I noticed another lump on Butthead last week, on the right side of his neck near his purrbox (same side as the tumor in his ear). Vet could not see him until today. She aspirated the lump, and saw some abnormal cells. The lumpy remains of his ear also seem to have enlarged. Tomorrow morning he gets both lumps removed, and additional biopsies will be done. Don't know yet what will happen, but vet is going to consult with an oncologist regarding chemo/radiation.

Please, send prayers/vines/snowflakes/blizzards or whatever you've got for Butthead, and for me too. I'm already in a rather fragile emotional state, and this is a tough blow. But I will do whatever I can for Butthead.

AAAh MJ....I'm so sorry to hear this news about your beloved Butthead. I hope the report is not what she thinks and I'm so sorry you are not up to your normal shenanigans that we all love. (((MJ)))!!! We are sending tons of healing vines and prayers for Butthead and extra ones for you. You do so much for so many in this group with your amazing sense of humor.

Hoping for a clean path report!!

Some good-ish news: Cosmo's IM vet told me that kitties respond to chemo very differently than humans. Most only need a short course of treatment and most do not have the nasty side effects.

Sending all sorts of vine and snowflakes for a safe and successful procedure tomorrow for Butthead.

Awwwww MJ,

Sorry to read about this. There is nothing worse than when our babies are sick. I'll be sending blizzards and blizzards of snowflakes and healing vines Butthead's way and holding him and you in my thoughts and prayers.

Lots of snowflakes up here and I'm sending a bunch of them to Butthead tonight. MJ I hope that all will go well with the surgery and that follow-up treatments, if they are needed, will be successful. Think positively, as we will. Butthead is in our prayers.

Butthead is out of surgery. I should be able to take him home tonight.
Vet removed the enlarged lymph node, and felt it looked abnormal, but there will also be a biopsy done.
She consulted with a vet at Angell Memorial in Boston and recommended making an appointment with her to begin chemo. She mentioned the drug, but unfortunately it has slipped my mind. It's a pill he'll take every other day for the rest of his life? confused_cat I think it began with an "L", but not Leukeran. Anyway....

ah, already got a callback.
Appointment on Dec. 30.
Just gotta keep moving forward, right?
Anyone here who has experience with this sort of thing, please contact me.

Glad to hear that Butthead is out of surgery and he'll be home soon. Focusing on one day at a time will help you and Butthead. I know you can't wait to get him home. Let us know when you find out more.

Thanks for the update, MJ. I'm glad Butthead is out of surgery and coming home today, sending healing vines for a fast recovery. Moving forward is good, sending prayers for a good response to the chemo. (((MJ)))

Hi MJ and Donovan! I'm just checking out your condo and see that Butthead came out of surgery and should be home with you soon. I'm glad to see that! I have no experience with this what so ever, so no suggestions or information from me. Just loads of healing vines for Mr. Butthead! Yep, taking it one day at a time is a good thing!

I don't have any experience with feline cancers. I know there is an active lymphoma group on yahoo. A lot of members on the feline assisted feeding group are members (have feeding tubes or assist feed through chemo). Maybe someone in the health forum has some suggestions also. Wishing for a speedy recovery.

Just FYI: Kasha was being treated for nasal lymphoma when I lost her. She responded unbelievably well to the chemo - her nasal blockage was reduced dramatically by 18 hours after her first chemo treatment! Our only issues with the chemo were some loss of appetite after some of the drugs - the only oral one she took was the leukeran for a week, but she dealt with it very well. In the end, I lost her to another type of cancer - just felt it was too much to try to tackle both (and possibly a third) cancers at once (which my vet said was very unusual).

But kitties really do handle chemo very well. And, should it turn out to be lymphoma, I have done a lot of research and know that lymphoma responds very well to chemo... Like I said - we had dramatic and positive results very quickly in our case.

Thinking of you and Butthead (it feels strange to type that)...

They said I can pick him up after 7 pm (about an hour from now).
If it is lymphoma, it's unrelated to his ear tumor, says the vet, and she doesn't think lightning would strike him twice like that. But it seems whatever was in his ear is still lurking in him, so theoretically the chemo drugs will keep it at bay.

Aww, MJ. I'm just seeing this. Please give Butthead a little gentle hug from me too.
I will keep you both in my prayers and have faith that the chemo will work wonders for Butthead.

In your situation, I know I'd be a nervous wreck so I'm sending you lots of calming thoughts and wishes.

We got home a little after 8 pm EST. He was still quite dopey, and kinda grumbled a bit when he was being handled, so I gave him his bupe as soon as I could. He spent about half an hour zonked out on my lap sitting on the floor, and then I peeled him off me and placed him into a cat bed nearby. He got up briefly a few times, but doesn't seem to know what to do with himself. That's just as well since I don't want him to kick at his stitches. No funnelhead since some of the stitches are along his neck :-|. I also sat with him for a while with a cold compress on his neck to help with the swelling, as recommended. Everyone else is sniffing the bejeebus out of him, though I don't detect much of a vetty smell on him. They tend to stink much worse when they return from our regular vet, but this place where Butthead went for his surgeries leaves him smelling pretty darn good. I just checked him again a few minutes ago and he's sleeping on the floor in the spare bedroom, which is where he often hangs out anyway. When I touched him, he did a little bit of Happy Feet and purred softly. I was very glad to see that.

No further antibiotics (he had IV during surgery), just bupe every 12 hrs if needed. Biopsy results expected in a week or so. Will try to post a photo soon.

I will now try to catch up on everyone else's condos....

Great update, MJ.

As for experience... I dont' remember Cosmo's oncologist's name, but if you're considering having Butthead seen by a vettybean at Angell, you know I highly recommend Dr. Brum. I know of other cat owners who love Dr Duddy. Both are IM vets, I believe. Dr. Brum's team does a terrific job of coordinating care when your cat needs to see multiple specialists (radiology, oncology, cardiology, etc).

If you go and you want someone to keep you distracted while you wait, let me know!

I was referred to Dr. Carrie Wood.

Butthead normally has a thunderous purr. I was happy that he felt good enough to give a low rumble. But I do want him to lay low for a while and not get into trouble....

This is a quick pic I took right before I left this morning. He's still very sleepy, but he peed and he's eating (note the baby food still stuck to his lips :roll:). He tends to lay down wherever he is and fall asleep, so I put him on the sofa next to Donny and covered him with a blankie.

Awwwwwww the picture of him just melted my heart!!!! What an absolute sweetheart!!!!!! How did you guys decide on his name lol.
Maverick has a nickname - well term of endearment (spelling) which is along similar lines. Wishing him a speedy full recovery.
