Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

Peter,
I tried catching you on health, where I gave a short response.
Seriously, if you are not 100% comfortable with giving the metacam, I would wait and just do the bupe tonight.

I mentioned in health that metacam should not be given via injection and then followed up with daily oral doses. That is made clear in the manufacturers info sheet.

I hope you have a chance to read more info before you decide one way or another. I posted a link to a good discussion, recently on health. That also has a link to another metacam discussion from the old board. You can click on the link in my sig for more info, too.

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

Ok, just checked over her receipt. I can't seem to find any mention of them using metacam during the procedure. The only things we see related to that are listed as "pain relief injection/sedation" and "isofluraine" for anesthesia and then there is one line that says "constant rate infusion/pain relief"

Is it ok to ONLY give mocha her bupe tonight? no metacam?

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

Metacam is probably the pain relief they are speaking of. Its very, very common and typically used unless you request otherwise.

Latte has just spoken. She says, "MMMMMMMMEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW"
That means, give the bupe and see how Mocha does w/o the metacam.
(thats her personal opinion from being one who had renal failure because of it)

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

Devon
I am sorry I can't help about the medication but I was just reading
about your day today and wanted to send support and healing vines to all of you.

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

thank you everyone, for answering our endless list of questions and easing our lingering fears and doubts. Because of latte's story, we have decided to NOT give mocha her metacam tonight. Only the bupe.

In the morning we we restart up with her insulin and continue on with the bupe. I will call the vet and inform them that after researching the metacam, we have decided to not use it.

Now, one last question.

Does everyone think the 10u of bupe in a U100 syringe is a good amount for mocha?

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

Sending HUGS to Devon and Peter and hoping that Mocha will feel better real soon....
I don't know anything about the Metcam or Bupe but you are getting great advice from everyone who is in the know...
So glad she is home now and I do hope you all have a good night in spite of everything! :YMHUG:

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

Devon, I know nothing about bupe.

I'm glad you are going with what just feels comfortable for you.
I hope you and your baby.....both babies, Mocha and Peter, get some well deserved sleep tonight.

How many teeth did she get extracted? 8? Black Kitty had 8 extracted too, a little over a year ago. I can't tell you if it's ok or not, for Mocha, but you may want to read the thoughts in this discussion.

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

Our thoughts are with Mocha-girl. I hope she feels better real fast!!!! ((((Mocha))))

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

Devon can you call an animal hospital and talk to them about your concerns?

I only ask because I know that (at least in humans) that if you can control the swelling (anti-inflammatory reduces swelling)you can control the pain.

You're doing so great Devon. Dentals scare the bageezers outta me.... :(

Lots of hugs to everyone!

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

You guys have really had a day! I'm sorry I can't give any advice, but Stu wants Mocha to know that she is to heal real fast. Aspirin is both a pain killer and an anti-inflammatory. Can cats take aspirin? (ground up in their wet food)? Just a thought.

Feel better soon, dear Mocha!

Ella & Stu

Sending good dental vines for Mocha!
I recall reading the metacam conversation and I've put this meds on my list of "aboslute last resort"... but I don't recall the details, so I encourage you to read the thread WCF and Meowzi is referring to.

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe and metacam questions,, please help if poss.

(((Peter, Devon & Mocha)))

Glad she is home with you.....it sure was a long a stressfull day. Zoe had to have 3 teeth extracted because of FORL's....She came home with just Bupe and did fine, by the next morning she was eating pretty well....really soupy food, tho....she just wanted to lick it up. I can't answer your questions about the dosage of Bupe....Zoe's came in pre-filled, needleless syringes.

Devon, I cried the when I left Zoe for her extractions......actually I have cried everytime I have to leave her.

Have a good night......sleep well!

Sherry & Zoe

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe dose question?

thank you everyone!

Sherry, I was in tears when I left and when I picked her up.

celia, dentals scare the begeezers out of us too, but we are hoping this helps regulate mocha.

I don't feel comfortable giving mocha aspirin, or the metacam, so only bupe tonight.

Now, can anyone tell us if 10u in a U100 syringe is the right amount for mocha?

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe dose question?

I have no answers on bupe, have you asked in your health threads too?

hope u get answers soon!

Re: 3/19 mocha bupe dose question?

ok, we did some research online for dosing protocols on bupe. It says that anywhere from 0.05 to 0.1u per pound is an average dose. Mocha weighs 14lbs and is given 10u on a U100 syringe. So she is on the lower end of the amount she can have for her weight. So we are giving her the 10u of bupe now.

Guys so sorry you had a bad time--Moonie had 2 dentals, 1st she got 5 teeth out, sent home with 2 dose of metacam, vet said give as little as possible, not both--Second time, 4 more teeth out, new vet, gave her bupe in a liquid in her cheek--I gave her all 4 days doses--She was fine.
I believe that during the surgery they administer the metacam, because it is a powerful pain killer, with sedation...After that first day, cats can use the bupe--to go home with.
1st time i didnt know about the bupe, second I did!
Hey these teeth may have been holding Mocha back all this time :o :o That will be good, & we'll see how the numbers go..
So so glad she's home--I so know the anxiety!!!
