We were away this weekend and my brother was able to do Mo's insulin for us. He was very growly towards my brother's girlfriend which was weird. Maybe she tried to get too much attention from him, I don't know.

I'm concerned about Mo today. I get home from work at 4pm and he's only on his second can of food and hasn't fully finished his breakfast. He has eaten most of the second can now and he is purring away. But his ears feel very hot. I don't know if he is feeling unwell or if Tim just neglected to give him his normal amount of food, I don't know. At least we have an appointment in just under 90 minutes for a check up with our regular vet. He's been very slow since he was hospitalised over a month ago now. He hasn't really got his pep back. That's what worries me. Is he in pain? Honestly, I can't tell. I tested him last night when I got home from the weekend trip and he was in the 400s. I haven't yet put it in the spreadsheet and I haven't been home today to test. Will do so shortly.

In positive news, he has been rather cuddly lately. The cuddles never last long, but they are very nice!

Anyway, I'll update when I get back from the vet.
 
It would appear that every vet appointment involves tears from me now. Pru emailed the vet letting us know that Mo has or has had Toxoplasmosis and that could explain his behaviour, his constant dilated pupils, and his not wanting to be touched in certain places. The vet wasn't able to do a physical exam except to weigh him because he was attacking an fighting any touch. She has come to the conclusion that the vet clinic has failed to make it feel like a safe space for him and he has very negative associations with the vet.

But yeah, Pru just called me and said she will dispense the antibiotics for Mo for the toxoplasmosis tomorrow morning, so I will pick that up tomorrow. He will need to be on the medication for at least a month. I'm really hoping it works.

I had a teary discussion with the vet about knowing when it's time to let him go. She said that no one will judge us if we find we just can't do it anymore. If it gets to the point where he's constantly aggressive at home, that's when I know it'll be time to let him go. Tim and I had a big chat about it and we've decided that if he is still not better by September, which is a year after his diabetes diagnosis, we will discuss whether it's time to let him go. I love him so much, and it hurts to say this, but money is a big problem for us and it's affecting my quality of life. It hurts so much to see him unwell and upset. I absolutely want to figure out what's going on with him and I want him to get better. I will do everything I can before we make the final decision. Our vet said she would come to our house and help him pass when it eventually is time. Whether that is in September or years from now, so that brings me comfort.

But yeah, I'm exhausted. We are leaving him alone tonight except when it's time to give the Cerenia...that should be fun.

Have any kitties here had Toxoplasmosis???
 
I expect kitties have had toxoplasmosis. Some reading for you from University of Cornell. Treatment is clindamycin, which is a really strong antibiotic. I know this from personal experience. It can cause GI upset. I recommend you make sure Mo is taking a probiotic too. Give it at least two hours before or after the antibiotic.
 
Aww Katy, I'm so sorry to hear that Mo's not feeling well...and the toxoplasmosis on top of it all.

I do hope they can help you sort it all out. It's a difficult decision you're facing...

Hugs to you all, Katy :bighug: Jax was just on clindamycin after his dental surgery - he had the liquid and it's bitter - I just squirted in his mouth and he was mostly compliant - I offered food right after to help with the bitterness. Also, I had Jax on a therapeutic dose of s. boulardii to help with side effects Wendy mentioned - I gave it 2-4 hours after the antibiotic and Jax's stool stayed pretty normal (I just mixed the s. boulardii in with his food). :bighug::bighug::bighug:

My previous cat got toxoplasmosis. No big deal ! In my opinion, you need to stop stressing so much over Mo. Give him time to recover from the pancreatititis. It took months for Phoenix to get to feeling normal. He had days when he was lethargic and other days when he felt good. It is just like people recovering from a bad illness.

Remember in one of my previous posts, I told you that my vet had told me to prepare myself with Phoenix. I no longer use that vet. Believe it or not, she was supposed to be one of the best. She even had a cable TV show. She didn't even give Phoenix pain meds for the pancreatititis.

I would at least wait until September. Please give Mo time to recover and stop rushing to the vet all the time. You might shop around for a vet that isn't so expensive. The two best vets that I have had were small town country vets. They are used to handling all types of animals including cows, horses and wildlife. Also, as I suggested earlier, talk to your vet about the cost of the medication and services. ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE !!

If I had followed that so called fabulous vet's advice, Phoenix wouldn't be here with me now. She couldn't handle Phoenix either. She wanted to keep him under sedation for two days to give him intravenous antibiotics. He had a breathing problem with a burned esophagus at the time from pancreatic powder she had prescribed. He wouldn't have lasted a couple of hours. I went home and went to a new vet that a friend had recommended. He put Phoenix on pain meds and antibiotic pills.

Phoenix is now 34 lbs. He runs outside the minute I open the door. He is actually healthier than he has been in years. He is better than he was before he got sick. Please if you are having problems with Mo's aggression, purchase a squeeze cage. You can buy one for around $45. Feed Mo his meals in it so he gets used to it. They look just like a dog crate. The only difference is the back wall of the cage slides forward to squeeze him up against the side. You or the vet can easily reach through to give injections or do an examination.

You and Mo have a good day ! Leave him alone and give him time to recover and you stop stressing so much. Go out and have a good time or do something you enjoy. Let Mo relax and get to feeling better.

First, that was a nice uplifting response to a thread that had me wincing. Second, PLEASE can you share a photo of your 34lb Phoenix? Maybe with another cat for comparison? What a fine healthy boy you have, good work!!

@katy and mo, stay strong. We're all cheering for you and Mo (I was going to say rooting for you and Mo, but I think that has a different meaning in your part of the world! ;)). Hope you were able to have a relaxing evening. If you can relax, Mo can relax. :bighug:

I would love to share a picture but I am not very tech savvy. When I have some free time, I will sit down and try to figure out how to this. Let's hope for a good day today for all of us.
