Good morning!

Yesterday's condo

Yesterday
AMPS=207 (s1u); +1=234; +2=211; +9.75=178
PMPS=191 (s1u); +2.25=212; +5=220

Today
AMPS=191 (s1u); +1=214; +2=211; +7.5=193
PMPS=227 (s1u); +1=225; +2.5=209

Lucy is still mostly in yellow since the new cartridge yesterday morning, but at least I'm seeing some blue numbers.
Hopefully her number will improve soon.

Lucy's appy is decent this morning. :-D

Things I've been thinking about beside higher BG:
- Why Lucy's phosphorus level is low? She was at the lowest end of the reference range at the last b/w.
I know it's a good thing, but aren't CKD cats supposed to have a high phosphorus level?
Is it still better to feed her low phosphorus food?
- If she has a kidney infection, but not lower urinary tract infection, can urine culture detect?
If not how do they diagnose kidney infection for sure?
- Why Lucy's WBC has been so high? Maybe there's something other than pancreatitis and IBD? She's had pancreatitis and IBD for years.
It's since last year the WBC has always been high. Why?
- I'm worried about Ginger's high blood pressure, but checking at the vet doesn't do justice because she's so scared at the vet.
Should I buy a sphygmomanometer? Can I afford some type of blood monitoring machine? Maybe an infant cuff?

I'm seeing the vet on Sunday, so I'll ask her some of these questions, but I'm also trying to find some answers online.
It's making me @-) @-) @-) @-) @-)

I hope everyone's having a nice day!

Re: 3/28 Lucy AMPS=191

I'm glad Lucy is feeling good today!!! I don't know the answers to most of your Qs (sorry!), but for Ginger's high BP...just in my bit of experience with both Mario (GA) and Trix, and how my vet deals with it: they use 160 as their cut off and in my vet's opinion, that does account for white coat syndrome. Anything above that, they begin treatment.

I've also heard that, at least with current technology, it is very difficult to accurately check a cat's BP at home. The technology just isn't there from what I understand, but someone else may have heard differently. If so, I'd love to know, too! My vet charged $59 for each BP check...if I could do some degree of monitoring at home, it would be awesome!

Have a great day, Mariko!

Re: 3/28 Lucy AMPS=191

Hi Mariko.

Sorry to hear all those questions are making you :dizcat ! I'm glad you have a list to take to the vet. I always forget something without a list.

When Cinco's vet checked his BP, they kept him for half a day, in a dark, quiet room so he could relax, and after an hour or two he was calm and they felt they got an accurate reading (it was good). Has your vet tried that? You could take a blanket or cushion and toy that Lucy is fond of to comfort her and help her relax.

Good luck getting your answers!

Re: 3/28 Lucy AMPS=191

Hi Mariko! I make a list for vet appts too, I get so flustered with Chyna so upset that I have to or I forget :? . I hope that someone on here can help you with your questions, they are good ones and I wish I could help. But I can send sliding vines to Lucy, and say that I am glad how well she is eating today  .

I'd like to have Chynas BP done, I didn't realize I should be asking for it...I wish I could check her stuff at home...so I'll be looking to see if anyone gives you suggestions ;-) . I hope you have a good day, TGIF!

I'm glad Lucy is eating for you today and she's giving you some blue. I don't know the answers to your questions, but I'm sure someone knowledgeable will be along soon. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 3/28 Lucy AMPS=191;+2=211;+7.5=193

I too hate going into vetty with so many questions going on. I always seem to forget asking one of them.

You should search FDMB for answers on kidney infections - here's a post from Marje on Champ's condo a while ago.

I remember someone else asking about taking BP at home. And I seem to remember the answer is to see if a tech or traveling vet will do it at home, otherwise you have to do it in office.

- If she has a kidney infection, but not lower urinary tract infection, can urine culture detect?

I get kidney infections a lot... but I am completely unsure if it works the same for cats. I would assume a urinalysis would show that she has an infection if she has an infection in her kidneys.. Usually if kidneys are infected, the infection is also in the bladder and urinary tract.

"Why Lucy's WBC has been so high? Maybe there's something other than pancreatitis and IBD? She's had pancreatitis and IBD for years.
It's since last year the WBC has always been high. Why?"
Any kind of infection at all, even a very minor one...can cause the higher WBC. If you think she may have a kidney infection...that could definitely be the cause of the high WBC. (I know for people... a very minor infection can cause a high WBC without any signs of an infection....until the infection gets worse. I dont know if this is the same in cats) I would discuss with your vet if it could be the pancreatitis or IBD causing this. If they dont think so, ask them about any other possible infections?

"I'm worried about Ginger's high blood pressure, but checking at the vet doesn't do justice because she's so scared at the vet."
- I am sorry I dont know anything about this. I will keep Ginger in my thoughts and prayers and hope blood pressure improves.

I am sorry I cant be of more help with your questions, but if I am feeling okay tomorrow(I actually have myself a kidney infection right now), I can try to help you research this stuff online.

My thoughts and prayers are always with you Mariko and Lucy!!!

Hope you have a good evening

Great questions Mariko ~ I would love to be able to take Cleo's BP at home. She is so super stressed at the vets. I ask the vet to listen to her heart murmur first, and take BP next. It seems that the longer she is there, the worse the readings are. Her heart murmur can go from a grade 1 (if listened to when we first get there) to a grade 3, if checked after examination, blood draw, etc.

Hope you get some answers!
Sending good appy vines to Miss Lucy!

Re: 3/28 Lucy PMPS=227 // poor appy

Thank you, everyone, for your help with my never-ending questions.

Lucy's appy was not great this morning, and is worse this evening.
She did eat some, a little less than half.
She didn't want any more Wellness Turkey, 3oz or 5.5oz, so I'll try Wellness Chicken in a bit.
She doesn't appear to be painful or nauseated.
She purrs when brushed with her favorite ZoomGroom.

Mariko

I'm sorry Lucy isn't eating well tonight. Poor sweetie. Sending her good appy vines.

- Why Lucy's phosphorus level is low? She was at the lowest end of the reference range at the last b/w.
It is interesting that Lucy's P levels are at low normal because with most CKD cats, it's a fight to keep it down. Usually low P indicates the P is being moved from the extra cellular fluid around the cells into the cell. There can be a variety of reasons. I would definitely discuss this with your vet. She is still in the normal range so I don't think it is considered hypophosphatemia. But it will ease your mind to ask. CKD cats are not "suppose" to have high P levels but generally do. I would also ask the vet what approach she wants you to take regarding low P foods.
- If she has a kidney infection, but not lower urinary tract infection, can urine culture detect?
If not how do they diagnose kidney infection for sure?
Typically, bacteria is not seen in a urine culture if there is kidney infection. The best way to determine is via u/s of the kidneys.

- Why Lucy's WBC has been so high? Maybe there's something other than pancreatitis and IBD? She's had pancreatitis and IBD for years.
It's since last year the WBC has always been high. Why?

One would think there is some infection somewhere. I think this is also an important question for your vet.

My vet is of the same ilk as Amy's. Anything over 160 takes into account white coat syndrome. When Teddi needed her BP checked, I had a mobile vet come to the house and do it. If you can't do that, I would take her in, sit quietly with her in a semi-dark room for 15 minutes and then let them try. You can't use a sphygmomanometer on a cat. It's done by Doppler and it's usually a two person job even with a calm cat. I suppose someone really, really good could do it alone but it just seems to help to have two people. I think they run over $600 US.

I hope that helps a little....

Thank you, Marje.

Just by luck, I had an opportunity to get a second opinion on Lucy's recent & past b/w from a vet who works with a prescription petfood company called Rayne.
I originally contacted them about custom-made food, and because they are a prescription petfood company, they don't talk to me, but they talk to my vet.
My vet and the Rayne's vet have been communicating, and discussed about Lucy's lab results.
And the funny coincidence is that they were classmate at the vet school.

Anyway, I think the Rayne's vet did suggest that I feed high protein and low phosphorus food to Lucy, even after looking at her phosphorus value.
Since I didn't talk with the Rayne's vet directly, I don't know what exactly her recommendations were.
I'll talk to my vet about this more.

It was also this vet who suggested that I do urine culture, by the way.
It's funny, it was totally a coincidence that they were discussing Lucy when she was getting her b/w done last weekend.
I always think this kind of coincidence is suggestive of something important......
