Re: 12/5 Tawny Going to Vet!

Desi, this is good that you are taking Tawny to the vet today. Now maybe they'll be willing to help her recover by giving her what she needs for that recovery. We will be thinking of you, sending lots of snowflakes and healing vines, and praying that the vet will listen--really listen--to your concerns.

Lots of hugs,

Ella & Rusty

Beautiful Tawny, I am thinking of you today and hoping that you will be feeling better very soon.
Love from,
Rusty

Re: 12/5 Tawny Going to Vet!

Adapted from my Facebook post:

Damn, double damn, and triple damn. Tawny is back at the ER/specialty hospital, ketotic with severe pancreatitis AGAIN. The vet, Dr. Amanda Taub, is calling Desi next. The vet wanted to call me first because of the money aspect, which DCIN has been handling. I said OK, to get started.

Treatment plan--steroids to reduce the pancreatic inflammation, jugular catheter, constant rate infusion of R insulin, placing an E-tube (feeding tube) if Tawny is strong enough for the procedure. The vet said Tawny looks as bad as she did on the 1st hospitalization. Current estimate is $1500 to $2000. I will set up a chip-in later. I just want to bury myself in denial right now. Tawny is such a love, a big piece of Desi's heart, and a favorite of this ER/Specialty clinic. Why oh why does she continue to get so sick?? ~Venita

Re: 12/5 Tawny Going to Vet!

Oh no, that is not the news we all wanted to hear. Poor Tawny, and poor bean, all are trying to very hard. Paws crossed she turns the corner this time.

Re: 12/5 Tawny Going to Vet!

Venita,
I am so sorry to hear this news. I suspect that the ER clinic itself may be at least partly answerable for Tawny's sharp downturn: they repeatedly questioned (denied?) Desi's requests for fluids and how to administer them; they actually recommended that she decrease the amount of insulin; the question of an e tube was rejected by the clinic at the time--early on-- that an e tube could have done a lot of good. There may be other issues, too, but I am not familiar with all of the medical problems Tawny has or with how to deal with them. (Others here are very knowledgeable and have commented.)

I do so hope that Tawny will recover. Desi is doing her very best.

Rusty and I are continuing to send healing thoughts, prayers, vines, snowflakes, to this beautiful kitty who really needs to catch a break now!

Re: 12/5 Tawny Going to Vet!

Venita:

If there is any means to encourage the vets to give Desi the tools to learn how to administer fluids that would be very helpful. Likewise, they do not seem to like blood ketone testing. Desi had great data that they were ignoring with respect to Tawny's ketone levels. As we all know, blood levels give immediate data vs. urine data which is a snapshot of where things were hours before. Fluids and food are going to be essential. I though Desi had asked about an e-tube before. She knows her cat. Maybe between you and Desi, we can hope the vets will listen a little more closely. (You know how successful Violet was in using these methods with Garland.)

Re: 12/5 Tawny Going to Vet!

Desi called me after she spoke to Dr. Taub. Desi had been sitting in her vehicle in the vet's parking lot, sobbing, too emotional to drive home. I assured her that DCIN would do all we could for Tawny. I asked her to find a diner or fast food joint, wash her face, and get something to eat. To let what is now going on with Tawny to fall from her shoulders. LVRC is taking care of Tawny and DCIN is taking care of the money.

This is Tawny's blog page, which has a chip-in for donations.

On fluid administration. We can teach Desi to do that. I sent her two bags of lactated ringers and the admin lines and needles almost a month ago. I learned to give fluids on the internet; she can learn that way too. I asked Desi to let the vets know about the fluids so that they could make sure that Desi had any needed supplements for Tawny's fluids (like potassium or vitamin B or B12).

DCIN helped to get the blood ketone testing meter from a donor to Desi. (Thank you donor.) DCIN supports blood ketone testing. I will have to find out why the vet doesn't. I do know from having read around the forums (although I haven't paid attention to the particulars) that blood ketones differ in type from urine ketones. But still I would think that elevated blood ketones is a good early warning system.

I spoke to the vet about an E-tube. The vet told Desi that Tawny may not be well enough to insert one today, but that the clinic got the message loud and clear about putting one in as soon as possible. I trust these vets to put in an NG tube if an E-tube isn't possible. But I will ask each and every day about the E-tube.

I asked Desi to talk to Dr. Hebert today, because she will be off tomorrow. Desi said Dr. Hebert takes calls between 4 and 5pm. I likely won't be around then (holiday party for my cancer support group). But I will check in later for Desi's update.

I hope I didn't put out TMI, Desi. But people here know how much you cherish Tawny, and I can't think of a one of us who wouldn't be sitting in our vehicle in the parking lot sobbing. I likely would still be there.

Re: 12/5 Tawny Going to Vet!

Hugs, Desi. So sorry this is happening again. This time you are going to get the tools you need to care for her at home. Please don't worry about the cost - easier said than done, I know!

Again, hugs (((Desi))). Don't forget to take care of yourself!

Re: 12/5 Tawny Going to Vet!

Desi I just wanted to send you a great big hug. You hang in there. if you need a boost let us know. A smile helps refill the heart some. Thinking of you both.

Re: 12/5 Tawny Back in ER Hospital & Really Sick

Sending healing prayers...I know how hard it can be :(

I fully believe the e-tube saved Garlands life with her DKA/FHL. She's had another high ketone scare since then as well. Ketone blood testing, insulin increases, and SQ fluids i gave her brought them back down. Hang in there !! I'm thinking of you ...

No worries here Venita, what you posted was fine. I do cherish Tawny, and I know everyone here understands that firsthand and also hurts right along with me ~ Desi

I talked to Dr. Amanda Traub about a 1/2 hr ago (5pm my time), here's the latest update on Tawny:

Jugular catheter is in, glucose of course is high as are ketones, liver enzymes are elevated, on insulin CRI, on fluids, potassium is low, they are starting her on a low dose of steriods, she is getting electrolytes, she has not vomited again (last time then would be 8 hrs ago at home), she is getting anti nausea med anzanel (sp?) and pepcid.

They are planning to put the etube in tomorrow. She is still very quiet but no worse.

OT (sort of)/FYI: Earlier I went to LVRC's FB page to ck on any Tawny updates there and thought some of you might want to see this info on chicken jerky treats from China that may be causing "symptoms of decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea (with or without blood), increased water consumption and/or urination...seek veterinarian guidance. There have been reports that chicken jerky treats from China may be causing kidney failure or Fanconi syndrome in animals who have consumed these products..." Problems w/Chicken Jerky Treats from LVRC's FB Pg

They also posted the FDA link: http://www.fda/gov.petfoodcomplaints

Tawny had been getting Halo Liv-a-Littles Natural Treats for Dogs and Cats, Freeze-Dried Chicken Breast Protein so I called LVRC and they said those are no problem, that it is ONLY the jerky treats.

Re: 12/5 Tawny Back in ER Hospital & Really Sick - PM Update

((((Desi)))) I'm sorry Tawny is back at the vet again. Hopefully this time they'll get her fixed up for good.

The crying in the parking lot thing - I did the EXACT same thing when Lucy was in the ER. I think I sat out there for an hour, crying and talking on the phone to a friend who understood.

Re: 12/5 Tawny Back in ER Hospital & Really Sick - PM Update

(((((Desi))))) (((((Tawny)))))

Desi, thank you for the update. We are so glad that Tawny is getting all the things that she needs and that she hasn't vomited for a long time. We are also very glad that the e tube will go in tomorrow. I'm sure that will make such a big difference. Violet and Karrie both say so, and they have lots of experience in this area.

Thinking of you both tonight and praying for a good night for Tawny and for you. Please try to get some rest. Vines, snowflakes, prayers, everything, headed your way tonight.
Rusty sends much love to Tawny,

Hugs,

Ella & Rusty
