Good morning LL-

Wow, who knew this dental/lumpectomy process could be so stressful. Thanks to everyone who visited our condo yest. I really appreciate the support.

The vet sent us home w/ bupe syringes but I had no idea they intended for us to give it orally until I realized there as no needle. And they never mentioned that it needs to be absorbed in his mouth rather than shot quickly (which is what we did first). I was up at 2:00am not able to sleep so did lots of research. Talked with the vet tech today and she said we could use our insulin syringes and give Fur Ball the bupe by injection vs orally. That went soooo much better and I hope he gets more of the dose. I wish they would not presume to know what a pet owner will do. They didn't offer it as injection because "most people won't do that." That is exactly the same reason they did not encourage us to home test when he was dx'd diabetic!!!! Ugh. Vets are frustrating and it makes me even more grateful for all of you.

We got some baby food (Gerber stage 2 chicken) and he finally ate about 3 tsp this morning before his next bupe. We left him in the bathroom overnight to help contain him as he was so out of it yest. He purred when I went in to see him this morning. THAT was a welcome sound. His BG is still high for him at 145 but at least it is coming down. I had blocked his ability to get under the bed but DH didn't think he would go there and removed the boards. Yep. He hid. And then pooped. I'm just glad that is working for him. He has also peed 3 times since coming home which I'm happy about.

Used his last test strip so need to go get more. I doubt I'll ever be comfortable going long stretches of time of not testing.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday.

Re: 4/13 Fur Ball - BG145 - resting from surgery

Hi Karen, glad Fur Ball is resting omfortably. Glad you talked to them about the Bupe. I've had similar experiences with the meds and all. The syringe should make it easier and you'll know Fur Ball is getting all the meds. Sending lots of healing and restful vines for Fur Ball today and hugs and comfort vines for you.

Re: 4/13 Fur Ball - BG145 - resting from surgery

I'm glad you got things straightened out with your vet. FWIW, when Gabby was first diagnosed, the vets assumed I knew how to give an injection. I was so stressed due to how sick Gabby was at the time that I didn't even think to ask. I came home with a prescription for insulin and syringes and no one thought to show me how to give an injection. Thank goodness for YouTube! I learned how to home test the same way because no one even bothered to mention home testing!!

Just an FYI in response to a couple of posts in your condo yesterday (and this is mostly for anyone reading FB's condo today). The same bupe can be given either orally or by injection. It's not two different medications. (Some drugs have different concentrations for oral and injection type administration but bupe isn't one of them.)

Re: 4/13 Fur Ball - BG145 - resting from surgery

Thanks Sienne-
You are correct. That's why I called the vet back today and she clarified that the bupe they sent home with us in the oral syringe could be transferred to a needle. I just think it is so much nicer on his mouth to not have yet another medication orally.
We are giving him the Clindamycin orally because of the sugar in the liquid and our vet did not want to give it via injection due to the irritation at the injection site. He's been decent w/ the pill so we consented to that.

Paws crossed for Fur Ball to have a speedy recovery.
Two surgeries lumped into one seem to always be stressful but so is two separate surgeries with additional anesthesia...

Appy vines and healing vines and a good day wishes for you and Fur Ball. cat_pet_icon

Hi Karen,

We are so glad that Fur Ball had successful surgeries and are sending healing vines for a speedy recovery. Interesting about Bupe being injectable as well as absorbable. One of the great things about this Forum is that you learn something new every day.

Wishing you and Fur Ball a restful day,

Ella & Rusty

I'm glad Fur Ball's recovery is progressing. Sending more vines for him and you. I think medical people know this stuff so well they forget that the patients don't and they can't remember what it's like to be a novice. Thank you, Sienne, for that info on the bupe. It is amazing how much we learn here. :-D

Nancy --

Just an FYI for future reference: Most meds can be compounded by a compounding pharmacy. For example, if it was uncomfortable for FB to take a pill, the clindamycin could be compounded into a sugar free liquid. There are some meds that are available in capsules (especially if the pill tastes horrible), transdermal gel, or in a variety of flavored liquids with or without sugar. Most vets don't mention it because there's an extra cost involved. The cost, however is not prohibitively more.

Re: 4/13 Fur Ball - BG145 - resting from surgery

I'm glad Fur Ball is doing better today. That's great he gave you those purrs. The first time I was given Bupe, no one told me it needs to go in the side of the mouth and not be swallowed. I'm glad you are able to inject the Bupe for Fur Ball. Sending prayers for healing and peace of mind for you.

Re: 4/13 Fur Ball - BG145 - resting from surgery

Hi Karen, I'm so glad to hear that Fur Ball is purring at you. I'm glad all the lb action is working...sorry about the placement. I hope he gets better and better and better quickly. Then you'll be able to relax a little more. Big hugs to you all.

Re: 4/13 Fur Ball - BG145 - resting from surgery

BG tonight is still at 153. Sure wish it were lower but I'm hoping its just stress. He ate 1.5 ounces for dinner tonight and took the clindimyacin. The bupe injection seems to be lasting longer.

Rhiannon - Yes, we debated long and hard about doing all of this to him at one time. But 2 anesthesias within a short time did not seem safe. We are just praying she got all the cancer and the teeth pulling was not in vain.

Ella- That's for sure. I've learned more here than I ever could have imagined. Give Rusty some lovins from us.

Liz -You are so right. They do this in their sleep and I think get too busy with everything else to really explain things. I'm so glad we are giving him the bupe sub-q. Seems more effective and just one less thing we have to do with his mouth.

Carla - Purrs are nice. He's definitely not himself yet. But hopefully on the mend. Thanks for stopping by and for the prayers and peace.

Mary - Hugs are always welcome. I'll stop by and check on Ollie tonight as well.

Wishing everyone a good night.
Karen
