Last night was Mocha's first night on his new diet. We are trying 50/50 boiled chicken and FF. This would be a 'modified' version of the diarrhea diet my vet would normally prescribe. She wanted me to mix in white rice or plain mashed potato, but I am not going to do that.

Question: Maybe rice water would be a workable compromise? I used it for a little while last week and was worried it was sending his BG's up. Would that be an accurate assessment :?:

We are still doing the clay and I am getting the probiotic today. I saw a recommendation for cat grass in the health forum, so maybe I will start some seeds today.

We have switched over completely to the OneTouch because I am out of test strips for the GE. I want to use up these expensive test strips, but then I am going to go buy the Relion and use the GE as my back up (also a inexpensive meter). My mom will just have to learn to like another meter  Good numbers this morning though, today is curve day. He was so much trouble this morning with his AMPS that I am not looking forward to the rest of the day. But maybe he was just hungry this morning.

I have heard the vets suggest feeding things like plain hamburger and rice or potatos to dogs with the runs, because it is a 'bland' diet and supposed to be easier to digest. I'm not sure how many carbs rice water would have, but I do know that you are supposed to soak rice in water before cooking it to get rid of some of the starch...so that sounds like rice water would have alot of carbs? Either way, I personally would skip it as I don't believe it has a necessary purpose for your kitty troubles. I have heard people on here using pumpkin.
My cat is also a maniac for the first test, and I am sure it's because he's hungry  Every test after seems almost boring!
Have a great day :-D

I'm not sure about the rice water (I don't have any experience with it), but hopefully the new modified diet will help settle Mocha's digestive system down.

We used the One Touch when Trix was first diagnosed. The price of those strips nearly drove us into the poor house! The Relions are good, and very affordable. I know use the Arkray Vital, which is similar to the Relion, but maybe even a bit cheaper...but you do have to mail order the strips from American Diabetes Wholesale. They have a deal, though...250 strips for about $45!

Good luck with the curve. Trix can be extra wiggly before breakfast, but then settles for her other tests. Hopefully Mocha will do the same. Have a great day!!

Don't panic...that's not a dangerous number, although a little unusual for that part of the cycle

However, China's been on this dance for awhile and she started at 84 this morning and now's at 233 so it's just wonky number day

Even if it was a bounce, bounces aren't an emergency...they just take time to clear and all we can do is hang on for the ride...they can take up to 72 hours to clear

Emergencies are the LOW numbers, like under 50..or the first time you get a low number and aren't sure what to do. High numbers take a lot of time to do the damage to their organs...it's the low numbers that kill quickly

There are 2 things that can cause bouncing.

1 is a lower number that Mocha's liver isn't used to seeing. Our sugarcats bodies are "used to" high numbers, so when they drop lower, the liver panics and sends out hormones and sugars to bring it back up to what IT thinks is "normal"....as they get better regulated, the liver has to re-learn what normal is so the bounces get less crazy and clear faster

2 is if you have a large drop in numbers...like if you went from 428 to 288 in a couple hours, that's a pretty significant drop and can get Mr. Liver all upset again

While it's frustrating, when you think about it, it's a necessary evil. In the wild, if their blood glucose went too low, the liver was there to "protect" them from death by bringing it up...It doesn't know that we WANT those lower numbers...it's just doing it's thing

Edited to add...In answer to your question, he only dropped 82 points from his AMPS to the +3...that's not a big drop, but with a new diabetic like Mocha, anything is possible. But again, all any of us can do is hold on for the ride...Our kitties are in control of the rollercoaster :-D

I haven't had time to read back on your adventure so far, but what I see at this point is you need to get more testing in, especially at night since most cats do drop lower at night.

Getting a +2 and then a "before bed" test will be helpful in figuring out what Mocha might be doing overnight...also, if you get a lower number at your bedtime, you'll know you need to set an alarm to get up later (yes, those 2, 3 and 4 am tests are a blast..NOT...lol)

Since you're home today, it looks like you're doing a mini-curve (every 3 hours)...that's great and will help fill in some of the questions about where he's going during the cycles. Hopefully you'll be able to get some more testing in during the PM cycle tonight too!
