Hi Everyone,

We are back from the appointment with the IM vet in Vermont and Rusty has all his fur. Based on her thorough examination, on his records, and on his recent labs the vet didn't see an urgent reason to have an ultrasound at this point. We were overjoyed to hear this!
The vet thinks that Rusty's breathing, airways, congestion, etc., sound OK. His weight loss (which she said was mostly muscle loss, not fat) may be age-related. He could be persuaded to eat more. The higher GGT is probably related to low-level, chronic pancreatitis. She was not thrilled with his low bg numbers. She thinks a diabetic cat's numbers should be between 90 and 250(!) and recommended I take his dose down a quarter unit: to .5 Units. She thinks he should consistently eat just one food (DM!!) and that serving a variety of foods causes too many ups and downs in bgs because the different foods all have different percentages of carbs, even though they may all be low carb. She recommends using flea and tick control all year, not just in the warmer months. Ticks and fleas can carry all sorts of things that cause problems in cats (indoors and out).
Rusty had the blood tests for Cobalamin (Vit. B-12) and Folate. He also had the IDEXX Spec fPL. These tests were sent out to the lab. He had a radiograph with 3 thoracic views. The radiology department's interpretation and the lab results will be sent to me and to Rusty's regular vet next week.

All in all I was pleased that we went today. We almost didn't get there: when I went out to the garage to get the car I slipped on the ice, fell backwards, and landed hard on my head and my right upper leg (hamstring/glut). My whole body felt paralised and tingly for a second. Then I got a visual migraine. Edward wanted me to go to the ER, but I didn't want to, so I sat down for a half hour, put ice on my head (and we left for Vermont). I was OK, but glad to get home this afternoon to put Arnica gel on my leg and more ice on my head (the bumps are almost gone, but it feels bruised).

So that's the story of our day.

Rusty thanks you all for your good thoughts. He's sleeping in his little bed. He was interested in the car trip, especially the ferry ride.

Interesting visit. I'm glad to hear vetty didn't think he needed an ultrasound and he got to keep his hair. :) Doh! on the BG's and DM. Like the rest of us I'm sure you are good an nodding and smiling at that.

Ouch on the fall - that's sound pretty serious! Tons of healing vines going your way. Was that the same hamstring that's been bothering you?

I'm glad the vetty visit went well and Rusty didn't have to have his belly shaved. I hope you get good test results back.

Ouch on your fall. I hope you're feeling better soon.

Yay for no bare belly! I'm glad the visit was mostly positive. I'm sure you practised the standard head bob and tongue biting while the IM spouted her nonsense about FD. My vet says the same thing about flea and tick control.

I'm sorry about your fall. Be sure to have Edward check your pupils periodically tonight to make sure they are even. Hitting your head can be so serious.

Sending good vines for the rest of Rusty's test results, and healing vines for your owies.

ooh Rusty, no shaved belly, you's can be in club anyway....
mine's growing back fast.... Shadow

oh my on that fall....
hope you rest easy....

if you can't stay awake tho', go to the dr.

I'm glad the vet visit went pretty well, and I am hoping all the pending test results come back well.

Your story reminds me of what I told my doctor last Saturday. I told her how I slipped on the ice last January and hit my back and arm (elbow) and head. And she asked why I didn't go to the ER, and I said I was getting the car ready to go to a vet appointment. And she understood, because she's a cat person.

Sending quick recovery vines to you.

Ouch on your slip and fall! I'm sorry your trip started off like that.
It sounds like the vet thinks that he is in good shape overall! I wish we could have had a peek inside, but it's best for him that he came home with his glorious fur intact.
It will be interesting to hear about the spec fPl, the B12/folate and the thoracic radiographs. Interesting on the flea and tick products.
I hope that all of you recover quickly from your strenuous day!

Yikes on that nasty fall. I hope you are okay!

Sounds like a good vet visit. Maybe she was thinking of Alpha Trak numbers? That would make sense.

Oh my goodness on your fall! I would guess you have a concussion based on your symptoms and if you have any more tingly feelings get yourself to the people vetty! I prescribe wearing yak trax or microspikes anywhere where there is ice and consider wearing a bike helmet all winter (unless inside of course).:joyful:

Glad Rusty's visit went well, sounds like you got some thorough and practical advice, although maybe a little puzzling on the BGs and fuds, but then that isn't unexpected I reckon. Paws crossed for the waiting for results period. I bet Rusty loved being on the big lagoon and took his lagoon meister duties seriously on the ferry crossing!

Oh my!! That fall sounds pretty bad! I'd have Edward check on you overnight...just enough to make sure you rouse easily. After any head injury, that's important to do for the first 24 hours if you're sleeping. If he can't wake you up fairly easily, he needs to pack you up and take you to the ER!

Rusty needs her mamabean around to worry about her!!

How well we know the BG and DM speech!! Just smile and nod!

HI Ella :):coffee:

WOW, what a day for you! I am sorry you got the BG and fuds speech... I alwyas just nod and say ok, sure. :rolleyes:AT least out IM vet didn't go down that road... I am glad that Rusty had a good appt, and not shaved belly! It is good to know that she feels all is well. I too think it will be interesting to see what the labs etc. show. Rest well tonight Rusty, you deserve it!

I a so sorry about your fall. I too would have Edward check on you, to to be sure all is well, while you sleep etc. I had a trail trip slip and fall that Sunday, so I can relate to how that can feel. I landed on my upper arm and shoulder. OUCH! It felt rather tingly too.... I love the arnica gel, that stuff works great! I hop your recovery is speedy. Take care, 'K?

YAY for good blood work! :joyful: BOO for poopy advice from betty regarding BG and fuds. o_O And OUCHY on your fall. :( Sending feel better vines to you, Ella.

Yikes on the fall Ella--healing vines for the soreness you might feel tomorrow- I hope you have a more restful day tomorrow!

Sounds like a good IM visit- we will wait anxiously for the test results-glad they did the spec fpl, so many vets do the snap which I hear is not as good.

Rusty- Nice work gettin' out of the belly shave-you one smart kitty! Tiger:cat:

Mumbeans sending me with the cottonwool to wrap you in Auntie Ella and she showed me how to check your pupils too. I'll have de flying kangaroos on standby to get you to the vetty if deys not right. Dr Vyktor is on de way...

Rusty - if there's not enough cottonwool we may need to shave your belly after all!

You are a worry Ella, Hopefully you've bounced ok and there's no third fall lurking in your future!

Yikes on that fall....I hope you heal up quickly. I'm glad all went well at the IM. I think these days we're all prepared for "THE" FD talk! It's good thing WE hold the syringe!

Ella! Gosh, here we are flinging our vines Rusty's way when we should have aimed a few at you! Nasty fall. Ouch. Speedy, not too throbbing, recovery.

As for you Mister Rusty. Good job! Look at all that fluffy belly fur still nicely in place. Hooray. Waiting with you all for the test results and sending vines for excellent news there. In the meantime, keep an eye on your bean.
