Hi everyone!
Chloe has just finished up her 8 doses (2 shots/week) of Adequen for the loading phase… and has had 2 sessions of acupuncture. Both have really helped! She has been jumping some & more moving too… she’s certainly not running and being a kitten yet, but she’s doing way better. She was going to go to once monthly shots but the last 2 days she has been very tired again, sleeping… so we got another shot yesterday. She has weekly acupuncture right now. Her sugars have been great! All green a few blue!
I would like to get the adequen to give at home bc it’s expensive to go at the vet…but not sure how to go about that. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I give one of my kitties Adequan at home. You can buy a vial online with a doc’s script. Shots are easy to give. They worked wonders for my cat. He would need a shot every 2-3 weeks eventually. Never got to a month. But that was normal per vet. Just watch for him starting to slow down a bit and give him shot. This is of course after the introduction of it over a 1-2 month time where doses are more frequent.

@Katherine&Ruby was doing these shots at home. I’m tagging her but she hasn’t been around much lately.

thanks for the info! My understanding is that the vial is actually for horses I buy is that right… or did I make that up haha… I know the vet said it wasn’t as shelf stable as insulin unfortunately. I thought she mentioned using different needles. Chloe’s dose is 0.28 I think, does that sound right? She’s about 12.5 lbs I know they do it by weight but not sure how that equation is calculated. Thanks again for your info. can the vial be purchased from chewy or should I get from vet, is it meant to be kept it fridge?

It is Adequan Canine off label for cats. I did not refrigerate mine. I used the same vial for months. At .22 ml dosage a 5ml vial will last for 22 shots. I bought mine from Allivet but you can check around.

@jillnc1 hello! I am trying to get the adequen from my vet, but looking at ordering through a outside company of cheaper… just want to confirm…. Canine vial and it is a 5mL size? The syringes are what size? And it lasts about how long?
What is the average price of a vial I can expect?
She has been taking .28 unit every 2-3 weeks so far and acupuncture every 2 weeks. Thanks for your help.

Yes for type and size. I think I paid $60’sh at Allivet. Used same size needles I use for B12 shots 25G.

i gave my cat .22 every 4 days for a month. Then Every week for a month. Then every 2 weeks for a month. 21 days was about the most I could go without him needing another shot once he was in maintenance.

Hope this helps!

made him a new cat!

Seems like every 2 weeks is working for her right now but she just completed her loading month.
I’m not sure what size I have now… I only have insulin syringes. I think they’re 100ml ? I’m not too familiar with the all the sizes, Chloe was only on the insulin several months.
She takes a liquid vitamin now that has B12 and others in it from a holistic vet called RX Vitamins Amino B Plex but it’s a dropper not syringe.
Sorry I have so many questions. I would just like to be able to do the shot at home to save money but also so she doesn’t have to go to the vet so often.

You can do it! 1 ml with 25 gauge needle

:) thank you!
You’re so kind
I checked the syringes I had left over from her old insulin days… they are 31 G 0.3ml so will definitely have to discuss new syringes! :)
I always worry about hurting her but she is amazing… I always tell her she’s so brave and my hero! She does better than me at medical appointments hahaha
Thanks for your help! I’m going to reach out to the Dr today if I can

@jillnc1 i got Chloe the adequen set up today after her injection. I’m going to order from chewy.. I’m in the USA (Florida). I wasn’t able to find the syringes however. Anywhere you suggest to order those? It says tuberculin syringe.
I’m going to weekly shots for now. She just completed the loading phase 2-3 wk ago. Thank you very much

I looked at my insulin syringes and they seem to have ml markings too. Mine go up to .3 ml. It seems you could used those for the Adequan since you are giving .28

let me know what you think.

hmmm I’m actually not sure! Mine go to 30units u100 syringe. This says use “tuberculin syringe 1mL 25G x 5/8”
But chewy doesn’t have those

@jillnc1 yay! Finally got some syringes and the vials came. Now I’m terrified to give to her :(
Just to confirm you said you used the same vial for a few months even though it says on it to discard after 28 days/10 punctures? I mean I know I used insulin way longer than 28 days and it was fine.

Yes I did. You can double check with Vet I guess.

@jillnc1
Thanks!
I gave her first injection last night. Seemed to be fine.
I’m going to go with weekly for now. Hoping that will be a good plan after a month try every other week… like you said maybe 2-3 weeks in between. She finished her loading dose about 1 month ago.

Thanks! @jillnc1
Do you think weekly is ok or after a month off the loading dose and only having 2 shots she might need to go back to twice a week? Like you said it’s safe so I don’t think there’s an overdose haha
Thanks so much for your advice!

How is she acting? If she seems in pain I would go twice a week until she is doing better than once a week for a month.
