Yesterday's Condo

Shadow had half his breffis and is waiting for the other half ...30 minutes. I had a wonderful sleep last night except for the +8 which I am used to. But this is about Shadow...isn't it? He has done the two LB Ps already and has been purring and preening this morning after eating. Everything seems just fine with Shadow....
The vet's offced called with the results on the blood work. Shadow is totally fine....all values were in the normal range with no signs of infection in the blood. the BG registered 177 (he had been 143 two hours earlier at home) so that shows to me that he is not prone to stress like his sister.
Now for Raja....her BGs were 69 at home at +6. Vet blood draw showed +9=160. She was rolled up in a ball on the examining table and I know that she was terrified and always suspected that she elevated her BGs under stress. They said that she should be on a low fat diet since here values were very elevated. They will be mailing the blood work so i will have it but her cholesterol was 277!!! Triglycerides 160 , very high and Lipase 285 (very high)
I had been giving them Wellness for about a week prior to the blood test. Must be too high in fat for Raja.

she has a spot on her neck that looks like an allergic reaction to something....dermatitis of some kind...they gave her a shot and then sent me home with Amoxicillin liquid for twice a day. Raj spent the day in the closet after I surprised her with the dropper. Last night, she freaked out and proceeded to foam at the mouth for quite awhile after i gave it to her...she was running all over the place and I was following with a paper towel and she just let this foam come out of her mouth. Pathetic what her Mama Bean did to her...is this normal? Am used to giving her Clavamox and that never happened before.

Anyway, this is going to be a long two weeks for Raja and her mean Mama

Suddenly, SHE has become my Problem child :o

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

Poor Raja!! Cant understand why someone hasnt come out with pet AB's and meds flavored for animals!!!
Clavamox tastes like banana!! Other meds are just gross--No wonder Raj got so upset!! Hope it gets easier today..Mean Momma bean means well!! What shot did they give her???
Shadow is doing amazing!! Look at that nice amps, could go somewhere green today!!
All cats get stressed at the vet, well most..
Hope they settle down today & feel good.. Have a great Day Pat--HUGS~!

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

poor Raja!! What was the shot they gave her?
Wellness is a bit high in fat, but not as high as EVO, lol
U might get some ideas from Janet's food charts if ur thinking to switch her.

Glad to hear Shadow's BW is good!Yai!!

Morris does the same thing with a pill...so far hasn't with a liquid but he can lock his jaws so NOTHING can get in. When he foams the pill, depending on the size, it can take awhile but I bet it ...ll comes out. Have you tried a pill shooter? I use the pill shooter and then follow with a feeding syringe of water...I think it was Jojo said that you should always follow pills with water. All that said, pilling or medicating Morris is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do....let me give an injection any day!!

On another note, are you enjoying this new cold snap???? NOT!!!!

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

Good morning Pat and Shadow.
Do you know if the shot they gave Raja was a steroid? Putty gets these scab like things on his head that vet said was an allergic reaction and gave him a steroid shot for it when he was a kitten . I hope it wasn't a steroid shot.

Nice bloo AMPS for Shadow today. cat_pet_icon

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

Great start for Shadow and poor Raja. Not only does she have to go to the vet, they give you evil medicine for her.

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

Good Morning!
Poor Raja.
Yes, in my experience any time I have given medicine that does not agree with latte's palate she will foam and drool. She could share some stories with Raja about momma chasing her around the house with a towel trying to catch the drool. Sometimes it will get better in time, as they expect whats coming. Other times, not. You could try giving it to raja in a place where she cant run away so quick...that way you can help wipe the drool before she starts running away. Is it a liquid or a pill? If a pill, see if you can wrap it in something (thin coat of pill pocket, cheese wiz, butter) to prevent Raja from tasting it. If its a liquid, well....only time will tell if she will start tolerating it better.

Good start for mr shadow. Latte saw her shadow this morning and kinda jumped. Do you know where your boy was around 6:45 central time?!?! I

Hope you have a great day Pat!

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

Nice start to the day for Shadow. But poor little Raja. I hope she gets a little more used to the medication. But--dare I ask?--is this medication necessary? Personally, I would question it, to be sure it isn't one of those just-in-case things. I hate using antibiotics when they are not really essential. (Apologies if you already did this and I am just a big mouth.)

You can also read my little rant about food in Sami's condo today. :-D

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

Hi Pat
Very nice start to the day for Shadow and good news on the blood work.
Guess he is getting ready for the party!!!
Max is going to pack up tomorrow, make a stop in Toronto then head down to pick up Logan.

Can I ask a bit more on Raja's scab because I seem to always have it with Chloe.
Sometimes she has terrible patches on her neck, and forehead and it comes and goes.
I have never been able to figure out what it is. One vet had given me a cream to out on and the last vet prefers to leave it alone and let it dry.
She has one now and I just cleaned it and left it alone but it drives me crazy not knowing
what it is. Not once was I ever given an AB for it.

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

Good start to the day, Shadow! :)

It's hard to be a "mean mama", even though that's not what you are at ALL, Pat. Hopefully the medication will at least work so it's not all for naught. I hope your "problem child" gets used to this new (temporary) routine just like she and her brother got used to getting their ears poked and twice a day shots. Fingers and paw crossed. :)

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

I guess my other post got lost in space. I went into the closet and got Raja out. She was hiding I assume in fear that the meds would be given again. I held her on my bed. she was terrified i think. Her head was tucked in my arm and her little ears were flat against her head. We talked a little....I told her I wasn't going to give her any more of that stuff. She didn't go back into the closet and actually came out to the living room.

I went over to CVS and bought Preparation H as the doctor said and Raja was ok when I put it on...not like the other ointments I have used. I had a prescription one. Quadritop ointment that did have a steroid in it so I didn't use that too much cause she would lick it off. Then I used Calendula gel, polysporin and neosporin ointments. All were licked off. I let it dry but once it scabbed over, she would scratch with her back leg and open it again...and again...and again. I tried a bandage around her neck....she would hide when that was on too but once the scab formed, I guess the itchiness caused her to open it again. Maybe the preparation H will stop the itchiness.

So, I told her that IF it was something that the amoxicillin was needed desperately, I would have to fight her every day twice and give it to her. But, since the sore is not infected, then i am going to stop administering it to her. I hope I am doing the right thing. she did get a shot of antibiotic at the vet but I didn't want the Covenia....so she gave me enough liquid Amoxicillin for 2 weeks.

She said that it could be an allergy...maybe to fleas or something else. I told her that I didn't see an evidence of fleas at any time. (After living on the Cape, I knew about fleas for sure and used to use Frontline for ticks as well....or Advantage...whichever does both...I always forget nowadays) So, I figure i will not feed fish even once a week to her and see if that helps. We haven't been doing beef much at all so I doubt it could be that.

Anyway, the sore looked better today so I put the Prep H on and we will see how it goes. I don't think hse has ever had Amoxicillin ever before. The foaming form the mouth went on quite awhile...I kept wiping her mouth but she was really freaked about it. Today, it was almost as if she understood what I was saying though. Weird. when I told her I was not going to give it to her, she calmed down.

I agree with Lydia about not using it unless it is absolutely necessary. She has a case of dermatitis I guess form unknown causes. It heals but the itching gets to her....so I will see if this stays closed with the Prep H...has anyone ever heard of using that before? Interesting....but I have tried just about everything else....hopefully, this will be ok now...

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

awwww pat! :YMHUG:

Any cat would be so blessed to have you as their bean.

Maybe call the vet and communicate your decision to them.

I hope you had a great day.

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

The only off-label use I have heard of for Prep H is that you put it on tattoos to stop the itching. Assuming that the reason Raja scratches the wound is because it itches, I don't see why Prep H wouldn't help.

I am glad she was able to sense what you were saying about the medication and she came out. It's amazing how much they know or sense when we talk to them, isn't it? When Buzz was acting all weird and freaky last night, I talked to her and told her that it was okay to be grouchy but that I still needed to test her. I told her she could fight me on it or not, but I would win in the end and it would be much more pleasant for her if she just let me do it. I told her to feel free to complain (by yowling/growling) as much as she wanted, as long as she sat there and let me test. She did complain, but she did let me test. ;)

I hope the Prep H works and Raja's sore clears up. Buzz is allergic to fish, and it took a long time (about 4 weeks, if I remember correctly) to see a real improvement in her condition (allergy caused itching which led to overgrooming which led to a completely bald belly), so if you suspect it might be fish, hang in there on the no-fish trial for awhile. Here is a website I found helpful: http://marvistavet.com/html/feline_fur-mowing.html

I know Raja isn't really fur-mowing, but it does talk about itchy spots and allergens, so you might find some of it useful. :)

Re: 2/15 Shadow AMPS=192

Hi Pat,

So sorry that Raja was having such a hard time with the meds. Hope the prep H works and she does'nt need anymore of that AB. If you do have to give her the rest of it, why don't you use the kitty burrito style. You know wrap her in a towel and give it to her. It won't stop her from foaming but at least I think you'll be able to give it to her. One of Sara's civies is real hard to pill. I found it very easy using that stlye.

Shadow is doing great! Nice to hear that his blood came back so good.

Have a nice night Pat.

P.S. It was'nt very easy typing this with a 12# cat on my lap and rubbing his chin all over my hands etc. :-D

Recap his day today:

PMPS=212 ~ 1.50u Lev

Well, this was a boring yellow day except fo AMPS. Hmmmm....wonder if this is the calm before the drop?
He was so cute playing this morning, all by himself, with the little catnip mouse. He was pushing it all over the tile floor and throwing it around. So cute.

Then later this afternoon, he was grooming Raja's head and ear while the two of them sat in front of the TV. I was watching to make sure he didn't get a mouthful of Preparation H... I've said before that there was a time that she was repulsed by him when his PU/PD was in full bloom and she would not go near him at all....never. So this is a testimony to how his breath has improved and how wonderful he is after receiving insulin since August.

Another exhausting Olympic night...what will i do for exercise when they end? I knock myself out every night watching them....hope you all have a good one!

+4=144

Great Olympic night once again...kitties are eating their midnight snack and i am getting ready for ni ni. :-D
What time shall I set my alarm for tonight...hmmmm....guess the +8 should do it. Hope you all have a good night's sleep...
