Brownie went to the vet today for a pre-dental check. His bloodwork looks good, except for his kidneys (BUN 47, CREA 2.8). He had dentals every year until age 16, when 3 vets told me not to do them anymore due to the anaesthesia risk. He is now 18.5 years old and I really want to get a dental for him - he has no obvious caries, but has inflamation and lots of tartar. The vet said to give him 200cc fluids the night before and then again that night (which I just started doing with him 2/week a few weeks ago). She also said that she will NOT be using injectable ketamine (hard on kidneys), just isoflurane gas. She also advised me to give him no food that am and 1/2 dose of insulin that morning. I want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing - I don't want him to end up with horrible, painful teeth, so I feel like it is a risk worth taking. Simpkin is also scheduled (also 18.5 years old, same teeth, BUN 64, CREA 2.6). Thoughts, anyone? Thanks! nailbite_smile

No thoughts or words of wisdom, Patricia, just good wishes and good vines for both of your boys. BTW, Brownie is looking good today!!

Not sure if the 171 was because he came home and ate an entire can of fud or because he dropped too low at the vet and is now rebounding. He ended up being at the vet for 4 hours! I had left a can of food for him, but I'm not sure if he ate anything there or not... Hoping for a lower PMPS...

WE are SOOOOO glad to see you here--That Brownie is such a trooper!! Glad to hear you are all OK & hope his dental will go smoothly-HUGS~!

Just read Hillary and Maui's post regarding dentals and now I'm totally freaked out! I'm going to ask my vet about the IV catheter placement and about monitoring blood pressure (which I don't think they can do). I'm definitely going to be doing some more research into this tomorrow. NiNi LL - sleep well...
