Hello!

Yesterday's condo

I forgot how to do decimal time again. ohmygod_smile

Okay! If you're on the Pancreatitis group most of this will be similar to what I posted there.

My insulin might be working. He was 417 last night on the PS and by +10.something he was 289. As you see, the AMPS was about the same as the +10.something. I gave him .5u again. I unfortunately slept past the shot time by nearly an hour. I got a bunch of sleep though, if not interrupted sleep, but sleep nonetheless. I'm just going to go back to my old 12/12 and hopefully that'll work better for me.

Cain actually might be drooling a little. He rested his head against one of my jackets and he left wet marks behind. It's very slight. But he's still swallowing like he's nauseous so that may be why.

He also gave me a scare this morning. I woke up at 8am and I couldn't find him. He wasn't in his towel nest or the box I made for him. Nor litter box or any place near him. I grabbed a flashlight after searching a bit and decided to try looking under my bed. Sure enough, there he was. Thankfully near the edge so I didn't have to crawl under. I'm just wondering how he got past the items I used to block the path. I'm going to make sure there are no gaps today.

He's still circling, but just thirty minutes ago he did a very large circle that got him to the litter box. He was leaning on stuff all the way and he almost went in the box too. Got his front paws in but urinated on the floor. Decent sized puddle of very dark yellow urine. Thank goodness the floor outside his litter box is plain concrete. I tested for ketones with my dubious ketone sticks and it says none so far. (Still haven't tested them on me.) Cain is not walking easily. I'm hoping I can get a video of it to show the vet. It's staggering, heavy limp shuffle almost. It's like his legs are barely supporting him. Right now he's restless I think cause he's doing little circles out and in of his towel nest. If he runs into me, he'll lean on my leg (leaning left) until he decides to move again or until I move. He's still circling only to the left.

I don't believe he can see yet either. But at least he knows the way to the litter box. He does turn his head to sound so there's that. As y'all can see, BG is lowering slowly. I'll be checking him every few hours to make sure he's not going too low. (Yay for insulin still working! dancing_cat )

That's the report on Cain for the morning. :)

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269

Hi Jennifer,

I know absolutely nothing about the issues that Cain is dealing with; I'm so sorry I can't help you with them. I just wanted to stop by and say that I'm really happy Cain's numbers have come down a bit, and I'm so glad you were able to get some sleep.

I'm keeping both you and Cain in my thoughts and prayers.

Hang in there!
Shelly

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269

I'm glad Cain's juice is working....one less thing for you to worry about. I wish you could convince your vet to give you the anti-nausea meds and pain meds...I can't believe they won't write the script. Would the vet who put the tube in be able to help with that?

Sending tons and tons of prayers that the feeding tube starts working :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: ...

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269

Jennifer, I'm so glad you got some good sleep. BIG HUGE HUG this afternoon!

Headbutts sweet Cain...and scritches...

Lots of prayers still going on...

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269

hi Jennifer,

I am sending my prayers for Cain and you. I don't have any experience with what you are dealing with. I am glad that you were able to get some sleep. You need your sleep to be able to give Cain all the care he needs. I am glad the insulin seems to be working.

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180

+2.30 180

Hey I remembered how to do decimal time again. :) Thanks all for the prayers and vines.

Amy, it's possible I can get a script from the second vet. I'm certainly going to try tomorrow. So glad I don't have to worry about getting insulin at this time. It seems to have enough punch left to work on his numbers.

Shelly, oh me too. I'm glad those numbers are coming down. And the sleep! I was forgetting things so much yesterday. It was tough getting out of bed this morning.

Lyresa, Thanks :) I'm glad too. I don't work well on short sleep. I don't know how my dad does it. He gets four hours some nights due to him being on call a lot.

Catherine, Thank you. :)

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180

Jennifer,

Sending mega feel better vines for Cain, and strength vines for you. :YMHUG: cat_pet_icon
I am following your posts and pray that Cain feels a little bit better now that his BG is coming down. I hope this other vet will help you out.

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180

I'm so sorry that you are having such a heart wrenching time  . I, too, have been following your posts but didn't want to interrupt the people who were helping you. I'm glad the insulin is working and also just wanted to pop in to say I'm sending many healing vines to Cain, and calming ones to you. And hugs! :YMHUG:

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180

Just stopping by to add more prayers, vines and good wishes.

What a tough time you're going through right now, but you're doing a great job with Cain. We all hope he'll make a full and complete recovery.

The power of LL has worked miracles before...Hopefully there's one more for Cain too.

Great to hear that the insulin is still good after a year! There's a little miracle right there!

Glad to hear you got some sleep too. It's important to take care of yourself so you can take care of Cain.

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180

Jennifer:

Jill/Alex sent me a message which I am going to post here because what she is saying is vitally important. She PM'd me because she was afraid you might not know who she is but I would urge you to listen to her. She has been around longer than anyone else I know and she has the utmost experience with lantus, levemir, FD, and sick kitties:

alex experienced a similar illness in march 2010. it knocked her out of remission... just like cain. i say similar and not the same because i did not have a feeding tube placed (in retrospect, i should have) and she was not circling, but there's enough that's similar for me to be extremely concerned about what appears to be the lack of importance when it comes to squids being incorporated in the treatment plan. the fluid cain's getting with her food is simply not enough.

today jennifer talks about cain's urine being very dark. it's worrisome. there's a buildup of toxins which need to be flushed out. alex experienced the same. at one point her urine was orange. it took massive amounts of squids to treat her... amounts that are almost unheard of normally. please look at her 2010 spreadsheet to see what i'm talking about. alex had no known heart problems and no indications of heart problems. i don't know about cain. his vet would have to assess before going ahead with squids.

imho, frequent feedings, massive amounts of squids, water, ursodiol/actigall, denamarin, and round-the-clock nursing were responsible for alex surviving. it was a long haul and she did relapse, but this all happened in early 2010. she wasn't expected to live, but here we are 4 years later.

cain's circling is a whole 'nother matter of which i have no experience.

It is my recollection that you still aren't giving fluids. Tina was urging you to do so as were many other members. If you can't get hold of your vet today to find out how much and then get him started immediately, I would get him to the ER. Please go. Better safe than sorry.

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180

i would second the advice. i trust Jill's experience and knowledge completely.

also i'm very glad the insulin is working. with this change in numbers, i think we can say it's still effective.

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180

I just stopped by to second what Marje posted about what Jill (& Alex) have said. I totally agree that Cain needs more fluids than he is getting and I too trust Jill's advise implicitly.

It's great news that Cain's Lantus appears to be working! How much food is he getting?

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180 +4.72 208

Thank you Rhiannon. :) And thank you Marje, Jill, Karrie, Julie, DD, Chris, Rachel, and Jane for all the help and well wishes and vines.

Cain's getting 15ml of A/D with a bit of water every two hours. Plus whatever water he gets when I use it to clear the tube. And A/D is pretty watery from what the pancreatitis group has been saying. The only fluids I was told to give was through the feeding tube. He had very dark yellow urine last tuesday too. And the vet said during his stay over that it was still pretty yellow then. Oh boy. I can't tell what color it is when it's in the litter box. The only reason I caught the color today was that he missed the box. Shoot. I didn't think to mention it to the second vet cause it slipped my mind in trying to give her the whole history of that week. Unless my primary vet mentioned it to her. I don't know. I have seen Jill on the boards some. :)

First thing tomorrow morning is the best I can do. I'll add extra water to the food. It's all I can do. He is urinating more than he has the past week at least. He is getting ursodiol daily. I'll try to get more fluids into him.

The pancreatitis group thinks that the anesthesia might have caused the neuro problems that Cain is experiencing. Or it's possibly hepatic encephalopathy. I'm getting a whole list of questions to ask either vet tomorrow.

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180

I just figured out why Cain was swinging his head left and right. I think he's trying to see with his whiskers.

He's feeling warm too. I'll keep a very close eye on him tonight. If something else happens, well screw it I'll take him into the emergency vet that the second vet recommends. My quick research shows I can afford the walk in cost at least. It's the rest of it that scares me.

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180, +4.72 208, +8.31 209

Unfortunately no. I'm woefully under equipped in useful items. All I have is a digital mouth thermometer...somewhere.

But I just pet him again and felt along the shaved areas and he doesn't feel as warm was he was when I wrote that. He feels like now like when he's been sleeping curled up warm.

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180, +4.72 208, +8.31 209

Jennifer, you have to follow your intuition here. Whatever you decide to do, we all support you.
It might be a load off your mind to take him to the ER. Do you know anything about the vets there?

Sending lots of vines, good thoughts and prayers for your boy tonight.

And hugs to you.

Ella & Rusty

Re: 3/16 Cain AMPS 269 +2.30 180 +4.72 208 +8.31 209 +11.25

+11.25 200

Well at least he's been fairly flat today.

Ella, Afraid not. Other than having a number on hand for hypo situations tonight was the first time I've been digging up reviews. Too bad the vets with the good reviews are closed sundays. :/ I'm keeping an eye on him. I think I found one with decent reviews on yelp so if something happens I'll try going there.
