4/15 Brody AMBG 390 Help - need dosing advice - Newbie

Testing his blood definitely will get easier. I found it really difficult to begin with - it took me 2 days to get my first successful test. But it really does become routine after a bit though I'm sure I'm not the only person here who has accidentally blood tested themselves as well as the cat!! ;) It stings a bit - could be a whole lot worse. The fear of it is actually worse than the reality. ;)

It can be tricky to get enough blood for a reading until his ears learn to bleed. You can try doing 2 pokes right next to each other - that way you should find it easier to get a big enough blood drop for a test.

I am using a lancet without the guard but it is hard to get a good hold on him and his ear at the same time.

Edit: I used the device but without the depth guard

If we assume his pre shot was somewhere close to the +9 reading you got, that's a fairly big drop. The ideal would be that you can get another test around +4 - if you think you can do that?

Ahh - I use the lancing device. I never could get the hang of using the lancet freehand. I know quite a lot of people here do though so I'm sure someone will have some tips for you.

I could but then I will be going through another day needing a monster energy drink which I am sure are killing me also lol.

Edit: Would a +3.5 be good enough?

Yeah....but if he's still dropping, you may need to plan on setting an alarm to get another test or two in tonight

Without any data on Brody, we don't know what his cycles are going to look like and we want to make sure he's safe (as I'm sure you do too!)

I will try to test him at +4. What would the recommended course of action be based on the reading going down? I didn't get to go to walmart today to get a can of friskies but I have some dry food the vet gave me. Would that work if he got too low?

We don't intervene with high carb unless they drop below 50, so a lot will depend on how much he drops between now and then.

IF he drops below 50 and you don't have any high carb canned (Like Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers) you can add a couple of drops of Karo/honey/syrup to a little of his regular low carb food

The problem with giving dry is that it takes a long time to get into their bloodstream and a long time to get back out again

I have some Hill's science with 22% carbohydrates.

It's possible he could still drop further tonight at this point, yes. Can you set an alarm for his +6 to get another test? I do appreciate you have to sleep when you have work tomorrow but at the moment we just don't really know when his low point is so we can't really be sure whether he's done dropping yet or not.

OK...that's good...since we don't know where he started for sure, at least he's slowing down the drop since he's only dropped 25 points in the last 2 hours

I'd give him a small snack of his regular low carb food and call it a night.....IF you happen to get up in the middle of the night, or early enough before the AMPS time, that'd be great for you to get another test in if you can

If Chris says he's good, he's good - she has way more experience than I do. I very much err on the side of extreme caution!

I think since he's only dropped 25 points in 2 hours, that's a pretty gentle drop at this point in the cycle....if he'd continued to drop at the rate he had been, I'd be much more concerned...but again, since we don't have any data on Brody, any testing you can get in is good testing! :)

I will put some food but I don't have any low carb so I will mix some of the carb free food with the hills diet.

IF he should happen to be under 150 at AMPS, I'd stall, DON'T FEED and post and ask for help. Make sure your subject line says something like "STALLING, NEED HELP!" so the people scanning the forum can easily see that you're waiting for help

Just woke up and got a +11 and it was 250. I put a small amount of high carb food out last night with his zero carb food though.

Hi Michael, could you start a new condo for Brody? 4/16 Brody AMPS (and his BG#). If by chance you test and his PS has dropped and you want advice then you could instead reflect "4/16 Brody +12/# - Stalling. Advice please".

So, there's no food left right? You don't want Brody eating within 2 hours of his PS test.

Michael, the last 2 hours (before food/shot) the sugar tends to rise by itself, even without food. So if you feed him, it will rise even more. Maybe it would be good to get a timed feeder. I myself have never used one because I am able to test and feed throughout the day but a lot of people here do. If you are not home then the feeder is useful, it dispenses food at certain times of the day.

What is a condo? Update the thread title?
I there was some food left this morning.

I have to leave for work in about 24 minutes so I cna't really get a reading after I give him is injection at 7:45 Central time.

The beauty of the timed feeder is you can set it to open to an empty compartment two hours before shot time so you know for sure kitty hasn't eaten within that 2 hour window.

I mentioned the stalling issue just in case. Because of the risk of DKA, Brody will need insulin but since you have very little data on Brody who knows what his BG may do before shot time. Wanted you to be ready to get advice if you need it.

You'll be testing before you shoot, right? That's what we do to make sure we know what to do (with shot/feeding/monitoring).

I don't typically give dosing advice but because of the risk of DKA, I would say yes, shoot and leave food. Remember, if you want dosing advice, change your post subject line to get more eyes on your condo. You could created a new condo with the subject "4/16 Brody AMBG 304, DKA, Newbie - Advice Please".

Sounds good. You'll get the hang of the posting process. Ok Brody, now stay safe and eat if you need. Have a good day Michael.
