I just wanted to let you all know that Sid is in the hospital. I feel very responsible for this because I feel like I should have noticed some sign of this before he got so bad. He appeared to be fine. He was eating well and not vomiting more than usual (hairballs). I did not think he was dehydrated. I also checked his bg 3-5 times/day and I was gradually increasing his insulin because of the two hypo episodes he had previously. (No I cannot do any spot checks during the work week. If I go home for lunch which I cannot always do, I may be able to get a +6).
On Wednesday night Sid was projectile vomiting alot of liquid and would not eat his baby food treat or any other food so I knew we had a big problem. I took him to the emergency vet and he was diagnosed initially with ketoacidosis. He has been seen by three different vets and two of them believe that he has an underlying condition such as a kidney infection. One vet keeps asking me if he could have gotten into any poison such as a lily plant or antifreeze. No, there is no way because I don't have any poison in my house. If it were from bad food, one of the other cats would be sick too.
What we are faced with today is that he appears to be in kidney failure, which they said is not related to the ketoacidosis episode. I do not have all of the bloodwork right now but will get it tomorrow morning. When I took him in Wednesday morning, his BUN was 48 and his PCV was 39%. Those are the two numbers I remember. By this morning, his ketone level was down to zero but his BUN was over 100 and his PCV had gotten much worse.
I'm not sure what is going on but I am still in shock and hoping my little buddy pulls through. They are planning to keep him through Sunday.
