Just another typical day in our house...yucky numbers, a trip to the vet...nothing out of the ordinary.

This is Trix's 6th cycle on this dose; I guess I'll raise her yet again tomorrow morning if we see no change. I'm going to try and get her to the vet after Thanksgiving, to give her the once-over in case something else is causing this insanity. She is still behaving completely normally...spunky, appy is normal, LB is normal, etc. :YMSIGH: .

What are the chances that this pen is bad? It's only a couple weeks old...but has anyone ever started out with insulin that was toast from the get-go?

Frankie's vet visit was semi-inconclusive. She was obviously uncomfortable when the vet tried to palpate her abomen. They snapped an x-ray, and everything looked pretty much normal; no blockages and no major back up of stool. One of her anal glands was pretty full, so they expressed it. They tried to draw urine, but of course she was empty, so I have to try and get a sample at home. Woohoo. I did catch her trying to poop in the box this morning; all she produced was a hard little pellet. She tried a second time; nothing, and when she jumped out of the box, she did some scooting. They gave her some fluids to try and help move things along, and we're starting her on Miralax as well. So, we're basically in a holding pattern for now.

Gotta head to work...will visit condos as I can today and this evening!

Re: 11/19 Trixie AMPS 260 +2 313 +4 245 - Frankie update

((((AMY)))) I actually just threw out a pen that was two weeks old and started a new one today because I was wondering the same thing. At least she is feeling good. Wish there was an easy answer.

Hope you figure out what is up with Frankie. It is good to know there is no blockage. Could an anal gland cause that? I don't have experience with cat glands, but Charlie has to have his expressed a LOT or he becomes very uncomfortable.

Have a good day at tbp and I hope a restful evening!!

Trixie, what is up with the nasty +2 spikes? (((((((Amy)))))) Frustrating isn't it? Especially when they are feeling good and acting normal.

I really thought that we had another bad pen on our hands earlier this week too, but once my dad bought the vial and used it for a couple of days i knew the pen wasn't bad. But who knows? When i called the Costco pharmacist (where i buy my pens) to ask about pens going bad, all he said was "it happens" and "bring it back if you're unsure and we'll give you a new one" but at no time did i say it was for Leo, so who knows what'll happen when i bring it back.

So is Frankie constipated? Geez when it rains it really pours doesn't it? I hope things settle down at your place soon.

Hi Amy, I guess that is a possibility with the pen. It will be interesting to watch her numbers once you change the dose if you still use the same pen. I hope the Miralax helps Frankie move along, and good luck with catching a urine sample. I've not had to do that yet, as I've been lucky with Maggie at the Vet and getting a sample. I sure hope they can come up with some answers for sweet Frankie. Sending her some vines and scritches from me and Maggie and for Trixie, too, and her numbers.

I sure hope Frankie starts feeling better and Trixie gets back to the numbers I used to secretly envy!! Champ started his day off at 371!! Just like Trixie, he acts like he feels terrific. In fact, I haven't seen him this active in a long time. I know our insulin is okay because he does hit green every once in a while. Don't you wish that FD was more predictable....if you do this, this will happen! Oh, well. Just keep pluggin' away, I guess!

I have to work today, too, though I bet you'll have more fun at your job!!

We've never had a pen that was toast from the outset, but whenever you lose regulation for no apparent reason, the insulin being toasty is one possible cause. It wouldn't hurt to open new insulin....I would try that if I were in your shoes.

Re: 11/19 Trixie AMPS 260 +2 313 +4 245 - Frankie update

I called the Target pharmacy today to discuss the possibility of the pen being bad; unfortunately I've got to call back on Monday to speak to the pharmacy manager.

We still have her previous pen...I'm toying with the idea of giving it a whirl since I won't be able to get a new pen till Monday, and we're around to monitor tonight and tomorrow. Her numbers were getting a tad higher on the old pen, but all heck broke lose shortly after starting the new pen. Obviously, I don't know if it's a coincidence or not...but, if I can get them to exchange the current pen for a new one, it sounds like a good starting point. I guess if they won't swap it for me, I'll just buy a new pen all together.

Of course I know Trixie isn't the only one in this boat...losing regulation, not getting better numbers despite increases, so it's probably unlikely that the insulin is the issue...but who knows...

Thank you for all the well-wishes for Frankie. She's basically feeling/behaving 100%...just having these bouts of LB issues. More frustration...ah well, that's life. We've gotten through so much already, we can get through this one, too. Hopefully the miralax is the overall answer.

Re: 11/19 Trixie AMPS 260 +2 313 +4 245 - Frankie update

Hi Amy:

I hope Frankie will be able to poo soon and feel better. Poor girl...sending her healing vines.

I often wonder on pens as well. Gracie is high for really no apparent reason....she has gotten green on the dose she was on so I just upped her but if she stays high, the pen will be the next thing to change before I raise her again. I can understand you being suspect since Trixie has always done so well.

Sending you all hugs and caring thoughts. HOpe work is good for you today.

Re: 11/19 Trixie PMPS 261 +2 159

Ok, so obviously she heard me speculating about whether or not the insulin was bad. It's nice to see a touch of blue...no doubt, a bounce will follow.

Re: 11/19 Trixie PMPS 261 +2 159

We'll take it!!! Maybe no bounce....you hear that Trixie Cat...no bounce.

Loved her pic in the calendar. Sweet girl!

Re: 11/19 Trixie PMPS 261 +2 159

Thank you Marje! We think she's awfully cute and sweet. But then again, so is every cat here! I've reached a point where I feel like each and every one is part of my family...and, I get all misty-eyed when I look at the calendar!

Re: 11/19 Trixie PMPS 261 +2 159

Nice blue Trixie! :-D Looks like your pen might be ok. I switched out my pen and meter today. I was really grasping for anything. Who knows which made a difference or if it was operator error or stress. I wish there was an easy answer. Glad to see she is going lower though!! You deserve a break. Hope the miralmax does the trick for sweet Frankie. I love the new calendar as well. All of lil T's friends and our "family.". Have a glass of wine and relax tonight Amy!

 ...this is the lowest number we've seen in weeks. Maybe I won't have to battle it out with the pharmacist after all??
