one thing that can guide you in how often to test in any given cycle is to do a +2, if it's about the same, then you're headed for an "active" Lantus cycle. The "new to the group" sticky has a chart on what that might look like, although the nadir might not be exactly at +6. You'll know he's passed the nadir when the numbers begin to rise. Many people look at the speed of the drop and figure out how many points per hour it is. Once you know Frank's patterns you'll be able to predict about when he usually hits the nadir.
for example, say tonight's preshot is 350 - if you see a 250 at +2, that says he's definitely dropping this cycle and the rate at that point is 50/hr. you might decide to check again hourly until you see a 100 at +5, then go to every 30 minutes. that's just a random example, but it gives you an idea.
as you go along, people will be able to help you see what's going on. you can always post and ask when you should test next.
