Tess, the problem with SEB (other than that Minka doesn't like it) is that you can't give it within two hours of medication, as it inhibits absorption. Seems like I'm popping pills down her throat all day and it would be hard to keep that straight, even with my checklist system. I really hate to add one more thing to shove down her throat, too.
Sorry to write yet another novel, largely non-FD related. I just appreciate the support and advice I get from everyone for all my kitties and I don't think I could survive this without you. It's been a very stressful few days.
I hope you are all having a wonderful Friday.
Sending healing vines to all in need and hugs to all their beans.
Special prayers for Amy's DF, Lyresa's DF, DH and DGD, Marje's DM, Chris' DM and Elise's DM.
