Blackie didn't eat as well last night, but I did manage to get some food into him at +2 and +4. He seemed really bloated last night - he just looked huge. So I didn't give him fluids last night. He also went more than 24 hrs without a poop, but finally this morning we got that done. He looked a little better this morning, but he didn't want to eat at shot time. He hadn't gained weight when I weighed him this morning, so I gave him his fluids. And he did eat at +2 right before I left for tbp. My MIL will go to our house at +4 to feed Blacki and DH will be home at +6.

I'm hoping we'll get the bloodwork results back today. I'm going to call the vet and see if there's anything they can do to make him more comfortable. Thank you for all the healing vines and prayers. We really do appreciate them.

I am praying for MJ's Butthead, Claudia's Rocket and Cheryl's Whiskers and any other kitties that are under the weather.

Please send your prayers for Blackie. He has peed on himself twice now and when DH got home he couldn't walk. I'm home now and he can walk now, but he doesn't look good. I'm taking him into the vet shortly. The b/w did come back and it didn't look bad, so I don't know what's going on. I'll post when I get back.

By the time we got to the vet Blackie was feeling a little better. He even cleaned himself when he was in the carrier. The vet checked him over and didn't see anything very different than on Monday. He also checked his red cell count just in case he was bleeding internally and it hadn't changed. So we talked about our options. He said its either a liver infection (cholangelic hepatitis) or its cancer, but he said in his experience there's a 90% chance its cancer.

We could take him to CSU. Its a 5 hour drive and we'd have to be there a minimum of 2 days. And the cost of the tests would probably be from $2500 on up. And the odds are that they would find cancer that is untreatable. Blackie hates the car and I just think he's too frail to make the trip and go through all those tests/biopsy. So I asked lots of questions and what we decided to do is treat it as if it is a liver infection and see what happens. We're starting antibiotics, both Zenequin and Amoxicillin. We're also going to give daily Cerenia injections. This is an off-lable application of Cereia. My vet said that Dr. Twedt at CSU has used it daily on hundreds of CRF cats and it has helped their appetite, made them feel better and they lived longer than expected. He said that Dr. Twedt is working on publishing the info. And we're going to continue the pred and the Mirtazapine.

From the shape of the liver on the x-ray, my vet said it couldn't be hepatatic lipidosis especially since Blackie is eating. He also said he could do a liver biopsy here, but he does not recommend it because he cannot do it laparoscopally. I also asked about draining the fluid and he said there wasn't enough fluid to try that. He also said lasik (sp?) does not remove fluid from the chest - another CSU study.

I had to ask how much time we had and he said anywhere from a few hours to a few months. So we are in hospice mode and we are going to do everything we can to make Blackie comfortable. I have to thank you all for the prayers and love. As I was sitting in the exam room waiting for the vet, I thought of all of you and I could feel the love of this board.

Ele - I am so very very sorry. I know how difficult this is. You will take care of him, you'll love him and hold him, and cuddle him. You will make him as comfortable as you can. And you will thank your lucky stars for the day that he walked into your life. I will pray for a miracle, and hope that Blackie feels better. You will always be in our thoughts, and our hearts.

I'm so glad he's feeling a little better. So great that you have CSU so close by. I hope the new treatment helps him feel much, much better, and that you have more time together than it feels like right now. More hugs and scritches.
 
Actually Ele, I'm going to repost some of my thoughts.

I don't know what the vet meant about the shape of the liver. I've been on the FAF feeding group for 2.5 years and I've seen many cat owners post about cholangelic hepatitis and get assisted through this. They are very sick cats when they find FAF. Many members and moderators of the pancreatitis group can give you invaluable advice here.

And regarding FHL.... Maverick almost died from this. It can be very scary. And cats DO GET FHL even if they are still eating. Its not just anorexic cats. Pancreatitis and FHL and other liver issues seem to go hand in hand.

So please do not discount these. Please do post on the pancreatitis board and arm yourself with info and get more input.

I hope I'm not out of line.

I'm so sorry to see that your sweet Blackie is so ill - glad to see he's at least feeling somewhat better and am sending many hopes and prayers that it is indeed a liver infection and that the meds will help.

He is so fortunate to have your loving care - hoping he feels better.

I'm so glad Blackie is feeling a bit better and that you have a plan. It sounds like your vet is trying to stay on top of current treatments, which is great.
 
(((Ele))) I am glad that the vet has come up with a strategy. I will pray that the antibiotics help Blackie. I have always had excellent luck with Cerenia injections, though I have never used it for more than five days in a row. I have found that it kicks in after 1 - 3 injections.

I agree wholeheartedly with what Libby said. Your vet sounds very up on the latest...and he gave you possibilities. I am so glad you are giving him the meds now and hopefully, they will make a difference. Is it so bad to beg for a miracle here? that it is an infection? I am praying that no matter what Blackie will feel better and that you will find lots of information that will help you both.
I will be praying for Blackie and hope that you will give him some hugs and scritches from us.....We love you, Blackie....

I'm glad Blackie is feeling a little better although I know it is bittersweet, hearing what the vet said today. I will be praying that the medicine helps Blackie feel much better and that you will be able to spend lots of quality time with Blackie. Lots of hugs to you and Blackie.
 
So sorry for the news, Ele, but am glad to see that you and the vet have formulated a plan that takes into account Blackie's limitations. You guys are in my thoughts and prayers. Hoping the treatment works and keeps Blackie comfortable. Hope you are able to get some rest tonight.
 
Ele, I think you made the best choice to treat it as a liver infection and see how Blackie responds to the new medicines. He needs to be home with you, not spending 2 days in a hospital getting tested. I'm sure Blackie is telling you right now how relieved he is to be in his home and have you close to him. Please tell him that all of us are sending him our most positive thoughts and prayers. We all love you, Blackie! Feel better!

It sounds like you have a good plan in place.
My Max had HL twice and I would give hime hepato support, Sam-e, Denysol.
All are very good enzymes for the liver. Maybe you should ask about that too.
