So is this panicky liver something that's going to always happen, or does the liver learn to accept the lower numbers eventually?

Remember it can take up to 72 hours to clear a bounce, but looking at last night it appears he already did. His numbers came back down.

So now you should start seeing a normal drop, nadir, normal rise to next shot. Let him settle in at this dose for a bit. It will help train his liver.

Don't you think he bounced again last night? At +12 he was 223, then a half hour later he was at 429. Will it take another day or so to come back down from that one? I'll test him before he eats at +5. maybe things will look more normal today! How did attie's fructosamine test come back?

claudia to answer your first question about will this happen forever...no.
whenever there is a first time drop from consistent long time highs...panic.
the push is for the body to become accustomed to the 'normal' or close to normal #'s and there begins the lack of panicky liver. in your case you may be in for a series of bounces.
charlie has never been easy to manage in the sugar dance, why should he start now?

if you fed at +5 this is a pretty good number. not coming down necessarily...but also not really going up. these kind of balanced numbers right now are actually good for charlie.

Actually, no I don't think that was a bounce. At +12 it could have been a combo of several things. Food, insulin wearing off, late nadir...and they all combine to 'appear' to be a whoosh...bounce.

Relax a little bit. He needs time to settle into these numbers and dose. As far as I know PZ doesn't shoot the overlap, so when he runs out of insulin...up he goes....quickly. This is where the low carb foods etc. can help in minimizing the intensity of the rise. I would look to feed low-low carb as main meals, then his snacks in the 5-7% carb range.

It is exciting to see these numbers though!!!

Attie's fructosimine test came back at 478....poorly regulated. Which we knew it wouldn't be a stellar report, my meter has him at 289. Which the 478 translates to around 300. (why we say the fruct. test is generally a waste of money our meters can give us better results), It was what we were expecting with all his troubles as of late.

The doctor wants to put him on Royal Canin Intestinal, but it is 25.5% carbs. I called Royal and asked, but we may not have much of a choice. The other option is sending him to a specialist $$$$, which if I don't get any pet sitting jobs soon...will be totally out of the question!

As Dr. Price explained, with his tummy this messed up he isn't getting the right nutrition. And we have nowhere to go. She feels backed into a corner. Bless her heart she is at least honest! It is why I like her so well. I'm supposed to get back with her on Monday and let her know which way...I'm thinking specialist because even the exclusion diet of venison hasn't really seen significant improvement.

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about attie! That's pretty crummy that he may need such high-carb food. It seems like its tough to treat all of his ailments at the same time. I wish I was going on vacation- I'd hire you to sit my kitties in a heartbeat!

+7:279. Still holding pretty steady. I'm glad that he didn't shoot right up. This looks promising.

Crossing my fingers for Charlie....

Edit #2:

So you can see from the Relion meters we don't need a fruct. test. WE already know.

Edit:

Attie will be OK... he will get the care he needs...on way or another. He is well loved not only by me...but by many folks at the Berea ARF. Even though he is mine now...there are "aunts and uncles" who are pulling for his best. I truelly love and respect the work Berea ARF does.

I'm gathering the vet is suspecting Inflammatory Bowel Disease with Attie? I have an IBD kitty and there are many other unique food sources other than venison. My IBD can't can't handle venison well, does okay with duck and rabbit as long as there isn't any grain/vegies in it. Right now we're trying some quail to see how that goes.

IBD is a disease that you treat the same whether you suspect it or you "know" it. You can do the ultrasound/endoscopy/colonscopy route but the result is almost always the same, steroids (preniSOLOne and diet change). If this is indeed the case for Attie, you might want to join the IBD Yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/felineibd1/).

And, out of curiosity, if it isn't IBD that your vet is suspecting....what does s/he suspect?

Pmps:483, 4u.
Yucky ending number, but at least I don't need to get a late test in...always looking on the bright side.
