Susie not doing very well since last night. Seems uncomfortable and is not eating well. She is back on the buprenorphine this morning and may have to go back to Mirataz (1/2 dose). She is licking her lips again so she may be nauseous. She may also be constipated. I have seen a lot about this issue but don't remember what natural (or medical) remedies to try. How often should a cat have a bowel movement (or poop)? Does anyone know if bupre causes constipation? It is a pretty strong pain med.

Just posted on Facebook's Raw Feeding for IBD Cats site about getting an easy-to-make, small, home cooked recipe. I do not have a fancy blender and do not want to deal with bones. I tried ground beef with EZ Complete once and she wouldn't touch it. I should have done the transition so maybe that is why she didn't eat it.

Bama routinely has constipation. Natural remedies include: canned pumpkin [make sure label says 100% pumpkin], psyllium husk powder is what I am currently using. Slippery elm may be helpful but I am not sure it addresses constipation. Egg yolk helps with motility and you can get egg yolk lecithin in capsules you sprinkle on the food although I'm not sure that is for constipation exactly. It is supposed to help with hairballs. Does Susie have hairballs? This recent weather change with first cool, fall-like weather a couple weeks ago and now warmer humid weather seems to bring on the hairballs for Bama. Seems he goes through it around this time every year.

I posted a link to Amazon for the psyllium husk powder I use for Bama. The company is It's Just! I got it for around $10 for 10 oz. It's promoted as non-GMO, keto friendly, low carb and ideal for baking. I use 1/8 [or just under] teaspoon twice per day after working up to it from just a few sprinkles. Add it with a few teaspoons of water to her food and stir well as it does not really dissolve. I use a little more pumpkin up to a teaspoon full as he likes the pumpkin but either gets tired of it or it starts to taste old after being refrigerated a few days. I use pumpkin myself in my oatmeal with some frozen OJ concentrate to sweeten it up a bit. Great way to get some vitamins C & A or beta carotene. If you don't think you'll use it for yourself, you can freeze it in ice cube trays but that does change the texture when it thaws.

Start conservatively as you can always add more. A not so natural but effective treatment is Miralax. I prefer to go the natural route but have used Miralax for quicker results. I did threaten Bama with some Miralax late yesterday but he came through with a nice little log in his litter box so I didn't have to carry out the threat.

I get worried about Bama's constipation sometimes and the thought of what your JoJo went through is unnerving. I'd feel better if I knew what to get if Bama gets in a similar situation. Thanks!

I started reaching out to our vet a long times ago about Dolly licking her lips. In Dolly’s case it seems to be due to a runny nose, her congestion being a constant. How do you know the why except to look at other signs like not wanting to eat or vomiting. I discussed the possible side affects of the Bupe like addiction, constipation, with her vet. I was told cats do not become addicted like humans. Dolly has been getting it every day for quite a while without any signs of constipation. She poops every day and if her stools are on the hard side and because her poop can build up in her anal sac, I will give her Miralax, but rarely. Also the amount of water they get is so important. Dolly is a great water drinker, I know Susie is not. Adding water to their food is a plus. Dolly turns her nose up to soupy . I hope the vet has answers for you regarding a possible diagnosis and treatment based on the ultrasound results. I know you must feel like you were left out in the dark . Many hopes for answers and prayers to you both.

Hi Gina YES it was terrible My vet told me to get Pedia-Lax for children 2 to 5 it was very easy for me to give JoJo by myself He started going everywhere in about 10 minutes Unfortunately he did have a bad reaction to it ,the ER vet said some Kitties do but he is doing good now THank you GOD!! GOOD LUCK Instacart delivered it to me from CVS within 2 hours@Bama Kitty Mom

Summer - hello

Tina had to have a manual extraction over a year ago, after two failed enemas at the vet's office. Part of her problem is the damage to one hip and spinal arthritis (Adequan for canines is a Godsend; she walks almost normally now, and even runs a little and jumps).

I give egg yolk powder, SEB (soothes tummy but has to be given two hours apart from any other med), fish oil (Nordic Naturals Omega 3 for pets), and yes, Miralax (a little less than 1/8 tsp twice a day). She goes every single day, and I know what hers looks like. We go several days with no issues, but every now and then, she defecates on the tile. From that, I decide how to alter the dose. I added all those things over time, but some cats have luck with just one choice, like the egg powder or fish oil or pumpkin. Tina eats Weruva, and several of those have pumpkin in the recipe.
I highly doubt Susie would need so much "help" (what I add) at this point!

A BIG thing (for Tina, maybe) is that I want to try psyllium husk in place of the Miralax. I can't remember my reason for not trying that sooner . . . it might be too much for certain conditions (?). I'll look into that again.

Food Fur Life is a respected company that sells the EZ Egg Yolk . . . it makes the fur extra soft too. Most of the time, my pets don't mind it mixed in their food. It helps eliminate hairballs, and that is why I started it. It is also supposed to support cognitive function (oh gee, maybe I should start it, lol). I order online directly through Food Fur Life.

Slippery Elm Bark coats and soothes the digestive system, smells nice, and again, I get by with mixing in food. I buy a bottle of the Now brand - 400mg capsules. I empty a capsule into a very small bowl, and mix with a couple tsps of water, then divide into 8 servings and refrigerate (it might go bad after 5-6 days). Tina gets 2 servings per day, and I have just started my civvie (IBD or SCL) on it. Never give within 2 hours of meds, or med might not be as effective.

Tina was on Metacam for over a year - worked well, but I was so glad I finally got the Adequan and got her off Metacam!

Congrats on the poop Susie! Those are great to do girlie, on a regular basis

OH - maybe to help potential nausea . . . elevate Susie's food bowl about 4 inches!

Maybe I should try the EZ Egg Yolk, too. I could use a little help with the cognitive function as well! Sounds like there is nothing you won't do "cat mamma". The Slippery Elm Bark routine sounds tiring. How in the world do you divide water in to 8 parts? Do you put them in a little weekly (only 7 parts) pill container in the fridge? What about the Adequan? Are you doing the muscular injections on Tina? I'll bet Tina has some choice words (growls) for you after that. Molly Pop does not like the injections. I have to have my Mom put a spoon of peanut butter in front of her to keep her mind off the shot until she is jolted. Pretty long needle. Your civvie has IBD or SCL? I might have to follow up with you on that later. Right now I just want to discuss poop.

I got a small sample packet of the EZ Complete, from Food Fur Life, when I briefly thought about trying to transition Susie to home cooked meals. She didn't want anything to do with it with her cooked ground beef. I will remember where you got it, with the help of the EZ Egg Yolk for my cognitive function, in the future.

You can get the store brand of Miralax. I hear it works just as well. I just pinch a little out of my mom's supply and she will only buy the expensive name brand. She's none the wiser as I don't give it to Bama very often--don't want him hooked on laxatives.

Katherine uses pre-ground meats. You know, if Susie doesn't like raw, a lot of people will lightly cook their cat food.

Great idea about the hot tea (which is my "go to" when I have a cough or sore throat -- I have a giant bag of Organic "Inner Bark" Slippery Elm from Frontier Herb -- I don't think I'll ever use it up. I don't know if a lot of people know that it is amazing for heart burn!

Hi Summer. I logged on this evening just to check up on Susie. Busy day. I'm sorry she had a rough start today. Bupe can be constipating, but Susie hasn't been getting that much lately or consistently. Cerenia can be a little constipating according to my vet and Zofran can be constipating (Ondansetron) but you haven't used that yet -- it's very good for nausea though. Hugs. I should get some oat grass for Bama. Since he became an indoor only cat 5 years ago I'm sure he misses his nips of grass. Long before he became diabetic he used to love to lick the dew off grass and shrubs in the mornings and drink water from any puddles he could find and the drips from the hose and downspouts after a rain. I wasn't too thrilled about that.

Hi Summer, I did get elevated food and water bowls for Dolly mainly for her spine issues. I don’t see anyone mention this but I make Dolly oat grass from a Kit from Amazon. It helps with nausea and constipation. Dolly never has hair balls. I swear by it for my all of the kitties I’ve had. Dolly is chomping at it throughout the day. I’ve never read anything negative about it. I hope Susie starts feeling better again soon. You are getting some wonderful caring advice. Sending prayers for you both.

I am still afraid to buy oat grass for my cats - for fear they will vomit it back up. All my outdoor cats used to eat grass and vomit it back (that was decades ago when I actually let my cats go outdoors before losing one to Lyme disease).

Good luck with the cat grass Summer. I used to get the wheat grass at the market. It came in a small sized plant containers from the produce dept. I got it that way for many years until it came home with gnats It takes a couple days to grow but it’s so easy, just add water.

The grass will keep growing, you have to water it, and will need to be replaced with a new kit. There are a ton of choices but I like the cost of this one. I always try to have a new one started while she has one to graze on. I have it on auto ship every two weeks. I get two each time. I am sure there is a cheaper way to do this, buy a bag of the seeds and have a little container to grow it in. Lets first see how Susie takes to it and then I would be happy to research this for both of us.
