Last condo

It's been so busy at work, I never even got around to posting a condo yesterday. Little Iris is still not wanting to eat. She ate a few bites on Wednesday night, but that was it. She is refusing to even try anything on her own. After talking to her vet yesterday, we have added an appy stimulant. I am still giving fluids (since she is also not drinking on her own) and I am syringe feeding her for now. I picked up some AD food from the vet.

This morning, she actually walked up to the food bowls and sniffed them - she didn't eat, but I will take that as a good sign. She still got a Cerenia injection yesterday, but doesn't seem nauseous today (no more drooling, lip smacking). I wish I knew what happened. Her incision looks great. She doesn't seem to be in pain (and she is still on pain meds - just in case). Her breathing isn't any worse than it was before. They have taken x-rays and done an ultrasound. All perfectly normal. Maybe the anesthesia was just too much for a body to handle.

She has been extra sweet and cuddly and has now taken to sleeping under the covers even with me. Her sister Flora is starting to get pretty desperate with her best buddy out of commission. She has been trying to get everyone else to play with her, but none of my big boys have any desire to race around the house at top speed, flying over furniture and jumping from cat tree to cat tree.

Mandarin has been doing a great job working the 3 units and has made it to the lagoon every day for the last three days. I just wish that he would even out a bit. Right now, he bounces to the 300s during the day and then takes a dive in the middle of the night, only to go back up the next morning. Walter spent the day on the beach yesterday.

I'll try to catch up on some condos. Luckily, I'll be home for another two hours before I have to run to campus. Another busy day today and then I have to finish up a grant over the weekend.... and all I want to do is take a nap wit this little girl:

I was worried about you all yesterday and kept looking for a condo but figured it's all been a little much. Have you thought about stopping the pain meds for a day or so? Just wondering if they are making her loopy and suppressing her appy. My heart breaks looking at that picture, she certainly doesn't look happy. Boys please surf safely and take care of your sister. Sending extra feel better vines and prayers for little Iris and :bighug::bighug::bighug: for you.

I have debated the same thing... but part of me thinks that she is still uncomfortable based on how she is laying. The picture shows her typical sleeping position right now, and to me that reminds me so much of Mandarin when he pancreatitis. I wish she could tell me what's going on.

...and everyone else is being extra sweet with their baby sister. I'm so glad that I have such a nice group of cats.

Poor baby. Some kitties are so sensitive to everything. It is an interesting ideas that the pain meds could be contributing at this point. If she's loopy from the meds, she may get "bed spins" if she tries to put her head down. Continued prayers from us....it does sound like she's making some very teeny tiny kitten steps forward...

Poor little Iris.
If she is dehydrated she won't want to eat; I know you are giving her fluids have you tried feeding her soon after giving fluids?

What surgery did Iris have?
She got spayed and they checked for a polyp while she was under (and didn't find one).

I keep her pestering her with food every hour or so when I am home... I just wish I could leave food out at all times, but I know one of the other would eat it. They love their little sister - but they also love their food.

Warm up some canned food? Spoon feed?

If she hasn't eaten anything since Sunday, that is getting in dangerous territory for hepatic lipidosis
Has the vet syringe fed her? Has the vet offered any thoughts as to what is wrong?
I've never had a female cat so don't know what to expect from a spay, but with the meat loafing pointing to abdominal pain, really wonder what is going on. Could anesthesia cause pancreatitis? Something with the esophagus could translate to belly pain, I guess

Wow, I've never heard of a kitty having this much trouble from a spay. She is a super delicate little thing.

Iris, it's time to rally and eat some. Mum and big brothers are worrying.

I'm glad you're syringe feeding, even though I'm sure she doesn't enjoy it. Poor little Iris is clearly a sensitive kitty. :( Hopefully she'll feel better when she has some food and fluids. And poor Flora, running around without anyone to chase. ;)

I like @Woodsywife Paula's idea about trying a half dose of pain meds. It's hard to tell if she's reacting to pain from the surgery or a bad reaction to the anesthesia or to the pain meds. I'm sensitive to anesthesia and meds so I can't imagine how rough it is on a 5-lb kitty. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yes, she doesn't look groggy, more like she's tucked all in to minimize discomfort.
OF course, the pain meds do tend to depress the appy, and that combined with her discomfort, it's no wonder Iris isn't eating.
She's such a tiny lil gal, I'm inclined to agree with you that all the necessary work exhausted her.

Here's hoping she recovers quickly.
Anyway you can write that grant at home?
Hugs

My meetings ran much longer than I thought they would and I just got home. But my crummy mood improved immediately when Iris started eating!!! I am so excited. It's not a lot, but she ate on her own and she actually seemed somewhat excited about it. Strangely enough, she only ate from my hand. I tried a bowl first and then a spoon, but she kept sniffing my hand that was holding the spoon, so I put the food on there and she licked it off immediately. She probably ate about a sixth of a can of FF (about 0.5 oz) and then she proceeded to groom herself - something she hasn't done in days.

Luckily, neither one of the boys took a dive in the 5 hours I was gone... Mandarin is back up on the trampoline and Walter is hanging out on the beach.

I have fostered about 120 cats and kittens over the years and I have never had anyone have a reaction like this. But ECID certainly applies here too. I've had cats that bounce back immediately after major procedures. Cats that eat immediately after they had 10+ teeth pulled while others struggle after just one extraction. I've fostered two kittens with allergic reaction to the pre-surgical scrub they use (and that was horrible - I will never forget that). I have had one cat with an allergic reaction to a vaccine. Kittens who are under the weather after the vaccine. You never really know. So considering that she had other health issues, I am not totally surprised.

Anyway you can write that grant at home?
Thankfully, yes! In my sweatpants, on my couch, with animals all around me. That's the plan for this weekend. :)

Glad she ate a little for you, sounds like!e she is perking up.
Fwiw
My female dog was quite poorly after her spay, she's usually a bundle of nerves and energy, she couldn't even jump up on the sofa, without yelping (she is a drama queen) she was also of her food for about a week, and very subdued, broke my heart to see her like that. Eventually started licking some food from my hands. My vet told me at the time to expect her to not have much appetite after the surgery, that it was normal as she would likely feel icky for a week.

AND
:joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful:
FOR IRIS EATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yay!! So glad Iris is snacking a bit!! And that actually sounds like a great weekend: in your sweats on the couch surrounded by animals! Minus the part about having to write a grant. ;)

Good job little Iris, keep working up that appetite, fuds are good. What a relief to see her eating a bit on her own and so courteous of the rest of the pack to look out for their little sis.

What a relief she's eating! Doodles eats from my hand at every meal   Hope you have an uneventful evening and a nice relaxing weekend.:bighug::bighug:

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so relieve to read that Iris is eating.

I had the same thought as Judy - a little at a time is a good thing, as throwing up would be counterproductive and might make her afraid to eat again. Most of us have had some experience with a cat that would only eat when food was offered a certain way - bean holding the bowl, from a spook, from the bean's finger, etc. I say, whatever works!! It most often happens after they have been ill, and usually they will go back to eating the "normal" way eventually. Hope your fingers are up to the task! ;)

Mandarin, how many times must I tell you to stay off the trampoline! Down, please!

Walter, you look very handsome lounging on the beach, but you look even better with your toes in the water of the lagoon!

Sending more appy vines, and scritches to the good kitty siblings watching over baby sister. Hang in there, Flora. Your partner in crime should be back up to speed soon!

What a way to end the week with little Iris eating hope each hour she improves.
Surf safe boys and watch over your sister :cat::cat::cat:

Yay oh yay oh yay!!! SO happy Iris seems to be working her way back to a bouncing kitty bundle of joy!! Well done Iris!
Hope your snugly grant writing weekend is perfect for you!!
Big happy Iris is eating hugs!
