Hi Everyone,

I've been missing for days. First, we had house guests and I didn't have a minute, it seemed, to get here except maybe to read a message or two. Then, I got sick. Yikes! Nearly 102 temperature, world-class body aches and food seemed like some sort of alien idea. But I am doing better today.

Meanwhile, we have been keeping an eye on Basil. Although I have not been in the picture much since I got sick.

Basil finished his Clavamox on Thursday. He was acting the way he does when his stomach is bothering him. But, we actually saw him vomit out in the fenced yard on Wednesday and heard him in the house twice yesterday morning (during the wee hours). I imagine he is also vomiting outside at times when we don't see. This has happened before with antibiotics and has taken about ten days to clear up. We have been giving him yogurt but someone will be going out to get another probiotic today.

WCR: He is perky and playful and affectionate. Takes many long, preening baths in the sun. His only stress (now that the guests are gone) seems to center around his not being able, during the daytime, to go outside beyond the fenced yard. He is allowed to do that ordinarily, but the vet trimmed his claws and we have been worried about letting him out. We just gave in and let him out after some sustained piteous looks.

Within 24 hours of ending the Clavamox, he seemed to get all his old energy back. BUT, you can see that his BG seems to be rising and now we have this nasty 155. That was 2hr20min after eating.

I don't believe he has any sort of infection. He lets you poke at his mouth, he seems totally happy and normal. I just think he is in that after-Clavamox zone. Could the vomiting be the cause of this? What do we need to do? Curves? Watch & wait? Are we already in the Lantus zone?

Thanks for all advice!

Re: 4/11 Basil AMBG 130 +6.5 155! Uh oh!

(((Lydia & Basil))) ;-) Good to "see" you.. but not under these circumstances! No advice from me.. but wishing you luck & cheering you both on. Let's see what the other say.. Happy to hear you are feeling better too!

Re: 4/11 Basil AMBG 130 +6.5 155! Uh oh!

ugh. the numbers aren't awful, but there's definitely an upwards trend.
i can't remember if it was you who i asked if post dental x-rays were done to make sure they got everything out? vomiting also concerns me although this could be as simple as a hairball. in any case, i think i'd have him checked out. if something is going on, it's better to catch it right away... and that also goes for restarting insulin if necessary.

Re: 4/11 Basil AMBG 130 +6.5 155! Uh oh!

Yes, Jill. You did ask about x-rays, and none were listed on the bill. So I have to assume none were taken, although the vet described the extractions as clean and simple.

Basil vomits at the drop of a hat and always has, so personally, at this point, I am not too concerned that it is occurring. I expect it every time we give antibiotics, and I WISH I hadn't listened to my vet who said not to do the probiotics unless it became necessary. Well, now the husband is on his way out to get them. I would be concerned if it is potentially causing a serious problem or looked like the side effect of a serious problem.

Since he has done this several times before on AB, do you think it would do any harm to give him a couple more days on the probiotic to try to get regulated post Clavamox? I know that taking him to the vet would probably make him more upset right now than anything. My mind is open and I'm listening. But he looks so darn good the last day and a half.

Re: 4/11 Basil AMBG 130 +6.5 155! Uh oh!

he's creeping up, isn't he? Bloodwork and an x-ray (because of the vomiting) wouldn't be a bad idea.

wish i could help, but i really have no way of knowing if holding off on a vet visit would do any harm. a vet would have to make that determination...

Re: 4/11 Basil AMBG=130 +6.5=155! + 8=94Uh oh!

Hi,

Pre mini-meal BG=94.

He ate his whole min (half can FF).

Thanks, everyone, and I apologize for putting anyone on the spot by asking for medical advice. I realize you can't give that!> I guess what I was trying to say in my own inarticulate way was that pre FD, I would have looked at this vomiting and known we had to wait it out. It's why I always cringe when the vet says antibiotics.

Re: 4/11 Basil AMBG=130 +6.5=155! + 8=94 +9=100

Sweet basil gave me a 100 at +9, which is +1 from a half can of food. AND I took his temperature, which he was gracious enough to allow. I quit when the thermometer (digital) reached 98.9 because at the rate it was going up, if I waited the full 2 minutes, I couldn't have gotten over 99.6 or something and I didn't want to use up my good luck with Basil and me doing a pokus up his tuchus.

Well, I like this trend. And his appetite is improving. Don't know if that's him or if it is us doing a "better job" of rotating flavors.

We started the probiotic tonight, too.

I think we will call the vet if we get a high AM# tomorrow and ask what he thinks about bringing him in. Otherwise, we may just test tomorrow and see where we are. He gets SO flipped out about going to the vet.

Well, it sounds as if you will take him if his numbers are high tomorrow or if there are other symptoms, right? I hope it's just a hangover from the ABs...hate them too...let us know how he is tomorrow. It's good that you got some lower readings. But I do agree that the vet is the place to be if symptoms persist....
Hoping that Basil feels better soon. HUGS!
