How’s Mouse?
She's better, I think. She pooped during the night and is up and about. She is very picky on the food, but will eat. The thing is she sits on the stairs and yowls all day long. It makes us all crazy. There's no satisfying her. Even if I go upstairs with her, she goes right back down and cries. She's fine....does amoxicillin make cats nutty????

I don't think nuttiness is a listed side effect for Amoxycillin! LOL! Usually just diarrhea, vomiting and loss of appetite are the ones to look for and I don't think that's happened with Mouse (thank goodness!) Hopefully, when she's all the way better she'll cut this out!

Definitely the lack of appetite. She's hungry but she won't eat anything I give her.

This is not good considering how long she's going to be on this antibiotic :-( I'm unhappy about this! Do you feed her some food before giving her the antibiotic in the morning? And evening? Will she eat anything? Kibble? Fancy Feast. Baby food? Fishy things? Yogurt? Cheese? Food with parmesan on top? It's twice a day, right?

She will eat several things. It's just figuring out which one at which time. This morning she ate a decent amount of boiled chicken and a bit of fishy food. Then she got her pill and miralax. Just now she ate a bit of Proplan chicken. She's hungry. In a bit she'll get some slippery elm bark and probiotic and whatever food I can convince her to eat. I always feed her before the Amoxicillin. I made that mistake 1 time. She didn't lose any weight this week. Didn't gain any, either. It's a full time job!

You're doing great then! Especially the slippery elm... and you are separating the slippery elm and the antibiotic by a few hours it sounds like? So that will prevent the slippery elm from interfering with any absorption of the antibiotic. Hang in there!

I just started separating them yesterday. I had been doing them together. I read about that on here somewhere yesterday. Luckily it still worked. Phew! Off to try to entice my girl to eat!

That proves that it is something we do just as a precautionary measure (separating the slippery elm and the antibiotics). I've long read that it's a good idea to separate slippery elm and other meds... but this proves that it's not absolutely necessary in the case of antibiotics at least.... since Mouse's still have been effective. Hope she eats/ate!

She's turned her nose up at 2 dishes so far......debating on a dose of Serena, but I don't notice it does much.

Mouse has stopped eating. She ate a tiny bit this a.m. The vet sent some Tumil k because her potassium is a bit low. I gave it to her 5 hours ago. I syringes a smidge of food and got a cerenia down her about 90 min ago. I'm trying to feed her, but no go. What can I do?

You never got any Zofran from the vet? I
Boiled chicken, Fancy Feast Turkey, Fancy Feast Chicken....she does drink lots of water....I'm trying to syringe feed her but it is going very slowly.....like 2 ml at a time slow....
oh, I am sorry. At least you are getting a little food in her which will protect her from hepatic lipidosis until you can get her to the vet. You have Forti Flora? Baby food? What have you been syringe feeding?

They don’t know what is causing her inappetence at this point. If it’s a kidney infection like the vet thinks (and she may well be right) they need to do something more. She’s drinking a lot. You would not think she’s dehydrated then. It’s very worrying. I know you know this. I would say to keep feeding small amounts until you can get her back to the vet. You don’t have Zofran (Ondansetron)?

I dont have Zofran. What is it? I have Cerenia. I'm not sure it does anything for her. I've syringe fed Fancy Feast Turkey and Chicken. I have Forti Flora. I've been giving her about half a capsule of S Boulardii every afternoon.

I dont have Zofran. I'm thinking we will be back at the vet in the morning.

Sorry. I don’t think I answered your question about Zofran. It is a very effective anti-nausea medication. It is a human medication that is frequently used in Cats. It is only available through a prescription, and you need to go to a human pharmacy to get it. Many people find it works much better than Cerenia in their cats’ for nausea. Of course, we don’t know if or why Mouse would be nauseated.

When did she last poop?
She went yesterday. Totally normal poop. They repeated her bloodwork and urine on Saturday. Everything looked pretty good. Her ALT was 133, AMY was 1126, BUN was 34 and Potassium was 3.4. The vet said it could be very early kidney disease or the infection. Today I called and she said she wants Mouse on a Potassium supplement and that would help her feel much better. Her thought was the low potassium is causing her symptoms. She's had 1 dose so far.

It could take a few doses to see an improvement. But yes, low potassium can make a cat feel low. I hope maybe tomorrow she will feel better.

That potassium is just on the low end of normal. But who knows where Mouse’s usual normal is. And the ALT is very slightly elevated. I’ve seen a lot of fluctuations in cat’s liver enzymes like ALT. I would not worry about that number.

She's eating a tiny bit of canned tuna!
Hooray. Every bit helps. Sometimes even syringe feeding them a little seems to have the effect of making them eat a bit more. I think getting some food into them just makes them feel better - and then they want to eat more (sometimes a little/ sometimes more.)

She seems somewhat perkier. She stretched and drank some water and used the pan. Maybe the cerenia is kicking in. I still need to give her the antibiotic.

She is eating on her own!!!! Fancy Feast beef this time. If I gavebhervthe Cerenia at 7 past night, can I give mirtazapine now? I asked the tech but she didn't seem super confident.

Yes. mirtazapine can be given any time. Did you get pills or the trans-dermal Mirataz that is rubbed onto the inner ear?

I have the transdermal. Im going to hold off for a bit since she's eating. She seems more like herself today....sitting in the windows and trotting down the hall.

I would hold off too. One thing to remember when using the Mirataz is to start slowly! Do not give her the full dose (length of the strip shown on the box). A lot of cats get really hyper and some even get aggressive (one of mine did) on the full dose. Many cats will get restless and meowy on the full dose. Mouse has already been meowing like crazy at times so that’s the last thing that you need! I would start with half or less of the amount recommended. I used to give about a half every other day (not every day) and that did the job.

Have you had Mouse’s thyroid checked? It would be T4 in the lab results.

Thank you! I have a feeling she had the tablets years ago and it made her nutty. And she's a tiny cat, too.

They did check her thyroid back in January and it was fine. She has always had tummy problems. When we had her spayed at 6 months she ended up in the emergency vet for a week afterwards. Constant vomiting and diarrhea. Since then whenever she gets stressed I bring out the slippery elm bark.

That was one expensive spay surgery! I have a kitty now who is about 4 and she was spayed as a kitten. Now she has swelling of her mammary glands, or what appears to be. The vet thinks that whoever did her spay left some material behind and now she says we need to go back in and open her up to remove it. :-( Not only do I not want to pay for it, but I don't want for her to have to go through with this surgery. I'm super upset for Esther.

Oh my....that's awful. Poor baby! I'm so sorry.

I was just thinking of the meowing. High blood pressure or thyroid come to mind, but maybe her tummy just hurts and she wants to let everyone know about it!

I don't know why she's howling, but she's at it again. It's like she's super hungry, but doesn't want anything I give her. She did just eat a bunch of purebites chicken. But she's never satisfied. She's also beating on the other kitties if they cross her path. She needs more calories, but I'm afraid of who she'll become if I give her the mirtazapine.

I gave Mouse the Miratz last night. It took awhile but she is eating like a champ! Today she has been up and yowling all day. I updated the vet and she says it is most likely the low potassium and we should give the supplement until Saturday morning and then call with an update. The did check her blood pressure and it was fine. She has just now laid down on my lap to rest. First time all day she's stopped moving.

That’s sweet. It will make her restless. You can tweak the amount and how often you give it to her.
