AMPS 171

Sheba has been doing really well ...then last night after she had eaten a small amount of her food and I had given her insulin, she started to vomit several times. I tried waiting then giving her a small amount but she just brought it straight back up. Of course it was Sunday night and I had visions of a visit to the afterhours vet for a cerenia inj.
Fortunately my vet had recently given me a script for some zofran which I filled at the chemist. I gave 2 mg to Sheba last night and it seemed to work well. No more vomiting but I fed her very slowly and small amounts. This morning I gave another zofran 2mg as a precaution before AMPS and waited 20 minutes before feeding. She ate willingly but vomited it all back about 10 minutes later ...after her insulin. She was also very uncomfortable, flopping down on the ground and just staying there....very unlike her.
I was able to get an early appt with the vet....they are very good at fitting her in because she is a diabetic.....
Sheba was very tender in the tummy and growled the entire time she was at the vet....very unlike her...but she was obviously in pain. No temp. Looks like it is the pancreatitis rearing its ugly head again.
So vet gave her a cerenia inj and a bupe inj and some subcut fluids. I am to ring back this afternoon if she is no better.
The vet has just moved to new premises...much bigger...and they now have a cat waiting room and a dog waiting room as well as separate rooms for them inhouse.
We have been home from the vet 2 hours and the drugs have kicked in......Sheba is asking for food and not vomiting and is behaving more like her usual self. Hope it continues......

sending prayers.....do you have cerenia tablets at home? I give it to Rico almost every day (they last 24 hours) as prevention-
maybe you can get a script from your vet if they don't carry it--can purchase online.

Thank you Nat, Paula, Jayla, Ella and Carla for your vines and good wishes.
I have my fingers crossed she gets over it quickly. She was fine all day yesterday with no sign of sickness.. she doesn't usually vomit with pancreatitis, she just stops eating, so this is unusual. Normally zofran would have got rid of the nausea and I could probably have managed at home. But she went downhill quickly and I could not stop the vomiting. Also I could not give her the oral tramadol she usually has for the pain she was obviously in because she could not keep it down.
@jayla-n-Drevon. No I don't have cerenia tablets at home.......I should look into getting a script for some. Because vomiting is not usually an issue...just nausea...I have not bothered....silly me!

Sorry about the p'itis. Max would get 8 mg cerenia but usually zofran was what I used. You might want to have some injectable cerenia on hand. It does tend to sting though.

What is the usual dose for cerenia oral.
I used to give Sasha 4 mg and she weighed around 7.5 lbs.

I'm sorry Sheba has p-titis. Nasty illness.

Can you get some Bupe to give at home? Since it's absorbed through the tissue in the mouth, it's less likely to cause tummy upset (although it can, as they swallow some).

Sending loads of healing vines by express air.

OT: My DFIL goes in tomorrow to have a pacemaker installed. The other procedures didn't help him.

Thanks Sandi, Chris and Elise for the vines and kind thoughts.
@tiffmaxee. I remember both you and @Voula told me about zofran and I gave my vet some literature on it as he did not use it. He was then happy to give me a script. I doubt he would give me the injectable cerenia. It is much harder out here to do things like that...unfortunately. Thanks for the dosage of Cerenia...:bighug::bighug::bighug:

@Tricia Cinco(GA) & Harvey
Thanks for the dosing advice. ..Sheba is 6 kg so may need more.
I do have some oral bupe at home but hate it. For some reason Sheba seems to be able to tolerate the injection of bupe but the oral sends her loopy/ very dopey.
Hope all goes well with your DFIL with the pacemaker. I am sorry the other procedures didn't work. The heart is a fickle creature. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

@jayla-n-Drevon . What is the usual dose for cerenia oral. I just looked online and I can get 4 tablets (16 mg) of cerenia for $23.00

:joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful: I understand. I have quite a collection myself.......just not the things I need at the moment!
I give Rico 8mg per dose- (he ranges from 12-14 pounds)
I got some 16mg and some 24 and some 60mg...
The 16 mg are of course easier to cut but the 60mg are the best buy-
I cut in 1/2 and in 1/2 and in 1/2 so it works out to 7.5 mg instead of 8 mg--works just as well.

Here is the link where I got them... http://www.allivet.com/search.aspx?SearchTerm=cerenia
I think it is much less than what you mentioned-
I also have the injectable but Rico no longer gets SQ fluids and it burns like fire--If you give fluids and keep it in the fridge it seems ok as far as not stinging.
I gave it right in the fluid bubble.
He got almost 1/2 cc of injectable.... it is expensive 150$ a bottle

Thanks so much for visiting Julie and for the vines....yes I think she did feel lousy!

@jayla-n-Drevon
Thanks so much for the dosage info. I will have a look at what strengths are available here. Unfortunately we cannot import any animal meds into Australia....and all animal meds here are very expensive.
I don't give Sheba sub cut fluids...she only needs them when she has a p..titis flare.

Thank you Rhiannon, Red and Rover, Les and Wendy for visiting and for the vines. Really appreciated

@Wendy&Neko thanks for the dosing info on cerenia. I thought I was set with the zofran for nausea as Sheba rarely vomits but she proved me wrong this time.:bighug:

@rhiannon and shadow (GA) yes vomiting is a symptom of IBD but Sheba rarely vomits....only if she eats too quickly. She only seems to get nauseated when she has a pancreatic flare and her appetite is normally excellent. My most recent GA cat Maxie had IBD and Sheba has none of his symptoms....thanks for thinking of that though...always good to reassess things.

She has however just had a loose BA.....Part of the p...titis I think....very smelly. Normally no issues in that department unless she has a pancreatic flare.

She seems to be feeling a bit better and is asking for food. Am hoping it continues.

That's a good price. You normally give 1/4 tab every 24 hrs. 1 hour before eating or 2 hrs after. During acute flares you can give more. Smokey started at 30 mgs the first 3 days, then tapered over time to 4 mg daily.

Healing prayers for Sheba and hopefully she will be better very soon. Bron you can give cerenia and zofran together. I have found cerenia better for vomiting and zofran better for nausea but both work for both symptoms. Cerenia is also thought to have a pain relieving effect. You can get cerenia tablets from the vet in the dog version and you cut the tablets to the dose you want. Gentle pats to Sheba and hugs for you too. :bighug::bighug:
