Thank you everyone for your kind words for Whisper. The house is very quiet tonight without her rattly breathing and I am very sad.
I did a blog post about her that talks about the horrible situation I rescued her from. She spent the last year of her life in relative comfort and I did everything I could to try to keep her healthy. Here is the blog: http://dailypurr.wordpress.com/2011/03/20/whispers-story-life-with-a-cat-hoarder/
I visited Sid tonight and he is pretty perky. I just don't have a good feeling about when he comes home. The vet said there is nothing more that can be done for him. If he goes into DKA again, then it is a sign that whatever is causing it is not fixable and the DKA will keep happening and it isn't fair to Sid to keep hospitalizing him because that is no quality of life. I really don't want to make that decision, but I'm not sure what choice I have. I will feel like I've let him down, but every single vet we've seen says there is nothing more that can be done.
I did ask the specialist if Sid could have something such as Addison or Cushings or some other rare type of condition and he said he didn't think so and that Sid's problems come from the lymphoma and IBD and probably has pancreatitis also. They did try him on baytril for a couple of weeks but that was in between the first and second hospitalizations and the only thing that appears to have made a slight difference so far is the pred and chlorambucil. So I can only hope for the best when he comes home but I'm prepared for the worst because I can't hospitalize him again. It's very frustrating feeling so helpless and out of options.
