Good Morning LL Friends,

We're hard on the "collecting data" trail pc_work as we look for "that regulating dose" and a rhythm in our food plan that works for both of us. Not that I'm planning to go but I'm thinking its pretty cool that I can send Gandolf's SS to our vet when needed or even just to send it to them for an update on Gandy. They'll certainly get a good picture of what's going on thanks to our supportive friends here.

From your SS, it sounds like you've been introduced to the concept of mini-meals. Generally, if you're going to use that strategy, you want to be giving the bulk of food prior to nadir when Gandolf's insulin is at it's most active. When you feed within that period is mostly a matter of trial and error to find out what works best for your cat. You might want to try feeding at pre-shot, +2 and +4 as a place to start. Many of us will use a timed feeder if we are going to be out of the house or incorporate snacks that are in the middle of the night.

Great start for Gandolf today.

nice isn't it when you can take all that data to your vet. Mine loves it when I do. It helps them see just what Mannie is up too. Works out well for both of us. YAY!, and happy data collecting!

Hi Cee....welcome to LL! I am wondering the date of Gandolf's diagnosis....you started out with Lantus, right?
does Gandolf have any other medical conditions or meds? What meter are you using?

I see you have your SS up and running and you have linked the previous condos to your first posts of each day...excellent job! :mrgreen: Since we have a lot to think about with this FD, and we realize that our kitties are a lot more than just their BG numbers, we have a devised a short cut to explaining their overall health and well being. We watch for 5 Ps in each day and then make a mention of it in our condos. We might say something like" All Ps in place today" or "4 Ps so far" still missing the playing or something like that.
P=Purring
P=Peeing
P=Preening
P=Pooping
P=Playing
Now, my two are 13 so we don't see the P for Playing all that much, but I do watch for all the others. No pooping is a concern and if they aren't purring it means something is wrong. We watch the Whole Cat and give our WCR whole cat report of the day....
You are welcome to visit other condos to say hello and see what is going on in our little community with the other kitties... :mrgreen:

Thank you for the feeding and WCR info. I did read in one of the post about an automatic feeder and it did catch my attention. Also, someone posted about some "freeze dried chicken treats" they're give their sugarkitty. Where does one find these tools and treats? Also, are there kibbles that qualify for true food out there and if so, would that be a good idea to leave out for Gandolf to free feed on?

Also, WCR: I know I need to create a profile for Gandolf. I'd love to have that listed on the "signature" (I think that's what I'm talking about) listed at the bottom of each post. Just a matter of time and know-how. Even now have to check out and run.

Lantus right from the start
Started on the Contour Meter (thanks to the Newbie Kit) and now use the ReliOn Ultima (keep the Contour for a back-up, a $ thing; plus I find it easier to navigate in the ReliOn).

No other known medical conditions. The vet did do blood work and an x-ray; there was no renal failure or other indicators in the blood work during the crisis he went through, but I don't remember if the vet said he experienced ketoacidosis (spelling?) at that time or not. He was terribly ill, and in the hospital on I-V over that weekend, and they got him onto the insulin.

Thank you for all the guidance. We're at +2 right now and I'm going to go feed the boy...he's hanging on my shoulder butting me telling me he's hungry. Good timing.

the low carb freeze dried treats are available at most pet stores, plus Walmarts

-->The PetSafe 5 compartment auto feeder available online or at PetSmart stores, and you can use wet food in these too.

-->If you must use dry kibble, Evo and Wellness are the best choices, I believe (someone can correct me on that if I'm wrong)they are about 7%, but you will have to keep in mind the carb % when you use these.

-->To create a Profile, see this link and it will give you the details plus directions and links to the TECH forum: Who's Your Kitty? takes a little time, it would be something you can work on when you have free time.

-->You can post your story about Gandy's adventures in your daily condo when ever you like. Even better, you can add it to your signature, using Google Documents. Visit the TECH forum for help on that, there's always someone in there to help out with techie stuff.

My Walmarts doesn't carry the freeze-dried treats. My two like Pure Bites and if you can find a pouch in a local petfood place, that would be great to try. I order my online and order quite a few altogether.... I use only the freeze-dried chicken and sprinkle it on top of the food. (I found that once they knew I had this stuff they would not let me rest until I put it on top of each and every meal. It is seriously like kitty crack or something...so just be warned...)
They do like real chicken at any time too.... :razz:

LOL!! My Walmart's do! Up here in Canada anyway, they call them PureSnacks, same packaging too. :lol:

I have learned so much here today. Really, such very pertinent info for a newbie and what can I say. You guys must do it a hundred times. Thank you for it once again. And it's true, I've read ALOT of info this last week, (I'm dreaming it!). But to hear it here so personally addressed, it gives me such peace in working with my kitty. (He really ain't no kitty - he's 16 lbs and not fat. Maybe that's why he eats a can and 1/2, do you think?).

Thank you Ronnie and everyone else who answered my questions. I'm even changing his litter box set up from reading here. Amazing.
