Good luck with the carb reduction Staci!

I know how difficult carb sensitivity is, my last sugar cat was extreme with his numbers, and had IBS, so he had to have more than the average diabetic cat in terms of fiber.

Hang in there, she'll get where she needs to go.:bighug:

Interesting, Deb. It was originally suggested to me that Ivy may need “higher” carbs so I increased her carbs. Now here we are, lowering her carbs back to where we began at 6%
I sure hope this helps in finding her correct balance and needs :banghead:

Does Ivy need to have sweet potato in her food? I mean, maybe that ingredient could be pared down to like 3%..? I know some dieticians say sweet potato is good for diabetes, but I think any starch like potatoes could take a longer digestion time and that could be why she doesn't vome down as much as she needs to.

Just thoughts, no real opinion, and I'm not judging at all. Like I said, Luigi had to have carbs, he was on the Royal canin dry food for 2 years of his diabetic journey. But if carbs aren't needed, maybe keep taking them down.

I really don’t know the answers. The recipes I have were formulated by a veterinary nutritionist so I am going by what she has recommended.
It’s something I can ask at some point if we continue to have an issue and can’t get her numbers down.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Good morning Staci!
It's interesting what Deb says. Bella used to eat sweet potato, I stopped it when she was diagnosed, or rather once I started coming here. I give her pumpkin once in a while but even that, not too much. I buy raw food for her, it's made locally and most of the ones I buy don't have vegetables added. Some meats have more supplements, I should try to note if that has an effect on her BG. I rotate between chicken, lamb, turkey and pork, since they don't all have the same supplements in it.
Since you make it, you could even go to 3% carbs or even less, actually? It's great that you have a nutritionist, but when I see what my vets recommend in terms of food for diabetic cats, I am not sure I would trust their recipes completely! If I listened to them, I would feed Bella canned food that has 22% carbs. And according to them, they have "a lot of patients" who went into remission just by switching to that food. I asked her last time how switching from no-carb to 22% would help Bella, and she answered that since Bella is doing so well now, maybe we don't need to change her food. Good, because I was not planning to

Hi Cecile. That’s so interesting.

This nutritionist is not my regular vet. I only use her for the recipe.

She originally created a recipe for Ivy that had white potatoes but once she had DX of Diabetes, she reformulated with sweet potatoes as a lower glycemic index.

Ivy has some ibd issues so I had to try a novel protein. We landed on lamb (she used to eat chicken and a salmon recipe).

I would have to have her reformulate the recipe again to achieve a lower carb (say 3%). But if we don’t see better results, maybe that’s in the cards for discussion.
Thanks!:)

I hope the lower carbs start to work for her soon. Maybe threaten an increase and see if she takes the bait and comes lower? The power of the miiiinnnnnd.

dropping fast all of a sudden. Second cycle we have fed only 6% food.
Maybe too much of a reduction of carbs too fast? Suddenly she’s dropping fast.
Just fed 1/2 tsp 9.25% food.
A little slower would be fine. One extreme to the other :arghh:

Oof. Slow that roll a bit there, Ivy! It's not terribly to try to feed slightly higher to slow the drop and see if you can get her coasting. It's that fine line of just enough but not so much it sends them skyrocketing.
