Happy Wednesday! The sun is shining here and the warm weather is rolling in

Finally got a call from the vet to talk about Binx’s labs from before my trip. His thyroid values are now back to regular range (yay!) but as was possible, it’s uncovered some higher kidney values and Binx has now been placed in early Stage 3 CKD (not yay). I knew his values would likely go up, but I didn’t expect this much (labs updated in the SS).

He already gets lots of water and he’s on a lower pho diet, so I’m not really sure what other actions I should be taking. Vet mentioned Hill’s k/d diet but I’m not ready for that call, because it’s 30% carb (even the wet). I’m going to read up on more info from Tanya’s website but for now the plan is to keep him as-is and retest his values in a couple weeks (1 month after last tests) to see if his numbers are stable or increasing.

Yay for the T4, not yay for the kidneys.
Definitely join the Tanya’s group so you can get advice there.
Maybe a phosphorus binder? so you can feed what you’d like (if the vet thinks that will help based on his values).
But his phosphorus is in normal range on the spreadsheet, so I’d see what Tanya’s group says.

I’d avoid the prescription diet too if possible, Briana.

You'll learn tons from Tanya's group.
One thing I've begun doing with Jude for his UT issues is looking for what is in the food that makes it good for a cat with UT issues. One thing I learned is that UT food has dl-methionine in it, which reduces the PH level in the urine, which can, when it's high, lead to crystals. So I checked with the vet and began feeding that supplement to Jude because the UT prescription food is high in carbs.
I think the Tanya's group will have a lot of similar info about different work-arounds the carby renal food, like the phosphorous binder, lower sodium, higher quality protein (since protein can be an issue for CKD kitties).
It's such a delicate balance when they have multiple issues--you can't treat Binx's kidney disease properly by ignoring his diabetic needs!

Thanks, Staci and Mary You two read my mind! Definitely want to avoid the prescription diet right now if I can and I’m hoping to find other ways to help his kidneys, that will also allow me to continue to properly treat his diabetes. I don’t know why all these vets think it’s worth compromising the carbs simply because you can increase insulin. I don’t think getting 10+ units would feel very good for Binx and if there are balances we can find without switching the diet, I’d want to start there.

All in a days work with the multiple illnesses, as I know you’re both well aware!!

Yay for T4, nay for the kidneys.
I'm sorry. I know that's a lot to deal with on top of diabetes but you're a great mama to Binx and I'm sure you'll find the best way to tackle this as well well.
