I feel like I have cleaned all the things this afternoon.

Yesterday's condo

So, not a lot going on today. Cain's back at the vet getting more IV fluids with potassium and B complex. He got another B12 shot (which can be done only every three days), ampicillin and the usual cerenia and famotidine.

He started his lactulose yesterday and...well let's just say I had to wash a lot of towels. Repeatedly. A lot. He pooped a lot with that lactulose, but it's a laxative so not surprising. I woke up this morning and had some of the floor to clean before I took him to the vet. Today I have pee pads now so hopefully less of the house towels will be involved.

I took the labs over to the second vet and asked a question. She called back saying the only way I can know for certain if it's not hepatic lipidosis and instead a blocked bile duct is to have an ultrasound. Which was the option when Cain got his feeding tube in. The surgery and the ultrasound are the same exact price. The feeding tube was needed more so we went with that, as y'all know. Luckily I got the blood tests done at my vet so the surgery was lower but there's no lowering the cost of the ultrasound. At least that's what I remember of the conversation. I had nothing to take notes with cause I left my notebook by accident at the vet's office. She also recommends a blood transfusion. (Not cheap of course. ) Which I'm asking my vet now if he can do that or if I have to have her do it. And we need a PCR test done on the blood. Though my biggest question is would I have to do more than one transfusion? Definitely going to be asking that.

I think I might be arranging to take Cain over to the second vet tomorrow morning for some questions to be answered. And I want her to check if the feeding tube is doing well. I don't know. I'll update here and in the pancreatits group.

I think I have enough time to update the other group and then I need to go pick up Cain.

Re: 3/20 Cain AMPS 243

Oh I know Sienne recommended the blood transfusion as well. I'm just reporting that one of the two vets agree with ya. :)

Not really any improvements. Other than Cain sitting his front half on the scratcher, with his back legs splayed out and more poop for me to take care of, he was pretty still in the carrier. He meowed at me once before I put him in the car but nothing after that. No responses again to the shots.

I found out when I came to pick him up, the vet said he crashed some. Apparently the vet tech saw Cain with his head between his front paws and his entire towel was soaked with urine (or nearly all of it). He wasn't responding to them. The vet gave him some dex sodium phosphate (that's what he said, I asked a few times) to help revive him and Cain was sleepy alert when I came in. He meowed at me when he smelled me I think. Just once though. And he meowed once in the carrier. He looked like he was trembling a bit. He wasn't purring that I could tell. And he was twitching his whiskers every so often. He was given a shot of butorphenal and and his usual evening ones of cerenia and whatnot. I'm still giving him his lactulose and the 2mg of ondansetron three times daily. (Though trying to get that medication in food to suck into a syringe has been tricky.)

I'm going to see how he does tonight. He's going to go into the second vet for her opinion tomorrow morning first thing (unless something happens tonight). And I'll let y'all know. :-|

edit: and now I need to keep Brownie from getting into the roast beef of my sandwich. Silly cat.

Jennifer, ask your vet--& the groups--about dissolving his meds in a tiny bit of water and then squirting that to him via his tube, or mixing that w/his tube food. I know some meds you are not supposed to dissolve, I don't remember which ones, but I did this w/some of Tawny's meds, much easier, I don't remember mixing any meds w/her food, I do remember liquidating them in just a tiny bit of water, like about .3-.5ml of water.

Oh that might work. I've been crushing them up and then putting it on the top of the food I'm about to syringe in and I'm trying to get all the medication pieces in without much air gaps. Liquifying it might work better.

I am glad I bought those pee pads today. I already threw one away. So far he's urinated twice since I brought him home but no poop. Then again after yesterday, might not be enough in him to poop. He didn't want to move out of his carrier half shell till I picked him up to check on his towel. I put him on the pads after I saw he urinated into his towel. He's shifted around once or twice so far.

(((((Jennifer))))), We so want Cain to show some improvement this evening. You are working so hard. I do hope that your vets will be able to address some of the questions that the Pancreatitis group is bringing up (I belong to this group, too, and have been following the comments).
Love on your boy and tell him how strong he is and how much you want him to get better. We are all thinking of you and dear Cain.

Hugs and scritches,

Sending more prayers for Cain. Just checking on the ondansetron dose. It should be 1/4 of a 4 mg tablet every 12 hours.

Regarding the ultrasound, can you find out how much it is, please, and let me know?

I'm wondering if you should ask the vet that DOES think a transfusion will help to talk to the vet that doesn't. They should be talking to each other.

I hope there is some progress tomorrow.

PMPS 462

BG is jumping all over. But with the extra steroids that's expected I guess. I double checked that PMPS twice. I should have double checked the AM +4 number. So far he's urinated four times. Whoever invented those pads needs to be given cookies. I know Cain went when he's trying to shift off of it. I think he might have been purring a little when I was cleaning his belly with a wet washcloth.

Marje, Oh it's supposed to be tinier? I was prescribed 1/2 of a 4mg pill. At least that's what he was saying. I just quarter the 8mg ones that was sent to me. Though it's a guess how much I actually get into the food to give to him. I'll try to break the next pill smaller. I'm not sure if she thinks it will work, she's recommending that he needs one. (Darn myself for leaving that notepad at the vet office when the receptionist called.) I'm taking Cain to her tomorrow morning to see what she thinks. Hopefully good news. I will send you a message.

Thank you Ella. I swear I need to print what they're asking out but no easy access to a printer. I feel so dumb half the time with this and then trying to remember (even while referencing my notebook) all that's happening. The notepad is the only thing keeping me from forgetting stuff but mostly. I still forget to ask things even if it's in front of my face.

The normal pills are 4 mg so 1/4 would be 1 mg twice a day. So if you are POSITIVE the pills are 8 mg, then you'd give 1/8th of a pill. But I'd double check the dose of the pill......I don't understand why Rhiannon would have 8 mg pills instead of the usual 4 mg.

That's what the label is saying: 8mg pills. It just says 154 and R on the pills themselves.

I think I remember mentioning that she was surprised it came in smaller and it would be easier for her to cut the pill.

8 mg is the usual size for humans. Mine were prescribed for my husband, and that's what I have. Cutting it down to 1/8th is tough, but I actually managed it today. Jennifer, if you have one of the smaller syringes, like a 3ml, you can crush the pill and mix a couple mls of water with it, then squirt it directly into the tube. That's what I used to do for Kisa. I didn't mix it with the food.

Sending still more healing vines and prayers.

Well I woke up this morning and Cain was in the litterbox. Not sure how he got there but he was in there and sleeping I think. He's urinated 7 times since I took him home last night.

Taking him to the second vet this morning. (Running a bit later than usual cause I can't seem to wake up.)

Good vetty vines for the appointment with the 2nd vet. Don't forget your notebook! I hope you will see some improvement today. Thinking of you and your boy.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty
