Crushy is looking and acting normal this morning and no ketones in his urine. Appetite is good and he's drinking again (I also mixed a lot of water in his food since yesterday)

Saw my regular vet this morning. He gave Crushy a pretty thorough physical exam and some Subcutaneous fluids. He even gave me a bag of the electrolyte solution and showed me how to do it myself at home. If he ever has an episode where he wont eat or drink for long periods of time ill probably use it. Im also going get a serum ketone monitor....I figure one more tool in my arsenal cant hurt.

So no ER visit just yet. My vet seemed to think that ER treatment for Ketones when they are just in the serum was not really warranted. Im still going to keep a close eye on him and test his urine regularly though.

So at this point we are thinking Crushy just ate something weird yesterday that upset his stomach. A random bug, grass....Ive seen him eat unidentifiable things off the floor before so there is no telling. One time he even ate a BG test strip (he thought it was a treat...thats when I learned I have to give his ear poke treats AFTER the ear poke....WELL after the ear poke) He's kind of an eat now ask questions later kind of cat.

If he continues to have episodes like yesterday's I plan on exploring the possible pancreatitis issue but Im kind of thinking this might have been an isolated incidence. I hope anyway...

That's great. It sounds like your vet was thorough and gave you good advice.

Before FD, if my cat threw up I'd just write it off as something that cats sometimes do. Now, because of secondary problems, being a big more vigilant isn't a bad thing. But if Crushy is being his happy normal CrushMeister self, then it sounds like everything is okay.

Thank goodness. Good report. Was watching for it

And Crushy sounds like he is back to normal today.

WHY CAN"T THEY TALK! I keep saying this. It would help SO much.

I was hoping he just had an upset tummy. I am glad you got the electrolytes. This is something I have not yet done and need to learn to do.
It is a great thing to have handy I hear.

You sound much more calm. Glad your vet gave you some peace of mind. Did he re-do the test or rely on the previous report. (ie: ketones in the serum) Does he concur? (i know you didn't trust some of what the other vet said)

G-d these kitties turn us all into such neurotic Jewish Mother-beans. It's in my bloodline, what is your excuse?

So glad for a new day and him feeling all better.

Now back to number watching....!!

raised by an overly perfectionist mother. This whole experience is a great opportunity to work on NOT feeling like I have to do things perfectly...cant say Im getting high marks for that quite yet though.....yet

Had a huge nap today and feel much better. Whew I was wound up tight!

What was that link to the guided meditation that you posted recently Lara? lol I forgot to bookmark it ;-)

no he didnt re do the test Betty, just looked at the test the other vet did and looked at Crushy (who seemed fine) and just suggested we keep an eye on him. He said something along the lines of serum ketones being possible in all diabetic cats and that they are not a particularly good indicator of anything but you just dont want them to be so numerous that they show up in the urine. It was my husbands idea to get the fluids...he's a smart bean.

Re: 10/25 Crushy amps 326

Glad Crushy is feeling better. Fluids always seem to perk mine up - just be careful on the amount. You can buy a whole case of them at Costco with a prescription for $26 + tax - that's as of a few days ago.

I got a Nova Max ketone tester for Tigger - the test strips are expensive, but the free meter comes with 2, I think. Also the ADW link above has a meter combo offer. I'm not sure I would get the Nova Max again, tho'. It's been linked to some unreliable 'above normal threshold' but not high readings - when they are actually normal. I don't have the link, but you might want to do a Google research between the Nova Max & the Precision meters before you make your final decision.

If Crushy's feeling better, you must be, too - and alot of weight & stress removed. Hope you get some good rest tonight.

Re: 10/25 Crushy amps 326

thanks Rhiannon!

thanks for the tips Suzanne! Was the nova Max above normal threshold readings for ketones or BG? (its one that tests both right?) also, what is a good amount of fluids to give? My vet gave us one bag and said give 100 cc as needed. What happens if you give too much? water logged kitty? ;-)
