I want to thank everyone for their comments, suggestions, and advice in yesterday’s discussion on meters. Because of questions raised (thank you Rosalie) about the validity of the Free Style Lite meter, last night we got a Relion Micro. For her PMPS test we used both meters. When I saw 363 my heart just sank. The FSL reading was 237. It turns out Weezer has not been flat yellow all along, but flat pink, likely sprinkled with reds. The irony of it is, when I first found this forum I was using the FSL and saw references to the Relion Micro, so I purchased one at that time. But when the reading was so different from what we had been getting on the FSL I returned as defective! But reality is what it is and sometimes it plain sucks! :cry:

Good morning Linda! So sorry about the pink. Now you know on the meter, and you can move forward. :sad: Hope Weezer comes down for you today!!

Someone has probably already told you this, but ADW has the Arkay strips which work in the Relion meter for much cheaper.

Hi Linda, so sorry about it all with the meters. That is quite a difference between the two meters. Thank goodness for Rosalie calling attention to the FS meter. I have the Relion Micro as my back-up and really like it. When I get a number I'm unsure of on the AT, I use the Relion Micro to compare. Give Weezer some scritches from us and hugs to you.

I know it's disappointing to see the higher numbers with the Relion. However, the good news is that now you know, and you can move forward and get to a dose that works for Weezer. He isn't flat, he has a curve, it's just higher than what you want to see. Chin up, he will get there!

I have a question about the FSL strips....are you using the new style strips (that "target the blood"...they sip from the sides of the strip) or the old style strips (that sip from the end)? I know I saw people comment last year that the old style strips were inaccurate. I have the new style strips, and my meter is accurate. I'm curious if this could be a strip issue?

:YMHUG: meters can be so frustrating. I have an old basic Maxima and they came out w/ a new model w/ all the bells and whistles. It was consistantly off too. There seems to be a consissul for the Relion though so I would trust that.

Our FSL strips sip from either side, so must be new kind.

I would call the company and report the issue. Since it appears (at least to me) that some of the meters are accurate, reporting it will do 2 things.....it will make the company aware of the problem, maybe they will issue a recall if it is widespread enough, and secondly, they may (should!) send you a new meter...hopefully it will be an accurate replacement. Just don't tell them it's for a cat, they most likely will blow you off if you do.

Can you return the strips?

I know seeing that number feels awful. This is an emotional mental adjustment to make.

Take one meter & stick with it...I had tried a lot of them..settled on one, & thats what we use..

Hi Linda

Bummer on the FSL. I use it, too, and yesterday did one of Rusty's tests with both it and the Relion micro. It was during one of Rusty's higher BG periods and the Freestyle read 212, whereas the Relion read 261. Rosalie's data seem to suggest that the higher numbers of BG read too low on the FSL, and that is certainly confirmed by your experience today. Every time I have tested myself with both meters I have gotten very similar numbers, but of course the numbers are always under 100. A conundrum. I'm sticking with the FSL for now because I don't want to deal with this issue while away from home with numbers that are not always typical.

Anyway, good luck. Do you have test solution for both meters?

Linda, yes, this meter thing is truly confusing and depressing at times. It is strange that when I test all three of my meters on myself, they are only a few points higher or lower, but when I test on Simon, there are huge discrepancies. I guess that is because my numbers are so much lower?? Well, at least we are all in this together!
 
Please note that you can not get a comparison of meters if you are not diabetic and fluctuate your BG. All of the meters will give similar results in the normal range. It is only because I can manipulate my BG that I was able to make comparisons in all BG ranges from 50-350. Also, if you are going to compare on a kitty, you need to do severl tests, not just one with the meters you are comparing. My FS will be closer to other meters once in a while but I would say 10% of the time. I have had 2 FS meters replaced, all with the new strips and all meters are giving similar results. There may be a problem in the strips and certain lot numbers may be effected. We know abbott recalled tons of their strips last year. So who knows but I will check with them and ask about their quality control and if they use type 1 diabetics on insulin for their actual testing of the meters.

Linda, hang in there. I have been thinking Morgaine was regulated well and now we start from scratch. Very frustraing!

Just wanna send you big hugs, Linda. You have a very, very positive attitude and I appreciate it every single day you come on Gracie's condo with your wonderful humor.

Yes....this is disturbing and demoralizing. But now you know and like Roni said "be the tank"....I know you can; you always are. YOU are doing great!
 
((((Linda)))) hang in there since I am sooo frustrated about this meter issue since for a long long time I thought Do Lou was doing well but was baffled over the peeing and drinking my only regret was not comparing my meters sooner sigh.............. happy you got another meter since I at this time do not feel like we can trust the FSL with our cats
