Hi Everyone,
We are back from the appointment with the IM vet in Vermont and Rusty has all his fur. Based on her thorough examination, on his records, and on his recent labs the vet didn't see an urgent reason to have an ultrasound at this point. We were overjoyed to hear this!
The vet thinks that Rusty's breathing, airways, congestion, etc., sound OK. His weight loss (which she said was mostly muscle loss, not fat) may be age-related. He could be persuaded to eat more. The higher GGT is probably related to low-level, chronic pancreatitis. She was not thrilled with his low bg numbers. She thinks a diabetic cat's numbers should be between 90 and 250(!) and recommended I take his dose down a quarter unit: to .5 Units. She thinks he should consistently eat just one food (DM!!) and that serving a variety of foods causes too many ups and downs in bgs because the different foods all have different percentages of carbs, even though they may all be low carb. She recommends using flea and tick control all year, not just in the warmer months. Ticks and fleas can carry all sorts of things that cause problems in cats (indoors and out).
Rusty had the blood tests for Cobalamin (Vit. B-12) and Folate. He also had the IDEXX Spec fPL. These tests were sent out to the lab. He had a radiograph with 3 thoracic views. The radiology department's interpretation and the lab results will be sent to me and to Rusty's regular vet next week.
All in all I was pleased that we went today. We almost didn't get there: when I went out to the garage to get the car I slipped on the ice, fell backwards, and landed hard on my head and my right upper leg (hamstring/glut). My whole body felt paralised and tingly for a second. Then I got a visual migraine. Edward wanted me to go to the ER, but I didn't want to, so I sat down for a half hour, put ice on my head (and we left for Vermont). I was OK, but glad to get home this afternoon to put Arnica gel on my leg and more ice on my head (the bumps are almost gone, but it feels bruised).
So that's the story of our day.
Rusty thanks you all for your good thoughts. He's sleeping in his little bed. He was interested in the car trip, especially the ferry ride.
