Recap 10/1

211 AMPS
232 +2
204 +7
197 PMPS
253 +3
263 +7

Well, little girl, that increase was well deserved! Hard, though, for me since she's now .5 U more than before the CSU adventure. Yes, I know that's nothing to get all worried about, and worry won't do anything anyway. Just a hard number to draw into the syringe.

But Polly just doesn't seem "happy." No high-tail jaunts down the hallway for "snack time," more a slow almost aimless amble. She has no trouble jumping up on the bed, or bathroom vanity...or kitchen counter to eat Boomer's leftovers. But she's moving slowly with an odd gait, like a toddler wide-stanced in a bunched up diaper. And that darned tail never gets above horizontal.

Good appy, perhaps too good! Excellent box behavior. Comes for snuggles. Just something almost intangible that makes me think she's not even near 100%.

OK, enough whining! All in all, we will just keep muddling through. (and send an e-mail to her IM at CSU to see what she thinks.)

Break out the new pen tonight. Get ready Polly.

Thanks for listening. I know you all understand; this is indeed a frustrating dance at times. Guess I'd better get the drummer to pick up the pace and bring some optimistic beats my way. Odd, I'm not much of a grumbler, but these are the thoughts today. Sorry.

Marilyn and Polly (who is sprawled in the opened office window right now enjoying the smells and the breeze and everything else about being a cat)

Re: 10/2 Polly AMPS 283 (10.5U)+2=285+7=238+9=279

those tidbits of info aren't grumbling - they may be important. How she feels is part of the 5P's . . . sounds like she's not playing or purring.

Putting on my brainstorming hat.

Did they give you prednisone at CSU in case she developed a headache? They gave me some for punkin with instructions to use it if I saw a possible headache. I want to say that he felt crummy a couple of weeks later and I asked if I should use it then. The response was that the headache would've been earlier, like on the way home from CSU. That's' all from my very faulty memory, so i may not have it exactly right, but i wanted to mention it. I'm wondering if she might have something like that going on.

I have to run out but will think about this and check back in with you.

hugs, julie

Re: 10/2 Polly AMPS 283 (10.5U)+2=285+7=238+9=279

I specifically asked about short term effects and here was the answer I got from Dr. Timian/Dr Griffin:

Short-term radiation effects are seen from 1-3 weeks. Look for mental differences, behavior changes, or being off food. See vet for prednilisone if this happens. Other signs mentioned by Dr. Griffin are being tired; circling, panting and less likely is a seizure.
I got some pred on hand just in case I needed it, and didn't. Are the changes you are seeing new since CSU?

I'm sorry Polly isn't feeling 100%. I hope you can figure out what is going on with her. Good luck with the new dose.

Hi Marilyn,
I'm sorry that Polly isn't feeling herself these days and hope that it is nothing serious. Everyone is entitled to feel "off" after a major shock to the body. I hope that Polly's unusual behavior will normalize and that you will get some reassurance from the doctors at CSU.

Sending lots of healing vines to your girl,

Hugs and scritches,

Thanks for the visit to Tarragon's condo today. We like company. :-D I'm sorry Polly isn't feeling well. I hope you get answers soon. It is a very slow dance, but they are worth it. Have a great night!!

Re: 10/2 Polly AMPS 283 (10.5U)+2=285+7=238+9=279 PMPS 246

Julie, no, they didn't give me any pred. No one talked about "headache" in those terms. But that's what this seems like now that I think about it. Maybe some post radiation swelling. The rad onc talked about "early delayed" brain swelling that could be treated with pred, though. It was in my notes I took during that first meeting. Guess I wasn't connecting neurological symptoms, i.e., motion issues, with headache.

Nothing in the discharge sheets about it, though, just the radiation necrosis side effect that wouldn't show up for 2 months or more and is "serious, but very rare."

Thanks, Wendy. Today marks the third week since the end of radiation treatments. She's been a little off for a little over a week, maybe a week and a half. Within the 1-3 week time frame. And yes, the kinda depressed attitude is new within the last 10-12 days. She did beautifully during and after radiation until then. She started hiding in the mornings, moving without her usual bounce and floof. I'm curious to see what Dr. Fitzpatrick says and hope my vet will let me try some prednisolone without needing an appointment. I mean, he'll draw blood (again) and do a physical exam (again) but he can't do a CT or any other sophisticated imaging. Guess, again, I'll wait to hear from Polly's IM at CSU.

And thanks for the hand-holding Carla, Ella, Melissa. I adore LL.

Like all of us want for our kitties, I just want Polly to get back the joy. She's come so far these last six months or so. I hurt to see her feeling blue. (At least she still likes me!!! And isn't afraid anymore. That's good, very good.)

CSU sent my vet a copy of the discharge papers too, and she gave me pred "just in case" without seeing Neko, once she had those papers. Hope your vet is as open. I just looked at Neko's discharge papers again, and it talked about possible inflammation around the pituitary tumor, which manifests as neurological signs, lethargy and decreased awareness. The side effects typically develop withing 2 weeks of completion of therapy, and then resolve within another 2-3 weeks. Side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own, though they often use pain medications and anti-inflammatories to help patients through this time. They did say to contact them if I noticed any changes in Neko's mental status. The papers also talked about local side effects such as sunburn, hair loss, change of skin color and dry or flaky skin. Buprenorphine for headache might be indicated too.

Sending lots of healing and feel better vines for Polly. :YMHUG:

{{{Marilyn}}}

I know what you mean about missing the "joy" in Polly. I felt that way when Sasha was always hiding in the closet after her surgery and during radiation. There wasn't anything I could put my finger on about her behavior or say that she felt bad, but she just wasn't feeling great, either. She seems much better, now, taking a little more interest in thingw around her, looking out the window, etc. These things mean a lot for their QOL. And yours.

I hope the IM gets back to you quickly and gives you some good info and guidance, and I hope it's something as simple as adding a little pred for a while.

Sending many healing vines and some hugs. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

I agree, the people here are the nicest, kindest, most caring and helpful anywhere! :-D

Sending feel-better vines for Polly. This "dance" is sooooo very frustrating...pretty much all the time, but the alternative of not having our cats with us is just not an option that I want to think about. I shall dance the evil dance! Sending virtual hugs to you, Marilyn! You're doing a great job for that sweet girl of yours!

(((Marilyn))))

I'm so sorry to hear Polly is not 100%. I'm so glad we have Wendy and Julie with their CSU experience. Were you able to talk to the vets?

Sending many prayers and healing vines for Polly. And hugs for you :-D .

Re: 10/2 Polly AMPS 283 (10.5U)+2=285+7=238+9=279 PMPS 246+2

Many hugs for you and vines for Polly. Our vet had 5 mg prednisolone tablets and we found 2.5 mg tables at Wedgewood Pharmacy in NJ. It took 2 weeks, though, to finally get the pills. We can send you some, if you want.
Liz
