Hello everyone,
Here is Simon's yesterday.

We went to the vet this morning for a follow up visit (he was due for a shot also). The vet is pleased with his progress and seems to think Simon ought to try to go OTJ. I don't think he's there quite yet! Vet continues to think the 60s are too low for Simon (I tried to explain how the human meter runs lower to no avail; I told him my civvie has been in the 60s when I test her). I think a light went on then and he said "maybe you should come compare your meter with my equipment on the same sample." I think vet is very competent and has given us good care with all of our pets, but I think that perhaps my time in LL has educated me beyond where he is comfortable   But you know how stating that you heard something on a message board goes over! I may have to dig up my journal articles. I feel that I will have better results if I keep being pleasant as I try to share my info.

Vet really wanted a fructosamine so I finally consented because it sounded like he wasn't really eager to write a new Lantus Rx without it. Does this test show us anything that we don't already know from my SS? I understand it gives an average, which my meter can do already. Can anyone tell me about fructosamine values and what we are wanting to see so we can be prepared?

He kept calling the values in the 60s "profound hypoglycemia."

One other question: Does Simon's SS show any signs of our vial of Lantus pooping out? I'm not sure what typically happens and how one can tell. I do think he is needing more insulin and his values aren't changing much. His vial was opened 1/5/12. I have handled it well but not perfectly. I'd give myself a B+. It's been on the counter for an hour here and there when I got distracted.

I have refills on the vial so at the worst I can transfer that Rx to Sam's or Costco and just get a new vial. I would prefer the pens in case we're at this for awhile! Still haven't found a Dallas pharmacy to sell me one pen when and if I get an Rx.

Re: 3/23 Kim's Simon AMPS 122 +2/67 +3/72 +7/80 vet visit

Hi guys .. I don't have much time to respond to this but just had to write that my vet also thinks mocha's numbers are "unusually low" and has even set out her SS to other vet's at other practices .. and even to a few colleagues at Michigan State University .. I just smile and nod at this point .. what can we do you know?

He thinks the OTJ values are low? Like his values now that he's not even getting insulin?

I kept trying to explain that 62 can't be hypo if my non diabetic cat has that value

I would think Simon would come out around 200 on that fructosamine. My meter does an average and it's in the 90s. Will vet freak out if it's lower than 250?
It sounds like that is the range minimum as I'm looking around.
Gah!

He is supposed to call tomorrow with results.

Any thoughts on the age or potency of my Lantus vial?

Chuck out the vial, I have never had a vial or pen any longer than 40 days, so it is likely your lantus has had it's day...Just be sure to monitor a lot when you start a new vial, as it will be potent..
Next time you go to vet bring copy of his SS and the Rand article on lantus from Queensland Univ. That worked on my vet..she was amazed by it..It is surprising the amount the vets do not know about FD!

BTW Thanks for the wine & Nanner thingy   I'm switching to vodka & watermelon
Huggies & Lubs from us!

I have been looking at Canada drugs online. I actually "chatted" them to see if they could transfer my refills to them. They said it depends on the US pharmacy's policies. But I can't change to Solostar without having vet re-write. Funny thing is I have an aunt and uncle who are both TX vets, but they aren't treating Simon so I don't want to put them in the position to write the Rx!

Why not ask your relatives for an Rx? Especially since all you want to do is switch from the vial to the pens? It's the same insulin.
Alternatively, why not ask your vet for a prescription for the pens? Tell him that they are much more cost-effective. Then you can order from Canada without having to try to "convert" your refills from your pharmacy. And you will still have your refills at your pharmacy in case of an emergency.

Good luck!!

Ella

I think I will find out tomorrow how it's going to go! I was getting a feeling like the vet thinks Simon is going too low and doesn't want to Rx more insulin. I think it probably won't play out like that, and if I want it he will probably write for it. But I tried to get him to write it while I was there and he said he wanted to wait for the fructosamine.

As for relatives, I just hate to put them in that position. Sometimes friends will ask me to call in meds that aren't for conditions I have treated or when they're not my patients of record. I just try not to do it in case there were to be a bad outcome. Hate to make someone else liable when they've never seen the patient.

Look for a Veterinary Compounding Pharmacy in your area. These types of pharmacies specialize in not only compounding medications for animals but also selling medications in smaller amounts for animal use. I Google'd "veterinary pharmacy, Dallas" and came up with several but don't know which ones would be nearest to you.

I use a veterinary compounding pharmacy for Cini Mini and that's how we go the Solostar pen, and they sold them on a single vial basis too.

Not that I am advocating it, but my vial of insulin that I had before the pen was 7 months old when I switched. My Vet said she wouldn't feel comfortable having a vial around for more than 5 months, even under the best conditions.

I also showed my Vet the Roomp-Rand article and she thought it was a good step in the right direction, but because Cini has been on insulin for 3 years now she didn't think he would be a good candidate to ever be OTJ. :YMSIGH:

That article has gotten my vets to listen to me-I agree about showing it to yours.
I have an online pharm. that I just got 5 pens for about $105 for 5--
Send me a PM & I will give it to you if you like...Your insulin may not be totally pooped out yet, but me, I like fresh...I really have never had one longer than 40 days, but I am not saying it's impossible--
Have a great Ni Ni!--Gee I forgot the Roomp In the Rand article-    my bad!

Great numbers for Simon! I'm glad you like your vet...sounds like he just needs a little extra convincing that Simons numbers are safe.

I do think it's kind of like blackmail to make you pay for a fruc test to get a prescription, I can't understand why he thinks a fruc test would tell him more than your SS. :YMSIGH: :YMSIGH:
