12/7 Chloe - AMPS 75

Checking in, since I've been fairly off the board this holiday season. Chloe is doing... okay. It's not her diabetes that's giving her trouble. Her kidneys are going downhill. It doesn't feel slow, but it doesn't feel quick, either. I have started keeping track of bad days vs. good, but we're still probably at 6 good days a week. I don't think we'll hit remission, though. It's also likely she has some form of pancreatitis. Vet seems to think it's mild, and treatment wouldn't really vary from what we're already doing anyway. So we are just taking it one day at a time.

We started seeing a new vet, who has been wonderfully communicative, supportive of how I've been treating her diabetes, and collaborative with the kidney treatment. WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. If you are in the Nashville area and looking for a vet, I highly recommend Dr. Crockett with Cumberland Creek Mobile Vet.

Nice to see a condo from you. I saw on your ss just yesterday she was on an antibiotic for a uti I am guessing. When it’s gone her kidney values might come down. There are food lists for cats with diabetes and ckd. That can help a lot. I’ll give you the link.

I agree with chronic pancreatitis you just treat the symptoms. For Max every vet visit seemed to cause a temporary relapse so I think stress is a big part of it. Also he got it after his best pal left us at the young age of 12. His ckd advanced rapidly as well but chf came on fast and that’s what took him. The ckd only contributed as it limited treatment options.

Thanks for sharing the food list again. She's pretty stubborn in what she will eat. And since we went through the whole rigmarole with trying pretty much every low carb, lowish phosphorous food that Weruva makes and she does't really like pate or shredded chicken, I don't think we'll be trying more. I've ordered some phosphorous binder to hopefully help with that.

The antibiotic is for an assumed UTI. She woke us up in the middle of the night peeing all over the apartment and some of it was bloody. The ER vet couldn't get a sample when we finally got her there, so given her history and symptoms, we're just treating it like it was one rather than leave her there overnight on the chance they could get a sample. She hasn't peed outside the box since, though the quantity is still pretty high. Some days I can tell she just doesn't feel well. Other days are normal.

I'm pretty wiped emotionally, physically, and financially from this past year, so I'm not going to be exploring every course of action for her CKD. It's going to be treating what I can within the means of all those spheres.

With ckd you treat the symptoms. Fluids might be helpful. Max was picky as well with food so I used aluminum hydroxide powder as well.

Bandit is much better! I think the SubQ fluids really helped. She's off all meds (Ondansetron, Famotidine etc). She's eating only HC kibble but I have no expectation of remission or that she will even stop bouncing! I'm glad she is in better spirits though.

I see Chloe is back on Clavamox. Do you want to try a different antibiotic like Zeniquin or Baytril? Maybe she needs a longer course of A/Bs to get rid of the infection? They are gentler on the GI front as well. Could she be having idiopathic cystitis/FLUTD rather than a UTI?

Did your vet mention giving fluids?

I see Chloe is back on Clavamox. Do you want to try a different antibiotic like Zeniquin or Baytril? Maybe she needs a longer course of A/Bs to get rid of the infection? They are gentler on the GI front as well. Could she be having idiopathic cystitis/FLUTD rather than a UTI?

They couldn’t even confirm the UTI at the ER vet, so it’s basically a precautionary measure. It finishes up tomorrow anyway and her vet will be here on Friday to check her blood pressure so we’ll see what next steps are.

There are too many things pulling me in too many directions right now that at an additional procedure is just more than I can handle.

It's possibly FLUTD/IC then. My civvie had it. Was triggered by stress. Glucosamine supplements are supposed to help. Some people use Feliway collars/diffusers also.

I know what you mean. I've been where you are with Bandit, not too long back. Believe me, it's possible that fluids might help with a lot of things and actually make life simpler for you after a while. I was able to get Bandit of all meds and I think it was fluids that helped. Anyway, I don't mean to pile on the pressure!

Hi. Just seeing this tonight. Giving fluids can really make a difference in how your kitty feels and they’re not a very onerous intervention. They really aren’t bad to give. I never thought I could do it years ago when I first learned (many cats ago) but it was so much easier than I thought it would be. And it’s not a very expensive treatment that can really improve kitty’s quality of life.

I am so sorry about the UTI or FLUTD. I hope that clears up!

Ruby refuses to let me give her fluids and it caused me so much angst when I tried, but my cat sitter is a pro at it and he thinks it's an amazing cure for whatever ails a cat. For a while, all he ever did was do subQ for older cats all over our town and he made a good living from it as cash on the side from his vet tech job. Our local vet will administer it for $29 a visit, but taking her to the vet is such an onerous task that I prefer to have him come to our house to do it for $25 a visit. Ruby freezes whenever he picks her up and it's over with in a few minutes because he knows what he is doing. We haven't done it in a while because her kidneys are in great shape now, but it's something that could be done a few times a week that could alleviate dear Chloe's issues.
