Hello everyone.

The holistic vet paid a visit to Sid today. She spent most of the time gathering Sid's history and reading his reports. She examined him and told me he is pretty well hydrated. She suggested that I give him 40mls through his feeding tube rather than SQ because the SQ causes him stress and because getting the fluids through his stomach is more natural. She said if his ketone level is raised or there is a concern, supplement the tube fluids with SQ.

Sid has been anemic this entire time with his PCV at about 22% last blood test (a week or so ago). She said to give linotonic to Sid. It is an iron supplement and will help if he tolerates it without vomiting or too much diarrhea.

She did not do a diabetic acupuncture treatment because that moves too much blood through the stomach and spleen area and that is where Sid has the small cell lymphoma. She did not want to "move" the cancer or disturb it so she only did a chi harmonization where she used a very small insulin size syringe to give Sid a little b12 at 4 points - 2 on his back legs and 2 on the front legs. She told me that she would not do the treatment if it upset him or he didn't tolerate it. Well, Sid is such a trooper about everything. He didn't even flinch and was a very good boy.

She thinks that his ravenous hunger might be due to an elevated T4 level. Though last bloodwork showed him at 2.4, she said that older cats are supposed to be even lower than that. I probably haven't mentioned this yet, but Sid gets so hungry that i've caught him in the last 4-5 days eating the little pieces of carpet that the cats scratch off the scratcher. So I have to pick all this up or he eats it and then wretches. I have only caught him doing it 3 times and then I fed him but now what she is telling me makes sense. I have to check his latest T4 level from a week or so ago and then he might need a low dose of tapazole.

I'm sure none of us are surprised at the possibility that Sid could have a bit of hyperthyroid disease on top of everything else.

I'm keeping him on the prozinc for the time being and will update his SS which I have not done for a couple of days.
His ketone readings from the meter: Sat 1.1 Sun 2.9 Mon 1.5 Tuesday (today) 1.5
On the urine strip, negative each day.

Have a good evening everyone!! :-D :-D

A holistic vet is a great idea. I hope you liked her and have confidence in her advice. I hope the iron and b12 help. I had no idea he was that hungry wow. Can he have food available 24x7? Sending big hugs.

Hi Karrie,

You asked about Sid's heart on the other post. His heart is ok - not enlarged or anything like that. The heavy breathing is from the pneumonia and hopefully not ketones but that could be possible. He does get fluids every day - I was giving subQ but the holistic vet suggested I give him extra fluids (40ml) through his tube every day. I will try that awhile.

He could have food available 24/7 - I'm just afraid of what it would do to his bg. That carpet eating just started in the last week or so. Once he spit up and I found a piece of carpet in it and I thought it was a coincidence, but then i actually caught him eating the carpet so then I knew what he was doing. His appetite has tapered off a bit in the last couple days - might be good (no carpet eating) but might be bad if it is related to ketones. don't get me wrong though - he is still eating and has already eaten a can today and waits for me in the kitchen to feed him. He just doesn't seem as ravenous as he was previously.

I do like this vet. She treats my felv+ cats because she does home visits and that means my felv girls don't have to get in the car and go anywhere which is stressful (plus they are reformed ferals so they get extra stressed in new places). She is the one who came to my house and euthanized Whisper on the comfort of my couch and made her last moments so peaceful. She even choked up with tears during the procedure.

Hi Lydia, This report is encouraging. It is probably a good idea to have the thyroid checked again. Hyper T speeds up the whole body and that is not what you want at present!

Sid is truly amazing to go along with everything that is done! What a great kitty. I hope that the pneumonia clears up soon and that all the other issues will diminish so that you and Sid can get back to normality.

Lots of hugs from us,

Ella & Rusty

It sounds like it was a comfortable vet visit for you and for Sid. I'm curious about the carpet eating, and if you find out anything more about that and Sid's unusual hunger, let us know. Sending get well vines for the pneumonia.
Big hugs to both of you. :YMHUG:
