Brownie went to the vet today for a pre-dental check. His bloodwork looks good, except for his kidneys (BUN 47, CREA 2.8). He had dentals every year until age 16, when 3 vets told me not to do them anymore due to the anaesthesia risk. He is now 18.5 years old and I really want to get a dental for him - he has no obvious caries, but has inflamation and lots of tartar. The vet said to give him 200cc fluids the night before and then again that night (which I just started doing with him 2/week a few weeks ago). She also said that she will NOT be using injectable ketamine (hard on kidneys), just isoflurane gas. She also advised me to give him no food that am and 1/2 dose of insulin that morning. I want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing - I don't want him to end up with horrible, painful teeth, so I feel like it is a risk worth taking. Simpkin is also scheduled (also 18.5 years old, same teeth, BUN 64, CREA 2.6). Thoughts, anyone? Thanks! nailbite_smile
